Wow! Thank you for all the photos- the screencaps etc, and the videos- although I haven't been able to watch them yet. Surprisingly I managed to finish all my university work yesterday before the royal variety show was on...but I forgot all about it- I've no idea how that happened- it's been on my mind for the past few weeks but thankfully I should be able to catch up and watch the videos over the next few days- I've got a lot of next-term preparation to do before I break-up for Christmas tomorrow so...will have to wait a bit longer to watch them...The screencaps look brilliant-looks like another wonderful Hayley performance...and Rolando certainly looks passionate too haha best wishes Sing

Hi Jillian, I have for several years considered Rolando to be one of the finest tenors of our age, probably the best of all within his operatic comfort zone. But as some have already said, he's not very good at toning it down a bit, when singing from the musicals! Poor Hayley must have been deafened! But Hayley must have been honoured to be invited to sing with someone of his stature, it's a real feather in her cap and it will no doubt be mentioned many times in the future, as one of her accomplishments. I have two Rolando videos, one in the Popstars to Opera thread here: hwi.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Othermusic&thread=5209&page=5#111965 which is the Neopolitan love song L'Alba, sung operatically and really powerfully - and his performance from Tales of Hoffman at the Classical Brits in 2010. If you'd like me to extract and upload that one, let me know. He's quite prominent on Youtube too, of course. Feel free to start a Rolando thread in Other Music if you like, if there isn't already one there. Cheers, Dave PS: Clicky reminder for the Royal Variety video: www.youtube.com/hwivid#p/u/0/g8-6S5EfUlU

Thanks Dave for toiling with the video upload well into the night on our behalf - have only just managed to watch it. Fabulous performance and what perfect timing - one could clearly see at the end of "Whispers" that Hayley was off across the stage at a fair rate of knots - almost certainly to get into position at the back of the stage before the balcony truck was wheeled on. There was no room for error that's for sure!
Thanks also to Jillian and everyone for screen captures - a brilliant effort and much appreciated.
Best wishes Grant

. Hayley and Rolando originally performed before the interval but were promoted for the TV broadcast to the top-of-the-bill segment in the final half hour (just after 9:30 pm, this was truly prime time TV). This is why there are no signs of significant problems in their segment: the problems and re-takes started after the interval. In fact the duet as broadcast was compiled from two takes. There is a very obvious continuity error with Hayley's dress.

Two come to mind: Rolando to Hayley: "Aaaaargh - You are stepping on my right foot"!! or, Rolando to Hayley: "My tonsils are bigger than yours"!! Hayley to Rolando. Oh gaaawd, couldn't you tone it down a bit?! Peter S.

Take your time Dave. You have a very good point on many thinking the actress was Hayley who know her less well than we do and it was clearly intended from the dramatic point of view that this should be so. One therefore ponders, especially with the caption you hihglighted, why on earth wasn't Hayley doing it? Peter S. Hi Postscript! I think they didn't use Hayley because it would have taken too long to get her out of the costume and into her ball gown... as well as redo her hair! It was probably just a timing issue. Cheers, Jillian Yes, she would have had to get changed very quickly. And had more to rehearse too, given her short stay in the UK. And she isn't used to acting either, so it would have been harder for her than a porofessional actress. Martin D

Dave Have you spotted it yet? In the centre section, around 6.33 in the video, Hayley is wearing a camisole which shows in the front of her dress. It isn't there in the earlier and later parts of the duet. In Jillian's pictures in post #142, the camisole is clearly visible in the second screen capture but is not visible in any of the others.

Nope, didn't spot it after two more viewings and I've decided not to check any further, or specifically where you said but I take your word for it. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss! Cheers, Dave

Thanks for the video Dave. A lot of effort I know, but the result is well worth it. As I have said elsewhere, these vids will be seen by far more people than saw the actual performance live, although you might be pushed to beat the claimed 150 million TV audience!
As for the performance - stunning. Yes, Rolano is a bit overpowering - he is a proper opera singer unlike Hayley. And I've admired him as a singer for a while, so it was good to finally see him duetting with our Hayley.
He was involved in "Pop Star to Opera Star" where he has perfromed several times. Can't remember whether he ever did a duet with Katherine Jenkins, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Actually I thought Hayley held her own very well with Rolando's powerful voice - the whole performance was wonderful from both of them I thought.

Tonight was really good, especially at the beginning, I thought. But half the time Rolando looked like he was going to take a bite out of her, the way he kept moving his head. Thanks for the laugh Libby. Who could blame him, she looks good enough to eat LOL, you're welcome. That one screen cap demonstrates my point perfectly. It was really quite alarming to watch, on my part. I certainly don't think he was miming, but I think I can see where those people who said that are coming from. The over-dramatic way he moved around, could almost look as if he was over-doing it to "prove" that he really was singing. But of course I know he was. I kind of wish they had tried to balance them out a little so Hayley didn't have to try so hard not to be drowned out. Yeah, Rolando's not for me. As I've probably said before, I don't really go for opera so much. I started liking certain artists in the CC genre because of their voices, not because of the genre itself. And the ones I like aren't really opera singers, with the exception of Andrea Bocelli. I heard Bryn Terfel on Bocelli's Central Park special recently, and I halfway like him. He has an excellent voice, but after a while it gets to be a bit much. Rolando's I can only handle for maybe a minute, especially when I really just want to hear Hayley. As for the "dash", I'm sure it wasn't exactly easy to do, but when Dave described it as "astonishing" I was imagining her actually running a little bit, as best as one can in those shoes and that dress. I'm glad she didn't really, that might have been dangerous.

Hi Libby,
Rolando is always like that - very dramatic - I think that is expected in opera. He is a bit of a clown too. Did you see the way he walked off stage at the end of "smile" - looked like a cross between "The Ministry of Silly Walks" and Max Wall.
I know you are not keen Libby, but I think he has one of the finest voices around. Certainly a cut above most of Hayley's duet partners.
I expect to see a nice round number when I post this.

I'm very glad Hayley had the opportunity of singing with him, since he is so well-known, but since I wasn't completely crazy about it, I was worried how well it would do, but I guess other people's ears are more tolerant of harsh tenor voices. I don't want anyone to think that I don't think he has a good voice. As I said, he's certainly a very powerful opera singer. I'm not questioning that. I just don't enjoy the harsh tone of a lot of tenors. It isn't pleasant to me. The only tenor I can really tolerate is Andrea, who also has a gentler tone, too, and not nearly as loud. And he doesn't terrify me when I watch him sing.
