HAYLEY WESTENRA, Shân Cothi plus a trio of Phantoms of the Opera and a Live Aid-style line-up will headline this year’s Gwyl Gobaith Music Festival.
Organised by opera star Rhys Meirion, the three-day outdoor festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend will raise cash for Wales Air Ambulance, children’s cancer charity Clic Sargent plus cardiac research fund-raisers HeadtoHeart.
Rhys will today officially launch the festival, at Deeside College and Glyndwr University’s Northop campus.
The Ruthin-based singer said: “The Festival, which is now in its fourth successful year, has once again secured headline artists of international fame to entertain festival-goers over the three-day event.”
The event opens on Friday August 24 with New Zealand soprano Hayley Westenra in a show that will raise cash for Welsh charity HeadtoHeart, and sponsored by Gardners Accountants.
Hayley, who made her debut performance in North Wales aged 16 at the Faenol Festival in 2003, said: “I am thrilled to be returning to North Wales this summer and performing at Gwyl Gobaith.
“It’s always such a pleasure to perform here in Wales, the audience are always so welcoming and it’s such a beautiful part of the world to perform.”
On Saturday there’s an all-day multi-artist Live Aid- style event in support of Wales Air Ambulance, which needs to raise £5m every year to keep its helicopters in the air. The line-up is still being finalised by Rhys, who has promised a mix of music stars, comedians and up and coming bands from across Wales.
Sunday, the final night, sees singer and S4C presenter Shân Cothi join forces with the Three Phantoms for Clic Sargent, in a show sponsored by Airbus UK.
The trio includes former Phantoms Earl Carpenter, who has also starred in We Will Rock You, Les Misérables, Evita and Sunset Boulevard, plus Glyn Kerslake (who was also in Miss Saigon and Scrooge). The third member is the current Phantom in Cameron Mackintosh’s new tour – John Owen-Jones, who is about to release his latest CD, Unmasked.
Between them, the three have clocked up over 5,000 performances in the title role of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s musical. They will perform songs from the show, plus tunes from Les Misérables, Jekyll & Hyde, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, and The Secret Garden.
Earl Carpenter has just finished performing the Phantom in the West End, and will share the lead in a new tour with John Owen Jones. He said: “This concert has become a bit of an incredible overnight success for us and the audiences have been so supportive, but it is so much fun for us and I think that is what people enjoy the most. The camaraderie we all have on stage has turned this event into something very entertaining!”
The festival has an early-bird 10% discount on tickets booked by June 15, plus a 20% discount for workers at Flintshire Council, Airbus UK, North wales emergency services, and the three charities.
