Yes, Jillian, that is what I am getting to. It is so frustrating, knowing Hayley as we do, and seeing what she does and how hard she works, that all of that seems to go unrecognised as far as the media is concerned, just because she is an original artist who does things her own way.
Last nights performance was utterly brilliant. Absolutely fabulous. How many other singers in the world could have done that? The seamless transition from Hayley's voice to Vera's, (and the image as well) was wonderful, and only made possible by Hayley singing so well out of her comfort zone. She sounded so much like Dame Vera that it was uncanny, only her different phrasing and accent gave the game away. Yet the BBC simply took it for granted. At the launch I felt she struggled a bit with the low notes in that song, at the Festival she nailed it. And yet her whole performance was a tribute to Dame Vera, and Hayley was treated as largely anonymous. I know that Hayley must have put a lot of effort into getting that right, and that that effort is largely unrecognised by the media is really galling. If someone had done that on a TV talent show, she would have had people raving about it.
Hayley has a record of taking other people's theme songs and improving on them. But she always makes sure she shows proper respect for the original artists, Kate Bush, Joni Michell, Eva Cassidy, you name it. What's the point of singing someone else's song if you can't improve on it. This ought to be the test of all the derivitive stuff on showns lie the X Factor, but somehow it isn't.
Hayley might even have done that to Dame Vera, dare I say that she sang that song better than the original? Dame Vera I'm sure, recognises Hayley for the wonderful singer that she is, and the converse is also true. I don't want to split hairs. I love them both.
And yes, I agree with those who say the Festival of Remembrance is all about those fallen heroes who "for our tomorrow gave their today". Compared to that, any arguments about the merits of singers is trivial. I don't want to take anything away from that. That goes without saying and is not the point I was making.
But that being said, I would like to know why it is that Hayley can sing so wonderfully and not be even mentioned, whilst vastly inferior singers get praised to the rooftops. Somebody has some questions to answer. I suspect it is all about money. and who stands to make it in the end.
