Olivia's not a Classical singer, so of course her voice isn't going to stand comparison with the likes of Hayley (As if anyone's does) or Faryl. What she has got is a very good Pop voice and especially so for a fourteen year old. Not the best fourteen year old Pop singer I've heard (That would be Miley Cyrus, three years ago) but certainly good enough to impress and with a very pleasant tone. It's a perfect voice for Pop ballads. *** One thing I did notice when I was re-watching Faryl's BGT audition today was the way the audience was completely silent throughout. Do any of the regular BGT watchers know if that has happened for any other performer/artist? Or is it just Faryl? I am rather surprised about your opinion about Miley Cyrus being the best teen pop voice (well, you said 14, but you meant it that strictly?). I mean, haven't heard too many of her songs, but the few ones I heard, she didn't impress me. She can sing, yes, but I can't find any special vocal ability even for pop. I would say I always thought her voice was more suitable for rock, where the vocal abbiility is secondary. Any of the major Disney Channel singing teen stars in my opinion is better, with Vanessa Hudgens in the lead. But, to keep at least partially on topic, I think the best teen pop voice I've ever heard was from a talent show too, the Spanish contest to choose the representant for the first Eurovision Junor festival in 2003. Her name was Blanca Liquete and here are some videos from her songs sung in the contest. Un Nuevo Amanecer (A new dawn) - The song that I think should have won that year... such a beautiful performance by such an incredible voice. Amistad (Friendship) - Her other song in that coontest, a little more upbeated, doesn't show so much her voice, but great too (not the original audio from the performance though). Sueña (Dream, Spanish version of Someday) - Here's a little bit of parallelism with Faryl (when singing with Jenkins), lol... Singing with a former Eurovision contestant, and yet, the young girl sings better than her idol. Si yo fuera tu (If I were you) - A song where all the finalists join in. That was a year with a very high average level on that contest, much better than the next (in 2004 the represntant of Spain won the Eurovision Junior contest with a truly horrible song!). I love Blanca's vocal tricks in the second part of the song. And, on Faryl's topic... Huh, that's a very interesting fact, and that only shows how stunning is her talent. Michal

Michal...
Yeah, I meant it absolutely strictly as Miley-at-14, NOT 'best teen Pop singer'. That'd be a lot harder to judge as 'teen' covers a lot of very good Pop singers. Most singers don't really start that young, though, which means 'best Pop voice at 14' is far easier to judge.
Miley actually has two singing voices, which is pretty rare And one of the reasons I rate her. The voice she uses for Hannah Montana, which is quite high, and her normal singing voice which is deeper and much more suited to Rock. Songs like See You Again have a vastly different vocal sound to the far more poppy stuff (And are vastly better, IMO. I prefer Miley the Rock chick).
I STRONGLY dispute your assertion that a good voice is more important in Pop than in Rock. If anything, it's the other way around as true Rockers always sing live whereas a lot of Pop stars get away with miming. Pop is also far more about image, where Rock is more about the music.
The best teen female Pop vocalist I've heard is probably Christina Aguilera, thinking about it, who had an unbelievable voice right from the start (And a lot of very bad songs. But listen to Reflection, the song she did for Disney's Mulan, and tell me I'm wrong...)
Back on topic, yeah, I agree entirely about Faryl. For me, she's actually been the biggest surprise and the best find out of all the BGT series'. I like Paul Potts (who is very talented and who I hope to listen to for many years) and Susan Boyle (Which is buying into the fairytale as much as the voice, I know. She can sing, but she's not THAT good). But, there's just something about Faryl's voice. With training and a lot of hard work, she MIGHT one day rival Hayley in terms of ability (Though she'll never have that ethereal sound, of course). She's the only other singer I've ever heard who might one day reach that height. Faryl has a different sound to Hayley, but the one thing they have in common is that each has an incredibly distinctive and unique voice that you could never mistake for anyone else.
No wonder Simon was so miffed at losing her to Decca. I'm sure he must know that Faryl is his best find so far.

