Great review Peter.
It is all there, perhaps the first song summarises it, Whispers in a dream, a song about the victory of love over fear and darkness, and over the violence of the storm. Hayley's lyric is inspired, and Hayley has said that when she wrote it, it just flowed out of her. I have had similar experiences with things that I have written, and when that happens, somehow what you write is just "right". I could argue that words like that come from beyond the self, perhaps from heaven. And with Hayleys music, it doesn't stretch the imagination too much to believe that heaven is its source.
I actually once had a dream very like that. And the angel did sing, and that angel was Hayley.
And Peter, I think you have forgotten La Califfa, with another wonderful lyric from Hayley about the eternal nature of love.
This is an album that, despite being pretty much completely masterminded by Ennio, is absolutely right for Hayley too. I agree that there is no other singer on the planet who could be right for it. Whether that is because of Ennio's genius in arranging the music to suit Hayley, or Hayley's brilliance in interpreting it her way, I don't know; I suspect a bit of both. But is just fits and just IS.
I was thrilled the first time I heard it back in April. Nowadays, it seems like an old friend, and I'm still thrilled by it. I suspect I always will be.
And Amalia - what can I say. I've been to Portugal, I have seen the sun glinting on the waves, felt the sadness of the sea, and Hayley has absolutely captured it, bottled it and given it back to us in that song. That is quite apart from the amazing virtuosity of her performance, and the technical difficulty, the thing that does it for me is that she has the emotion of fado spot on. I love it.
This album is an absolute classic, one of the great albums of all time. And it is up to us to do our best to make sure that this time, the world hears it. We are so used to Hayley's best work not being known about, just disappearing down a black hole never to be heard again. This is far too good for that, and I'm pleased to see that money s being spent and effort made to promote it.
Acutally, it is interesting to see the effect of some of that exposure. Last Fridays TV appearance on BBC Breakfast, only five minutes or so long, had a huge effect I am sure. My own YouTube channel showed a huge spike in the statistics for that day, over 800 hits, more than double the usual, and most of it coming from the UK. No other day has been like it, ever.
Just think what she could do with the sort of exposure that even amateur X Factor contestants get. Prime time TV seems to be the answer, and as I've always believed, if people get to hear Hayley, they will love her.
