Thanks Dave! Although I didn't demand for a rephrasal XD , And yeah this tonight is like so many times better than the old one XD....and she hits some of the highest notes she hasn't hit in live performances these days I think.

Jillian, thanks for the photos of Hayley & Rolando with Princess Anne. They didn't show it on ITV because they were running late.

I thought the WSS story album was released in 2007, which would make it over 4 years ago now. Yes, I was very pleased with Hayley's high notes. Another reason I was so concerned about being able to hear Hayley!

Yes, Libby, you are right. She hasn't forgotten though. I think for Hayley,, a song is for life! I twas good to hear it again, and Ronaldo beats the stuffing out of Vittorio Grigolo.

... Yes, I was very pleased with Hayley's high notes. Another reason I was so concerned about being able to hear Hayley! I think we can all agree that while Hayley and Rolando were an inspired pairing, more care should have been taken to ensure that his well-trained operatic voice didn't overwhelm her more delicate crossover voice. In the future, whenever Hayley duets with an actual opera singer someone should direct the sound levels accordingly so we don't have a repeat of this unfortunate volume mismatch. It doesn't help Hayley's career to be drowned out at moments like that.

It must be a matter of different tastes, because I never thought at any point that Hayley was being drowned out at all. Sure, Rolando has a lot more power, but Hayley's voice by nature of it's lighter and more delicate tone sat above Rolando's voice and was easy to hear, as I far as my viewing went. I really thought that Rolando bought out the best in Hayley's voice and gave her confidence to really go for that high note in a way that she normally doesn't do in solo performances. I thought the entire RVP was fantastic.

I agree with Jillian. I was actually pretty stunned at reading comments about Hayley being drowned out or overwhelmed. I thought they were more or less even, overall.

Me too, I thought that given his operatic voice, it was balanced reasonably well, I had no difficulty hearing Hayley clearly at any point.
The only improvement that could have been made for me is on Hayley's final note, I am not a fan of the "up an octave big finish for the sake of it", whoever does it. I think it would have sounded slightly better if Hayley had stayed in her "sweet spot" range for that final note and not gone up an octave, while Rolando did. Would have blended slightly better, I think.
Thoroughly enjoyable performance though, by both of them, and one that I am sure I will come back to again and again as time goes by (the entire three song Movies segment, which I still see as a whole).
Cheers, Dave

There was one part where Hayley's voice was completely blocked out. I can't believe some of you weren't bothered by that. I'm sorry, but I can't stand to miss a second of Hayley's singing. I'm not saying I think Rolando doesn't sound good, or anything, he's just too loud with Hayley. And as a rule, I don't care for operatic voices, so that's the other thing. As Steve pointed out, it would've been a little better if the sound people had tried to balance them out a little... meaning turn Rolando's mike down a little. :rollin

Yeah, basically I was and am very happy that this performance happened because of Rolando's name, but didn't really think their voice blended at all and the volume was perfect at some places, like in the last when they say Good "Night" U hear Hayley's voice stand out stand. But before that the whole bit where they sing, "Tonight I have a feeling, a miracle would....."That is where if one didn't see Hayley singing, it's hard to guess it was a duet. His harsh operatic voice compared to Hayley's pure sweet voice didn't compliment each other. It's a shame because both of them were doing their best and that's the best that could be done in an operatic way, so both of them were Amazing nevertheless. It was funny when I was moving thru the slider through different points of Rolando's singing, every bit is as loud as the other, and everything was like yelled XD...(which is how it should be though lol), and I was like sending this performance to lotsa people, they were like, "Wow Hayley's such a good singer", I wait for a minute, and ask them, how's it? They're like oh, I closed it the moment the guy started singing.....XD
And also I don't think Rolando did anything to Hayley's singing, I don't think he gave any confidence or brought the best out of her or anything. Hayley hits the high notes if the song really needs it, she did it on "Friday is music night", and also "Pie Jesu"....Though this is the first time I'm seeing Hayley's face strained when she hit the high note, it was almost like she was struggling to sustain it, if you look closely, her lip slightly twitches, whereas years back I used to think how effortlessly she hits even higher notes....Lol I think we should all wait for the Malena performance.....XD (She has to perform that live! D:)

Yes, Rolando was indeed at full volume but that's how he normally sings! Duets aren't a singing competition and if one singer is louder than the other then so be it. Try tellng the likes of Andrea Bocelli to turn it down!! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifMartin

Hi Martin and averyone,
Yes, but I think always singing at full volume is part of the issue here. If someone sings like that and sound engineers turn down the volume too much, it may not sound right or look right. Great tenor that Rolando is, he can improve his performance of songs from the musicals and with non-opera singers by learning to tone it down a bit himself (i.e. not relying on the sound engineers) and this would help to create an even better performance, I think. I suspect that Hayley had to meet him more than half way on this occasion, which isn't necessarily the best way to create a great duet performance.
As I said earlier, I did still enjoy the whole sequence thoroughly and the strength of his voice didn't bother me but clearly, it did bother some of us, whose enjoyment would be improved if Rolando could modify his technique a little for such songs and duets.
Cheers, Dave

That is the operatic technique though isn't it? You don't have a mike, so you project your voice as powerfully as you can - all the time. Singing with a mike, as Hayley usually does allows for more subtlety, and I suspects that is why she prefers to have a mike even though we know she had enough power to do without one if necessary.
I suspect Rolando doesn't know how to moderate his voice - and for him to try to do so would mean learning new techniques and breaking new ground. So Hayley had to accommodeate that, and so use a lot of power herself.

Well Rolando often sings with a microphone on TV and in the studio these days, wasn't singing opera last week, and so ought really to refine his technique a bit as needed for such occasions, and I'm sure he could if he wanted to. Dame Malvina did it very well when she sang with Hayley a few years ago, both of them un-miked. It's only a minor issue for me, though; I'm mainly playing devil's advocate as I love Rolando Villazon the opera singer.
