That's why Hayley was concerned about getting home. Enough to make her subject herself to those horrible body scanners. The sooner they disapear, the better, although I understand the need for security.

I agree on the ground of privacy/ civil liberties, but it seemed like her primary concern was radiation....which really, you're probably exposed to more radiation when you're actually on the plane than walking through a scanner.

Probably depends on the type, or frequency of radiation. We are talking X rays here. These are known to be damaging in large quantities, which is why radiographers in hospitals, and even dental surgeries, hide behind shields when they Xray you. You don't want any more of it that absolutely necessary, and frequent flyers (like Hayley) could get rather too much if they have to keep being scanned in airports. And so could airport workes who often go through security several times a day.
But I think people are entitled to their privacy too.

It's a bit like a full body digital strip search without the requirement for anyone to hold a reasonable suspicion that you're hiding something or posing a threat. Some of the images that they bring up with those scans are rather intrusive in their detail. I believe that there has been quite a bit of fuss in regards to children being sent through the scanners as the images produced are considered by some to be uncomfortably nearing the edges of child pornography. There's some interesting info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_body_scannerI can really understand why some are concerned about the threat to privacy. Personally, I've never encountered one. The only place I've ever been is New Zealand, which seems a lot more relaxed. Goodness knows that when I was on holidays my backpack zipper broke and I had to pin it together with about 10 huge safety pins and I got on two flights in NZ with it as my carry on luggage and no one said a word. Admittedly, I was also carrying a 1 metre high stuffed penguin toy from Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World and I think that might have distracted everybody!! Anyway, wouldn't it be fun for Hayley to perform at Dan Carter's wedding! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif I hope these rumours are true, as I'm sure Hayley would enjoy the experience! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Cheers, Jillian

If it were me, I would've chosen a different airport! Is London really that far from Manchester? That's great if she gets to sing for the wedding... when I first saw the report on Hayley Online, I didn't know what wedding they were talking about. I just saw "the wedding", and thought, wait, what, already!? LOL I mean not that it would be too soon, just short notice, that's all. I wonder if there's any chance we'll see any pictures, or even know what song she sings, if the family is upset about the media. I don't suppose she'd dare show up in the gorgeous dress she wore at the RVP. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifHmm, how about the Milan dress?

I've read that there might be a magazine deal with the wedding, so it is very likely that photos will be published if that's the case . The magazines always like to get famous faces in the pages, so if Hayley is performing there, I would be very confident that a photo will be taken. It sort of makes sense that Hayley will be singing at the wedding. It explains why she's leap frogging her way from NZ to the UK to NZ to Taiwan - rather than maybe just going straight to Taiwan from London and giving herself some more rest. Ha ha ha ha ha ha That might be upstaging the bride slightly, hey! :rollin I put my bets on the blue Amanda Wakeley dress... Cheers, Jillian

Or maybe a new one we've never seen before? There's always a chance of that!

I hope all the fuss made about Hayley's tweets by the NZ press doesn't scare her off tweeting. :/
Then again, I guess it shows Hayley's star power in New Zealand.

That does nothing to put my mind at rest! They actually don't know what health effects these things have, yet are deploying them all over the place anyway! That's quite apart from the human rights issue. I could be very tempted to protest by walking through airport security naked. That way they won't need to use the scanner! But if I did that, I'd probably get arrested. Martin D

Hello Richard and all. It is a pity The Press could not have made more of some facts but I suppose it gave her good exposure and to have expanded the article would have meant going "off topic"! It does mention "Westenra tweeted to her 10,115 Twitter followers yesterday: ". Who else has 10,000+ following them? Only star names I'll bet. Then the reason she was using Manchester was because she had just left the Royal Variety Show, which ultimately is expected to gain a 150 million TV audience. Pity they couldn't have have used a photograph of 'That' dress from that evening! Nonetheless, this is the sort of "general" publicity she needs and it shows the NZ press is now following her, presumably on both Twitter and Facebook. They also took the trouble to interview experts and look into the debate. In my view that now places her firmly in the spotlight of general press attention and following. Provided they don't harass her by invading her privacy that can only be to the overall good. It says the NZ press see her as generally newsworthy as a person, not just as a singer. There can be no doubt this is all due to the Sell controversy which is now working to her favour. Someone commented here that they were disappointed she showed Sell had upset her. I was inclined partially to that view BUT it is always a difficult decision whether to let it flow over you or whether to riposte. This time she got it right. Without that riposte nothing would have happened. She riposted and all hell broke out seemingly majorly in her favour with the added publicity exposure and possibly serious long-term attention. I've just been told that at Manchester Airport the PUBLIC can see the images on the bodt scanners. Now that really is beyond the pale.
I wonder what those muslim ladies who like to cover themselves from head to toe for reasons of modesty think of that!

I've stayed out of this debate until now as I have no strong feelings about it one way or the other. However, I have studied the privacy aspect (which was not Hayley's expressed concern) and Manchester Airport state the following: If what you have been told is correct Martin D, there's been a serious breach of the regulations, but it hasn't made the UK press so far I think, it may be scaremongering by someone with an axe to grind? Off topic anyway for this thread as the linked article doesn't mention them. Feel free to start a new thread anyone who wants to continue to talk about airport body scanners (you could quote stuff from this thread into a new one for continuity) otherwise, back to Hayley's wedding gig! If true, it should be a "nice little earner" for Hayley. Incidentally, I've never heard of the two people who are getting married (though I've heard of the All Blacks!). Dave

Hi Dave,
Move this where you will, I agree it is off topic. My information came from somebody who knows the airport well and uses it often. He lives very close to it. I don't think he has an axe to grind, although he might know people who do.
The answer is simple - avoid Manchester Airport. I expect Hayley will in future, especially as she would probably have got home sooner if she had been driven down to Heathrow.
I mentioned the wedding tonight to a friend and Rugby fan, and he knew straight away who it was that was getting married when I mentioned it was an All Blacks player, and correctly guessed his name.
