Hi does anyone know any famous French people, (not necessarily personally ) and know their birthday, age, where they were born (In France), their achievements and their plans for the future. I have to do another presentation, this time for French famous people, and I don't know any or even where to start really. Now I've finished my Spanish homework I've started on my French which needs to be done by Tuesday, but preferably by tomorrow...personally though I don't think that's going to happen at this rate! Thank you very much Sing xxx

Hi Sing! Over at Wikipedia you'll find a list of French musicians, filmmakers, writers, etc. Hope this helps you out! Best wishes, Joe

My favourite French musicians are Emma Shapplin and Eric Levi (the composer behind choral group, Era), but... I don't know how "famous" they are. :/

Well, don't choose Emma Shapplin, as there is zero information about her. She doesn't really have any websites either (though an official one is opening soon). Good luck with your assignment.

It's a pity that I see that thread only now because as I'm french I could have really helped you!! Are you studying french? If you are, it's great because it's a wonderful language!! But I'm not objective!! If you have any other questions about France and/or french people or need help, don't forget to ask, I'll be very happy to help you!!

What a lovely way of introducing yourself. Welcome too. Vive la difference is meant in another context but diversity is what life is all about. I'm English (not British!) to the core yet love the skirl of the Scottish pipes and the lilt of a Welsh choir... I won't go on save to repeat Vive la difference! Peter S.

Elliot you're right. But we are also very famous for our great writers, poets and philosophers lik Racine, Rousseau, Baudelaire, Descartes... About contemporary french people, there are also Jean-Michel Jarre's father, Maurice Jarre, some names from the Resistance too like Le Général de Gaulle or Jean Moulin (who lived in my town!! ) And of course, historical figures: the one you named, Louis XVI, also Henri IV, not forget Louis XVI who was decapitated during the Revolution... But what we are very famous for are really our writers who mostly took part also to the historical and political life a lot. You have for example Victor Hugo, VERY famous (you can't know him! He wrote Les Misérables) and Voltaire. As important french figures there were also Chopin, George Sand, Jeanne d'Arc... The more I write, the more names come to my mind!! So think I'll stop here! But there are a LOOOT of famous french people and some whose careers are richer and more important than Catherine Deneuve and Sophie Marceau! I mean, they are great actress (especially Sophie Marceau that I love! ) but they havn't brought something special to the world, for french or world culture as others french figures could have.

Juliette... You're right of course (And welcome to the forum, BTW . But I figured a small selection of people the rest of the world outside France would almost certainly have heard of was the best way to go. I'd certainly have included The Duc de Conde else, who is arguably France's greatest ever general (Napoleon being Corsican, his Frenchness is of doubtful provenance, as it were ). So I just went with a few people I remembered off the top of my head. I should have included Alexandre Dumas, though... Being English, I simply preferred to forget about Jeanne, of course

Hi juliettet Welcome to the forum!! Yes I am studying French for A-level and am and I'm enjoying it enormously, :Dit's my favourite of my four A-level subjects at the moment, though history comes in as a close second... ..I was wondering, could you recommend any french films? you see, our teachers have told us that one of the best ways to learn a language is by watching their films but I don't really know where to start looking, do you have any favourites/ recommendations? thank you very much best wishes Sing

Hi everyone, I really appreciate your suggestions, thank you very much for helping me, I eventually made a presentation on Eric Cantona as, for some reason, he was the person I could find the most to write about, well, enough to write a presentation on with my limited French...but I really actually enjoyed looking through all the other suggestions, and spent a long time on wikipedia reading through Famous French people and learned a lot about them... so thanks again!!! I handed my presentation in yesterday and will hopefully have it handed back to me, marked tomorrow, then I will have to present it to the class, which isn't so bad as there's only four of us, but i'm nervous with my french pronounciation. I've also now been given even more French homework, which is to learn all the irregular perfect tense verbs and their endings for a test on Friday...fingers crossed I'll be able to remember them, I think I do struggle a bit with verbs and verb endings- which we were meant to be practising in our presentations. anyway, sorry, i think i've drifted a bit off topic...i just mostly wanted to let you know that I really appreciate you giving me advice and ideas- thank you Sing x
