Hi everyone, We can now discuss in this thread Hayley's Concert at Christchurch - CBS Arena on 20 November 2011. This is part of the Hayley's NZ Paradiso tour, as published by Stuff.co.nz and several other major NZ media sites today. Please discuss anything about the tour as a whole in the main thread entitled NZ Tour 2011 - General thread, thanks! Dave

Hi everyone, In Christchurch at the moment, looking forward to the concert tonight. I've seen a lot of posters around town for the concert. I'm sure that it will be something special. Christchurch is a very beautiful city. It reminds me a lot of my hometown, Toowoomba, except about 3 times larger (Toowoomba is about 80 thousand and I believe Christchurch is about 300 thousand?? A local help me out here?) Hagley Park Botanical Gardens is a definite must see for all visitors. It is something straight out of the novel, Secret Garden. Easily one of the most beautiful public gardens I have ever seen. It is very large - you could easily spend a day wandering around there. The rose garden is absolutely beautiful. When I get back to Australia, I will share some of my photos. The city has nice wide streets, most of them framed with trees - so it's a nice change from the bustle and concrete of Auckland. However, it's also very sad to see such a beautiful city in a bad way. To be honest, I didn't realise that the city was still suffering so much. It's not nice to see the fences of the red zone stretching around a lot of the cbd (even though I think I heard the red zone had been reduced in size??), the broken churches and the damaged homes. A lot of the homes have tarps and wooden bracing around them to stabilise them. It's sad when it's people's homes and also their work too - I imagine with a lot of the cbd shut down and businesses hanging in the balance, people have lost their jobs and then you need money to fix your house - which you can't have without a job. I can understand what it is like to suddenly have your job and home thrown into chaos - after the flooding in Brisbane which flooded my sister and I's homes. However, dealing with water damage is an entirely different caper from dealing with structual damage. You can DIY your kitchen, walls and cupboards - but you can't do that for structual problems with your walls and foundations - which I imagine would require a good deal of skilled labour and experts - which wouldn't come cheap at all (even if it is possible to fix). I'm very interested to find out what the NZ government has as their general plan for rebuilding Christchurch - and also the real story about how everything is going. All that said, as far as I can see, Christchurch is still definitely business as usual and the backpacker/hostel where I am staying at the moment (going to another one this arvo just to mix things up i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif) is completely booked out with tourists and visitors. So anyone who might be reading this and thinking of visiting Christchurch for a holiday has nothing to worry about. Hanmer Springs is also a short drive North from Christchurch. We drove up there yesterday and went white water rafting! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif How much fun!!! They even let you jump off the rocks into the rapids! (I think my mother would have killed me if she saw me doing that! ) Going horse riding this morning. I've never been on a horse, so I hope that they give me the really lazy and placid one! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Cheers, Jillian

Hello Jillian Sounds like you're having fun and making the most of your time in New Zealand. Enjoy your horse ride - I still remember my first one, even though it was 45 years ago! - Might tell you about it later - not now though Looking forward to hearing all about the concert. Best wishes Grant

Hi Grant!
I hope your horse ride story doesn't involve an unhappy ending!? :rollin Unfortunately, they don't have a brake and a steering wheel like a car!
Cheers, Jillian

Thanks for that Jillian. Christchurch is still often in my prayers, and sometimes even in the prayers I lead at Christ Church here in Leicester. That sort of devastation takes time to recover from. I can remember still seeing the bombed out sites in London more than 10 years after the end of WW2, and I suspect thing were even more devastating than that in Christchurch. It will take time to heal, and as we know Christchurch's own Hayley is part of the healing, in the spiritual sense anyway. She has that power, and uses it well. We don't know about the individual stories, and we can only guess at the hardship that has been endured. But we love Hayley for her concern, and I think that the people of Christchurch will share that love too. That is why this concert will be special - more special I think than any of the others on this tour. Special for all who are there, and special for Hayley. Give her the love that she deserves.
Make this the greatest Hayley concert ever. I wish I could be there.

Hi Jillian I'm glad to know you've safely arrived in Chch and that you're in the concert as I write. Yes, it's very sad to see Chch in such a state, and I can imagine tonight's concert is going to be an emotional one. Can't wait for your report. Dori
