Well, what a weekend. I've finally found time to get onto HWI. Well, what can I say about it! Absolutely wonderful. Powerful, wonderfully moving, a magnificent performance, and much better sound balance than on the record, I could actually hear Hayley throughout. I thought Hayley got this exactly right. She didn't push herself forward, she doesn't at this festival, sort of takes a back seat, in a modest way as if to say "this is not about me, it is not Hayley Westenra that is important here, it is our brave servicemen and women that fell in battle. I am just here as a voice". Most singers would not do that, they would want to be the star of the show. My admiration for Hayley just grows and grows, what a truly beautiful human being she is! Last years performance wasn't about her either, if I remember, it was about Dame Vera Lynn. As for the performance, Karl Jenkins setting of the poem to music, the choir, the band, Bernard Cribbins' reading, and of course Hayley's vocals, it was all just perfect. Well done to everyone involved. I feel very proud of our Hayley. Martin D Hi MartinD, I definitely agree with you. This is certainly Hayley's most moving performance and my favourite out of every contribution she's made to past Festivals of Remembrance. The fact that Hayley also wasn't the centre of attention made the performance a very genuine act of remembrance, with the focus being on the service men and women. On a lighter note, I really do love Hayley's dress. It was appropriate for the occassion. Cheers, Jillian

Hi jillian , Dave & all. I'm so glad I listened/viewed Dave's HD copy first as I now have downloaded Itunes recording of the same & am shocked to pieces !! EMI have succeeded in making Hayley nearly disappear into the choir. How unbelievably irritating. Graeme

But I do really like the recording - it's different, but very good all the same. But it's definitley well complemented by having the live version on hand as well! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif I prefer the live version (of course). Cheers, Jillian

A late post but just wanted to add my comments that I really enjoyed the Festival of Remembrance as always. Hayley's performance was exactly what we would expect, beautiful. Most performers who, like Hayley, are genuine in their involvement with the Royal British Legion and support of the forces tend to underplay their part, that is part of their makeup. They help because they are in a position to and want to, not because they want any special recognition for it. On a different note, it was one of those rare occasions where I wasn't thrilled by the dress....sorry

Here's the HWI youtube video; I didn't see it posted here, so I'll post it now: www.youtube.com/watch?v=azBmlXhbRF0It was a very nice performance. Hayley looked and sounded beautiful, but the celebration of the fallen soldiers is what really made it special. The dress may not have been amazing, but as Peter said, it's not about the dress. Having said that, the ring she was wearing is probably the biggest I've ever seen her wear. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

I think the dress was perfect actually. It was understated, just as her performance was. She wanted to disappear into the background, and concentrate attention on what the Festival of Remembrance is really about. It is not about Hayley, as I said before, or what she is wearing, they should not matter. Hayley is quite capable of wowing us with her appearance, she is beautiful and has often worn beautiful dresses that draw attention to her, but this was not the occasion for that. It all pales into insignificance against what this festival is about, people who gave their lives, or perhaps even worse, were maimed fighting to maintain our freedom. She was the last of the singers, the star of the show if you like. Making a rare appearance on a mainstream TV channel in the UK. But she was the most understated of them all. She gave all of that to those who fell, a truly great performance. It was dedicated to them. To me, that speaks volumes about the sort of person she is.

Hi Libby, I posted the link in the middle of page 2; I also added it to the top of the first post in the thread, which is something I think I'll do each time I make a video, from now on. This will make links easier to locate. As for the ring, yes it's huge! And I didn't even notice that she was wearing one until you mentioned it! Hayley's ring I've added it to the gallery on the main site. Dave

Well, I didn't think to look at the first post. I don't know how I missed it in the other post. I guess I was distracted by the lyrics and all. This is the first day I've gotten on since Friday evening, so I'm still just catching up on everything. I just went to youtube first thing and searched for her performance. Her previous 2 performances come up first in the results, though.

Hi everyone, I actually really love that dress. Perhaps it's a television thing, where you can't really see 'sparkle and depth etc', but if someone walked into a room with a dress with a beaded lace overlay and buttons up the sleeves like that, it would catch everyone's eye. I guess it's a bit different than anything Hayley has worn before, as I don't think she's ever worn an evening dress (as in a glitzy one) with long sleeves or even 3/4 sleeves before? It's all down to personal preference, I guess. Some members have loved dresses that I haven't been so keen on and vice versa. Cheers, Jillian

Yes, I think this is the 3rd time you've said you like the dress. The longest-sleeved dress I can think of is the red one she wore to sing Abide with Me for the rugby match last year, and also on the Winter Magic tour. But this one is much fancier than that more casual dress. I like the dress, but for an evening concert dress, it didn't really impress me that much. At least it was warmer than her usual dresses.

Many thanks to Dave, for sharing this very moving portion of the Festival of Remembrance last Saturday. Hayley was absolutely splendid in her singing as was all aspects of this stirring tribute. I quite liked the dress as well i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif~ Joe

Hello Dave! I see there's a debate on YouTube whether a word in 'For The Fallen' is contemn or condemn. To my ears, Hayley definitely sings "condemn", and the Royal British Legion in Derbyshire also say "condemn" in the Exhortation as quoted on their website: britishlegion-derbyshire.org.uk/About_the_Legion.htmI hope this helps. Richard
