Hi Ross Many thanks once again for another fabulous report and photos! That card with HWI and others' kind words and wishes was excellent! In the one photo of Jillian's friend Nadia, one can see Gerald, Isaac and Sophie chatting to a well-wishing fan! That write-up of in The Press by "reviewer" David Sell is not in any singer's best interest. If he is against Hayley then he must be against the people of Christchurch. Some of the comments are also cruel to Hayley. I've tried to post a comment on that site but it said I've already done so??? Mr Sell, your sell-by date says 1981...get back to it. Here's his photo for your dart-board... www.music.canterbury.ac.nz/people/sell.shtml Thank you Ross...your reports are way better than that reviewer's stitched-together rag. Well that at least explains why the man's a weirdo, he's an academic. Those who can do those who can't teach--and I do know! I've been a part-time lecturer myself based on practical experience and a couple of relatives are professors of music (The Royal College of Music, London being one of the institutions) as a result of being superb instrumentalists first! What instrument does David Sell play, apart from blowing his own trumpet? Peter S.

Hi everyone!! Clearly, the bug that is up Mr Sell's rear must have grabbed the stick that was up there and is beating him with it. Hi Jillian, Funny that you should say that - I posted comments on the so-called review which included: "perhaps someone from The Press would extract his head from where the sun don't shine..." but that bit was quietly removed by the moderator. I respect a short subsequent and fair comment by someone who defends Sell's right to criticize but points out that it is also a reviewer's duty to report - in this case, a very positive audience reaction. By ignoring that important information, he has lost any vestiges of credibility that remained after his previous hatchet jobs on Hayley. Turning to happier matters, many thanks everyone for your brilliant reports and photos of this concert - and I too am looking forward to seeing the videos later on! By the way, Peter, I too had never heard of a dress being described as "nude" rather than a particular colour and shade - you learn something every day! Cheers, Dave

Sell has reviewed some of Hayley's concerts before. He's obviously not a fan of Hayley's, so why didn't they send someone else to review her show? He probably knew what he would write before he arrived.
Hayley is well known in New Zealand, and probably better known now because of the recent Rugby World Cup. Seems to me that Sell is trying to be controversial, and make a name for himself off the back of Christchurch's most famous citizen.
Unfortunately alot of people may look at this review, and could be put off attending one of Hayley's concert or buying her CDs.
Which is why I never look at reviews for albums, films etc. I make up my own mind. I hope other people do that too, instead of listening to this eejit.

Thanks for pointing it out! I was gonna mention it too! It's not very nice to call it a 'nude' colored dress like every single time....and even the shoes were quoted 'nude' by someone...., I'd simply say gold XD
And that Sell idiot...Gawd I hate that guy, why does he have to be such a jerk...for some reason I'd be happy if he's fired XD I love what you said there grant! well said....but he's old right, he can't be bothering hayley for long....

He's publicised the paper he wrote in. There is ONLY publicity! They won't complain. 'though we might ask who is using who to whose purposes? Peter S.

The uproar about Mr Sell's review has even made it to TV One's Breakfast Show where the Christchurch reporter commented about Hayley responding to his review.
Apparently Wellington's Dominion Post on Monday had a great review, I will go to a library at some stage to hunt it down.

The uproar about Mr Sell's review has even made it to TV One's Breakfast Show where the Christchurch reporter commented about Hayley responding to his review. Yes, I was quite disappointed in a way that Hayley has let that cretin know that he has got to her... But then, enough is enough. Why do they send someone who has a history of writing stuff like that to a Hayley concert. To generate controversy of course, which will hopefully for them, sell more papers. It is what is called "gutter press". They don't care about Hayley, or what she does for Christchurch and New Zealand. If you can't say something good about someone, say nothing. Not give a very selective report that ignores everything good that Hayley does, and the many people there who loved her and wanted more. It makes me furious. Three encores and a standing ovation for the same show in Auckland! Doesn't sound like a bored audience who thought her performance was bland or boring to me. If it had been as bad as he claims, why didn't they walk out at half time, or throw fruit or something. If I lived in Christchurch, I would resolve never to buy that paper again as long as that guy is working for them. If enough people did that.... Martin D

Regarding your last paragraph I do read them and may be influenced if they are favourable but am not necessarily averse to going if it is bad, if only to learn if the critic knew what he was doing! As regards your first paragraph anyone with just basic common sense knows the writer to be an utter fool. As has already been stated, there is no report of audience response, which obviously means the audience didn't agree with him and he has reported nothing, merely delivered a personal tirade without rhyme or reason. I've posted the following, let's see what they publish.
My compliments to Grant and Martindn whose earlier responses on their web site I regard as excellent.
“The critic's job is to offer their view of their experience. You don't have to agree with it. But you do have to respect his or her entitlement to have that opinion.”
No, a professional critic is to report, he/she is there in a professional capacity (hence the fee) and not deliver subjective opinions. Objective balance was specifically missing. The mere mention of the standing ovation and three encores would have simply countered everything else that was written, which is solely why it was not reported.
“It's not her ability to sell albums that David Sell was reviewing, but the time she was performing at the Sound Barn known as the CBS Canterbury Arena on Sunday. Thoughtfully worded criticism is a gift to a musician.”
Unfortunately, David Sell did not deliver any thoughtfully worded criticism.
“David Sell's review of Hayley's Paradiso concert was constructive, thoughtful and not in any way a personal attack on Hayley.”
A wilfull misinterpretation of the reality of his writing which totally lacked balance of what happened, with the exception of the amplification on which I cannot comment.
“Having been in his position many times I do think he was brave to write what he truly thought.”
Codswallop, there is nothing brave in doing the job, if the job is done competently, of which David Sell clearly has no understanding.
Peter S.
And it seems they did publish it!
