Hayley Westenra 'outstanding young person of the world' 12.00pm Tuesday September 5, 2006 By Jarrod Booker New Zealand singing sensation Hayley Westenra has been named one of the 10 outstanding young people in the world in the prestigious annual awards by Junior Chamber International (Jaycees). The 19-year-old from Christchurch, who has topped the UK classical music charts and also serves as a Unicef ambassador, is the first New Zealander ever to be named in the top ten. She was recognised for her cultural achievement. Hayley was selected from a pool of 150 nominees from 42 countries. Her album Pure has sold millions of copies and she has performed with the world's greatest classical performers at the world's most prestigious venues. Her achievement was announced while she was back in her hometown of Christchurch today. Hayley said although she didn't set out to win awards, it was a huge honour to be "flying the New Zealand flag". "With my singing I'm always aware that young people are looking up to me. Along the way I'm trying to make the world a better place by doing my bit." Hayley is spending nine days at home with her family before returning to London where she is based. She is recording a new album in November, but is due back in New Zealand for Christmas. www.nzherald.co.nz/section/6/story.cfm?c_id=6&ObjectID=10399804No surprise there Belinda.

And another version: Hayley Westenra selected as Outstanding Youth Tuesday, 5 September 2006, 2:44 pm Press Release: Junior Chamber International JCI NEW ZEALAND PRESS RELEASE: Junior Chamber International selects Hayley Westenra as an Outstanding Young Person of the World. The JCI (Jaycee’s) New Zealand nomination of Hayley Westenra has been selected as one of Junior Chamber International’s (JCI) Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World Program (TOYP). JCI New Zealand National President Andre Stokes says that the TOYP Program serves to formally recognize young people (aged between 18 and 40) throughout the world who excel in their chosen fields and exemplify the best attributes of the world’s young people. By recognizing these young people, JCI encourages them and others to seek excellence and to continue to serve others. Hayley won under the category of Cultural Achievement The selection process for nominees is arduous says National President Stokes. In 2006, over 150 nominations were submitted from 42 different countries. All nominations were pre-screened by judges to select thirty finalists. The final thirty nominations were then sent to the final judges. At that stage of judging, each judge worked independently of his fellow judges and the names of the judges are unknown to their fellow judges until the judging process is completed. The final honorees selected were the ten nominees who receive the highest point totals. In winning this prestigious award, Miss Westenra will be flown, courtesy of JCI, to the JCI World Congress in Seoul in November where she will be presented with her award at a formal black tie function. Past winners of the JCI TOYP awards include Actor Jackie Chan, Entrepreneur Anthony Robbins and Australian Pioneer Aviatrix, Janine Shepherd. JCI (Jaycees) is a world-wide federation of young leaders and entrepreneurs for young people aged 18-40. It has more than 250,000 members in more than 110 nations globally. Wonderful news Drew, and well-deserved by Hayley! I was posting the same articles on the Celebration board, but I've cut down the transcripts there and posted a link to this thread, where discussion can continue. Congratulations Hayley! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBest Wishes, Richard

Hi Drew.
And here was I scrolling through the latest posts and thinking i was at last going to post a news item ahead of anyone else but no, someone had already posted it.
It is a wonderful tribute. What I found most interesting was Hayley's response when interviewed. 'I don't set out to go for awards'
No, she just sets out to do a good job, the best way she can... and incidentally wins awards is the reality. That is what it should always be about.
Well done our Hayley!

When I watched the clip I sensed that Hayley may have been slightly overwhelmed by the achievement. But thats what you get when you are the best. Congratulations Hayley.

Hi everyone... and well done Hayley! When I watched the TVNZ clip it kept stopping to re-buffer and in total it took me 8 minutes to watch the 93 second clip. I find this often happens with the TVNZ broadband internet connections from the UK (though it's probably dependent on the time of day). Anyway, I decided to download the file instead... which also took 8 minutes... but for anyone who has problems watching the clip directly from TVNZ, you can now watch it and/or download it from my webspace here.Cheers, Dave