But listen to Reflection, the song she did for Disney's Mulan, and tell me I'm wrong...) Hmm... I see, I see... Well, I've just checked that Miley's song you mentioned and it certainly raised my opinion, but not so much. I definately prefer the 12 year old Blanca, specially for pop slower songs like ballads. I certainly admire many pop singers and I would have no idea of telling my favorite or best famale pop singer, but one voice that comes to my mind there is Shakira. Her main style is not between my favorites, and many of her songs doesn't really get to me, but her voice and the way she uses it, are truly special. And my favorite of her songs would be the accoustic version of La Pared, it just shows all the beauty of her voice. Oh, and on the rock thing... Well, in terms of miming you are probably right, most rock singers don't mime. But I was rather thinking of people who actually SING and not just pretend they sing (in my opinion, it's ok to mime occasionally if you are really oblgated, but a singer who can't sing live shouldn't even be called a singer). And without the miming thing, I would still say that pop melodies, in most cases, require a wider range and more vocal skills than rock. Of course, there are exceptions on both sides, there are many very plain pop songs and there are some rockers that have very good vocal skills (of course, depending a lot on the subgenre of rock), but as an average, that's what I think. And, I will answer the Faryl part on her own thread. Michal (sorry for the offtopic)

For Miley on ballads, you want The Climb and When I Look At you. Listening to those may raise your opinion further, though, I warn you! Miley is very easy to underestimate. We'll just have to keep disagreeing on Pop vrs Rock, I think Will look for your Faryl response

There was some fantastic musical talent on TV on Saturday night and after the BBC Young Musician of the Year Semi-Final had finished, I turned over to Britain's Got Talent. From the sublime to the ridiculous !

Well Joe, I'm not sure I'd go that far but Liam reminded me a lot of Andrew Johnstone 2 years ago who I thought was actually better back then and he could only manage third place in the final. One thing is for sure, the standard of singing this year is certainly better than I can remember and it's going to be a very competitive final. I've seen 5 singers who deserve to be there including Neil (the doorman) who I thought was better than Michael Buble who followed BGT on ITV last night.

Hello Jeff!
I also enjoyed Neil's performance! I see that Louis occupied Simon's chair once again. Did you know that Simon got kno knighted? For services to charity

Last night in the first semi-final the judges refused to save Olivia Archbold in favour of a streetdancer, Tobias Mead. Can't help feeling that could be an omen for the rest of the week. Cowell said Olivia had chosen the wrong song (by Kate Winslet ?) and for once I agree with him.

Not a good song for her, I agree, but still an incredible voice. The irony is that she'll very likely go on to do far, far better than most if not all of the acts who get further in the competition.
I suspect it's a case of 'let the bidding wars begin!' She doesn't even have to take part in the finalists' grand tour, so in the long term this might well rebound hugely to her benefit. I suspect Simon has already offered her a contract, honestly.
I very much doubt it's the last we've seen of her. Not with a voice like that.
I do find myself wondering if Amanda & Piers voted her out just to annoy Simon...

I do find myself wondering if Amanda & Piers voted her out just to annoy Simon... Although I think they do things to annoy Simon in the auditions I don't think they would do it in a live programme. I was worried for Olivia's survival as soon as I saw last nights line up. I feel that Spellbound are favorites to win and that Amanda was very pro Tobias from the auditions. Ironically I thought that his performance dipped more than Olivia's. The ball clever Idea though it was looked out of control far to often and although the song was not a good choice she did a good job with it. I do think and hope you are right about the long term. Olivia should have the better career. Jim

Hi all,
I agree... Olivia did rather well considering her choice of song.
I think Tina & Chandi will win...woof! Although Tobias Mead was brilliant too.

Joe, Tina and Chandi won their semi-final last night. Well predicted ! Any ideas about the lottery ?! Neil Fullard (Sinatra-singing doorman who I thought did well) went out to a 10 year old boy band, saved by Simon Cowell who can now look forward to huge profits from phone calls from teenage girls !!
