Whoa, "shrill and harsh"? That's the kind of reaction I expected for her recent "My heart will go on" Performance, but this song, this performance really moved me "WITHOUT" even knowing the story before she sang. Her posture, her look in the eyes, everything was quite perfect "for me". Could have been sung a little more gently, but no I loved this as it is, those flawless high notes, and she started, sustained and ended every note pretty perfectly. Like Dave said, this performance was FILLED with emotion! ANd it's also the mixing....this song should have had a more reverberated acoustics...... Try this one, This mix is more pleasing for me, but Hayley's singing to me was one of her bests....I dunno why it's always a generalized comment that Hayley's performances in America are not good, maybe because it's not received well that automatically people think it's not good? I dunno... www.mediafire.com/?1i5o3parv42rguc

Perhaps it was a mistake to include that Pie Jesu on my 2011 Hayley Yearbook CD. Playing that in the car takes it out of context - and it just doesn't work on that CD, squeezed between "Who Painted the Moon Black" and "Songbird".

If you look closely at Hayley's eyes in the pictures enlarged you can see how watery they are. You can't fake that!

Hey Guys, this must have been the most difficult performance ever for Hayley so let's put it into context. Emotion was at its peak by the time Hayley stood up and for a 23yr old I applaud the performance.
No one more than Hayley would have known at the time that it may not have reached her normal high standards but it is this vulnerability and innocence that makes Hayley so special.

Martin Exactly! It was Hayley's decision to go to the Memorial with Michelle - she could have distanced herself from "the emotion" of the event, but she chose not to. Hayley is a very astute young woman and she would have realised I'm sure, that her audience that day would not be looking for a concert performance, rather a performance that would show that she understood and felt what they were feeling. We should all applaud her for that, not criticise. Best wishes Grant

...it's also the mixing....this song should have had a more reverberated acoustics...... Hi Simba, Purely on the technical side of things, you are right about the audio mix for TV, it didn't suit Hayley's voice. Reverb is very much a matter of personal preference and I feel that it's often overdone on TV but not on this occasion, so in the version I uploaded last year, I did add a little but I tend to be conservative with these things and to keep them as close to the broadcast as possible. I'm always willing to listen to comments about this and if there is a consensus that a video sounds dry, it's easy for me to add reverb. However... I've had a close look at my HD/DD5.1 copy of the entire concert, which I did not possess when I first uploaded our version of the video, and there are definitely some unwanted vocal resonances in the 3 KHz area, caused somewhere in the sound system or broadcast chain, I am sure. I can lessen them with a notch filter and when I do, it does improve things a little so I'm thinking of creating an Anniversary Edition in HD, with improved sound. It's important not to make Hayley sound unlike Hayley, of course, so I would need to be careful here. Maybe I will do that, though. Cheers, Dave

While reverb is personal preference, it also depends majorly on the song, airy fairy songs like this should half some amount of the ethereal reverb that everyone is used to. And usually in Hayley's recordings, there's a LOT of reverb, so it's like a generic thing for her.
But yeah usually when we mix vocals, they say too much reverb can spoil things....but this one recording was way to dry to evoke any ethereal feel. The bg music was also very low in volume.
And that Anniversary Edition sounds great! Do it XD

Best wishes Grant I think the reason she wanted to go to the memorial may have to do with the fact that she'd seen her own relatives' names on a memorial wall in Belgium, so it's sort of something she could relate to, I suppose. BTW, Martin, she was actually 24 at the time, having already had her birthday by then!

That's exactly right, and I thought I'd quote this as I've just finished watching Adele at the Royal Albert Hall (the TV recording). She is another singer who, like Hayley, remains true to herself and who is not afraid to show real emotion when she feels it. At the end of "Someone Like You", she was in tears. Real tears. But as with Hayley, you can't really bottle it, or fake it. Cheers, Dave

hat's true Dave. We are talking about real people here. Those who are who they are, not ones who project a false image. That has always been the case with Hayley, her motto is to be herself, and she always is. EVen if that sometimes might be misunderstood, she does not detach herself from her performances like some artists. Even if some people feel that she is not what they expect a classical singer to be. That is something I love about her.

Hi Martin D and everyone, I echo your sentiments! Meanwhile, following an earlier exchange (possibly between Simba and myself) I decided to see what I could do to improve the audio on Pie Jesu, and I've now had a go at it prior to making a new "anniversary" HD video of it, which will not have been seen before (though there is an HD version on YT, taken from a different TV station). I have uploaded the original audio as on our Youtube version, and the most extreme of the new versions I have made. I don't usually like processing audio this much, so it's experimental, and I would appreciate some comments please. Original Pie Jesu audio (256kbps .mp3 file, 6MB) Modified Pie Jesu audio (256kbps .mp3 file, 6MB) Both are set to the same peak volume but the new version sounds slightly quieter. I have an in-between version too, which I will post later for comparison, if the feeling is that this one is excessively processed. I'll use whichever version members prefer (including the original if necessary) on the new video Please let me know, thanks. Dave

Hey Dave! I think the new one sounds wonderful. Even so, I think I would like to hear the in-between version. The modified one sounds just a tad too quiet. Very nice work though. Absolutely wonderful! -Taylor i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif
