And last but not least I would like to wish Thomas a very happy birthday today. Thomas, may this weekend bring you everything you desire, EXCEPT A GERMAN VICTORY TOMORROW AFTERNOON !!!!!
Thank you Jeff for your wishes! Well the weekend brought a lot for example a very exciting football match. Although I have to say that it wasn't a correct decision by the referee not to give the second goal to England. Everybody saw that the ball was in the goal. So off against Argentina now. If Argentina showed the same performance like they did yesterday against Mexico I wouldn't be too afraid but they can do better. They have some unfinished business with us when Germany kicked them out in 2006. So I expect they will play on a high level and it will be very difficult. So we'll see. Congratulations to Holland! HUP HOLLAND i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBrazil is the next one for the Netherlands. That will be very difficult as well for both teams. The excitement increases! Thomas

Hi Dazza I know you're dissappointed; but don't you think the players want to win as much asyou want them to.

So, when is somebody going to actually play to win the cup? It seems like it's been going on forever. Is it 2 weeks like the Olympics?

I haven't posted for a few days as I'd probably say something I'd regret ! Sunday started badly when I watched the European Grand Prix - won by a German with an Englishman second best, an omen of things to come. Yes, we should have lost 4-2 and not 4-1 but what matters was not the goal we had disallowed but the 4 perfectly good goals that Germany scored. Unfortunately soccer is not like horseracing where a stewards' enquiry can amend a result afterwards if an injustice has been done or a beaten rider raises an objection but it wouldn't have made any difference as we were simply OUTCLASSED. Stats don't lie: Germany hasn't lost in the second round of the World Cup for 72 years (I think we can forgive them 1938, other things were going on). Along with Brazil they are the most consistent team in world football. (Brazil have only lost once in 2 years, 30 games). FIFA got our seeding right, no 7 which obviously meant 6 teams were better than us. What really stuck in my throat was Capello's attitude afterwards. He was most loquacious when we beat Slovenia but when we lose he pretends he can't understand the question and needs an interpreter ! Did I hear him right ? We played well ? I missed that bit when I went to the bathroom (his players have that effect on me !) The Germans have a German manager, the Brazilians have a Brazilian manager. We have a manager with a great record in club football when he's speaking Italian to Italian players. And were the players tired ? Rooney 50 games this season. Schweinsteiger 48 games ! Rooney wasn't tired, just not fit.So what does Capello do when we need a goalscorer ? Brings on Heskey who I believe has never scored for England and leaves our most prolific recent goalscorer Peter Crouch on the bench. He's a stubborn boss who kept playing people like Gerrard out of position so no wonder gaps appeared at the back for the Germans to exploit. Of course there isn't one England manager, there are 30 million (all of whom think they can do a better job than him) and this one is glad he didn't waste his money going to South Africa ! Oh well, Andy Murray might win Wimbledon ! Must dash, a flying pig has just crashed on my roof !

Rooney 50 games this season. Schweinsteiger 48 games ! Rooney wasn't tired, just not fit. I agree with that, Rooney has been unfit ever since his initial late-season injury occurred. It's not a case of him not bothering to turn up, as many have suggested. The number of late season injuries (which impact on end of season fitness) are of course related to some extent to the amount of club football that is played during a season. Dave

It is worth briefly looking at our last International cup success back in 1966. The players were no better (or worse) than the current bunch but what made the real difference then was that the eleven played as a team and for each other. Furthermore, they demonstrated a real passion and belief that they could win, despite the odds, and which had been drilled into them by Alf Ramsey, the manager at that time.
Success in any competition is 50% ability and 50% motivation.
Amen!

Hi Larry, I do think that the players wanted to win, especially as this was a last tournament for a lot of them, but for whatever reason this just wasn't showing in their play. Maybe I expect too much with England - I have been brought up as Stoke City supporter and have had a season ticket for over 10 years, we have always had a hard working committed team and a lot of our recent success has been down to this determination despite having lesser quality players than many of our opponents. Often I have come away from a Stoke game after a defeat and while being dissapointed I have not been too down because I know that every player has given 100%, you can't ask for much more than that. I have never got that feeling with England. Although I am still dissapointed about Sunday's result I am now looking towards the future and Euro 2012 (warning - I am making plans to go, the last time I did this for 2008, we didn't qualify! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif), wether Fabio Capello stays or not we have some exciting young players coming through who should break into the squad over the next year or so, particually Adam Johnson, Jack Rodwell and Jack Wilshere. With the new squad rules in the Premier League next season we should see more emphasis on youth development and more acadamy players breaking into first teams, which can only be a good thing for England Dazza

I'm afraid it is going to take a bit longer than 2 years to sort this out. We have to start from the ground up. Which means kids in school have got be be allowed to compete. And yes, that means they will lose some times, and that will hurt. But it is all part of growing up. Shielding kids from the disappointments of the real world only make it worse for them then as inevitable they eventually have to face them. All those who excel in their fields have had their disappointments, yes even our Hayley! And the thing that matters is how you respond. Do you curl up and die, or do you come out determined to do better the next time? Telling kids that whatever they do is wonderful no matter how dire is not encouragement, it is cruelty. One day they will come face to face with reality, as the England team have just done.

Now the Octopus (from Germany) after having correctly picked Germany to beat England has picked Germany to beat Argentina. It had also correctly picked Germany to lose to Serbia earlier. Now if I could just get the Octopus to pick the World Cup winner I could make some money lol.

I think this Octopus knows more about football than any World Cup pundit I've seen Nigeria's President has suspended the nation's football team from international competition for two years, following their poor showing in the World Cup. It's probably a good thing for you England fans that Gordon Brown is no longer Prime Minister. Being a scotsman, he might've done the same to England following their poor showing

If he suspended their club wages with it, it might serve to concentrate their minds a little

I hope Paul the Octopus stays in good health throughout the rest of the World Cup. I'd hate to bet six quid on a sick squid!
