Yes Gerrit,
I used to think (once my German had got reasonable
& we'd be in Holland), that I could understand at least 50%
of spoken Dutch but most of written.
By the way, where are (?) you in Australia at the
moment?
We live 110 km South of Sydney in a suburb called
Oak Flats.
It's sort of a suburb of Wollongong.
If your relatives or friends are near here we might be able to
meet.
When you answer I'll give you the phone no.
I realise the chances are slim because Australia is colossal.

At last, I have managed to prepare and upload the discussion about Hayley on "Kaffee Oder Tee" and here it is: Studio discussion (8.7 minutes, .wmv, 19MB) (now hosted by Gerrit ) I'd be delighted if someone would tell me the details of what was said - especially any new information that we might not already know! I've listened to it once together with my wife & will
listen a few more times so's to get what was said
straight in my mind.
Then I'll have to decide what form to put it in.
My first reaction is to write down a series of points
that he makes & post those first straight onto this thread.
I'll try to be objective.

Hi Dave, as the "erudite" German member of HWI, I am delighted to tell you and everybody else about the contents of this discussion  : To begin with, Frank Laufenberg who presents the German edition of ODYSSEY obviously is not overly enthusiastic about the album. He acknowledges that Hayley has a wonderful voice but adds it had the effect to appeal to grandmothers who would respond like "Oh, how sweet!" Mr. Laufenberg criticizes Hayley singing "Both Sides Now" (and we all now how dear that song is to her) as she were too young for that. Talking about age, Mr. Laufenberg apparently has difficulty with arithmetic. He says, Hayley was born in 1987, so she was "15...no, 12...13" when she recorded PURE in 2003. What is more, he says that officially Hayley were born in 1987 yet earlier biographies stated she was born in 1984. On the other hand, Mr. Laufenberg calls PURE Hayley's first album omitting the fact that it really is Hayley's fourth work, PURE being the first internationally released album. So much for thorough research. However, the album was on display, a piece from Hayley's "Both Sides Now" video is shown and the tour dates were zoomed on. Who cares for the personal taste of Frank Laufenberg? He said Hayley had a wonderful voice and she looked nice (slightly understated). And that's the bottom line! Regards, Holger |

Very Good Holger!
I was quite disappointed with Frank's
research myself.
He got her age right at first & then dropped
2 years off it.
He discredits also the fact that she did busk.
She also does not just sing for Grandmas &
Grandpas.
At least he describes her voice at school
as a 'killer' voice!!
Otherwise I'd like to know what his reputation
is like in Germany.
The Title Music Stories is apt it seems!

Cheers, Dave Regardless of any translation (which would be nice anyway) this is obviously a watchable programme, presumably has a reasonably-sized clientele and composed of the sort of audience that would be interested in Hayley. If a reasonably important station that must be worth a six fingure sum in anyone's currency of free air-time expposure. Peter |

Frank Laufenberg IS an authority - but not on classical music, nor on classical crossover.
Being a dinosaur as to radio hosting, he can rightfully be called an expert on pop and rock music. He even holds a chair on pop music at the Musikhochschule (music college) in Karlsruhe.
So that explains perhaps why he takes a critical view to a young soprano interpreting a Joni Mitchell song. But by this he loses objectivity toward the superb quality of Hayley's version.
Yet, as I said, what counts is that Hayley again received some attention in the German media and after seeing Hayley's video, Mr. Laufenberg's opinion anyway is quickly forgotten.

He was also asked about Hayley's chances, and, from first hearing I think he said that if Hayley's voice held, she would have a good chance. My impression of the chat was that there were negative comments, but they were sympathetically negative (she could turn out right) , not judgmentally negative (it's rubbish). For me there was an interesting surprise at 6:01 in the video, when a reference was made to Heintje. Heintje? Well, Heintje was born on 12 August 1955 (!) and was a Dutch boy soprano in the 60's. He became very popular in Germany, and even now, long after his voice has broken, he releases CDs! In 1967 he released a Dutch song "Mama" as a single, which became a hit in Germany, despite being Dutch. The single sold 5 million copies in Germany and Austria. Conversely, his first German single "Ich bau dir ein Schloss" (I build you a castle) became his first number 1 hit in ... Holland! One German fan site (http://heintje.de.ms/) on Google refers to Heintje as "der erfolgreichste deutschsprachige Sänger aller Zeiten" (the most successful German language singer of all time). So you see, I was very surprised at this reference. And if Hayley can emulate Heintje's success in Germany, she will do very, very well indeed ... Now I bet most of you didn't know a thing about this .... Gerrit |

Kevin, a partial-german friend of mine, did translate the "coffee-or-tee-TV-video" for me: Mr. Laufenberg was delighted about Hayley's Voice and physical appearance, and he foretelled her a great future the next 10 years "WENN man sie die RICHTIGEN Lieder singen laesst" (if the record-companys let her sing the right, appropriate songs !!!
