Steve- I would love for the public to be introduced to a wider selection of opera, but I suspect this show will be nothing but "O Mio Babbino Caro"s and "Nessun Dorma"s and "Habanera"s. Statistically speaking, looking at the history of classical crossover... La Jenkins and the like don't particularly care to dip into the wealth of operatic repertoire-- they play it safe.
Larry- This American likes to think that she and her friends have excellent musical taste. And organizations like The Met and the New York Philharmonic (not to mention the Kansas City Symphony and the Wichita Grand Opera, to speak locally in my case) aren't exactly DEFUNCT!

If Camilla's Twitter is to be believed, she will feature on the show as a guest.
With this in mind, I have had a u-turn. If this show is popular, and it brings on all our classical artists as guests such as Camilla, Hayley, etc, then I am all for it.
I still think it stinks, but I'll accept the extra publicity for CC artists. It's just a shame they are labelled as opera artists.

I'd love to hear Taylor Swift try some Puccini. Well it would be at least worth a good laugh. We Americans are hopelessly mired in a horrible lack of taste musically. Larry Taylor's voice isn't powerful enough. If you could get Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood, on the other hand...

Hi Chantelle I'm sure you have excellent musical tastes; however if you would read my post again more carefully you'll see that I referred to the masses not a niche segment of the U S market. Larry

I'll reserve judgement until I see the show. I just hope they don't think translating a pop song into Italian makes it classical. It doesn't !

... I just hope they don't think translating a pop song into Italian makes it classical. It doesn't ! I agree, but I think there's no stopping the trend to make songs Italian. Like it or not, it does boost the snob appeal because Italian is the essential language of musical composition in addition to being a dominant presence in opera.

I heard a horrible screaming noise on Classic FM and it was a trailer for this programme. If you must watch it, I suggest you turn off the TV sound and listen to one of Hayley's albums instead. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifPerhaps Simon Cowell isn't so bad after all! Richard

Larry, I may be a member of a "niche segment," but as a US citizen I'm also a member of the masses! You cannot speak of The Masses as an over-riding generality because The Masses are composed of niche segments! I've done enough traveling in my short lifetime to know that what holds true as a stereotype for the midwest doesn't even apply in the east coast... and vice versa, and similarly all over the USA. Anyway. I just found this interview with Rolando Villazon and I think he gives some great insight into the "purpose" of the show. I really like his way of thinking-- and it's a good reminder that it's all just for fun! www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/opera/6975619/Rolando-Villazon-interview.html(There's also an interview clip on YouTube where you can see that Rolando is in it just for the laughs and to have a good time, while KJ might be taking things a wee bit too seriously...! www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5rpf7_Ut6k )

Hi Chantelle Thanks for the YT link which I found very interesting if not amusing, particularly Rolando's body language when KJ was speaking. As you say, he is taking it with tongue in cheek. Best wishes Martin

This gets better. I hear one of the judges will be that well known expert on classical music: Meatloaf !

LOL, it was so hilarious, that video! And the Jenkins laugh at the end is quite out of time, lol, that makes you wonder "Was she really paying attention?". Well, I think the way Ricardo acts and the gestures he makes when speaking just show the theatrical nature that is so necessary in opera.

Well, not long to wait now until our worst fears could be realised. Don't know how Katherine got involved in this. The money must be good !! Of course like all reality shows the eventual winner won't be the one who can sing opera best. It'll be the celebrity with the biggest audience following in their normal career, like the Corrie pint-puller Kym Marsh ! At least Waitrose will get to hear their favourite song once again. It's just a shame you can't vote for the lady singing it !!

Hello everyone Every time I read, hear or see something about this programme just adds to the reasons I won't be watching! I may go outside and watch the snow thaw instead! Best wishes Grant
