My curiosity got the better of me and I watched a video of Jackie Evancho singing Dark Waltz. Here's the video of Jackie Evancho singing "Dark Waltz" on Dancing with the Stars: Hayley sounds more natural when she sings it. Richard

Not bad but covering such a demanding song will never match Hayley's original... and of course it was chopped down for the routine. I notice that it was uploaded nearly 3 years ago when Jackie was just turned 12... hard to believe but she's 15 now! And something else I'd not realised before, her birthday is April 9th., the day before Hayley's! Cheers, Dave

Well, there ARE singers that don't make me cringe when they cover a Hayley song. People like Rebecca Newman and Siobhan Owen. I'm afraid Jackie isn't one of them.

I remember she also sang at one of the presidential Prayer Breakfasts a few years ago... something Andrea Bocelli has done before, too. Something tells me Josh Groban won't be at this one (he sang at Obama's)!

I can't resist posting these two videos for comparison purposes: I know which one I prefer! Richard

I think the best rendition of that song I have heard recently was by Mary-Jess. I remember hearing her rehearsing it with my friend Alan on piano at my church. That final note took my breath away (as well as hers no doubt). It is one of the songs on her current tour setlist.

You can't really compare them as Jackie sounds like a mezzo while the twins are sopranos. I do prefer a soprano voice which is why I've never been a fan of Katherine Jenkins. It's just too low !

Interesting comparison there but come on, if we are looking for a definitive performance, you have to watch it in the musical setting and performed by a top singer of that genre. Such as the following... and as for the ending at 3m:11s, well... what an ending.
Pleased for Jackie though, it's a pretty big gig!

The lowness isn't the only problem with me. It's also her tendency to use the "yawning" affect. It can't possibly be good technique. Hayley used to do it a bit (on her early albums) before Dame Malvina Major got a hold of her.

I said 'a' top singer, not 'the', but I happen to prefer the American Sierra to the British Sarah! Dave

To be fair, I had yet to play one of the videos. Upon finally listening (to CR, Sarah Brightman, Sierra, and Jackie, in that order) I realized I barely even knew the song, anyway.
The verdict is: I DO prefer Sarah's out of all of them. Second place goes to Hannah & Naomi! Sierra... too much warbly opera for me. Even Sarah didn't do that, but then, I don't believe she studied opera until after her time on broadway. Also, it's not an opera song. Jackie's was last place, though. I did not end up listening to the entirety of Sierra's or Jackie's.
