Thanks for that, Jeff! As you said in another thread, David Bowie narrated the story of Peter and the Wolf in a 1978 recording. Listen to the first five minutes here: RIP David Bowie. Richard

I got David Bowie's Blackstar album the other day, such a strange piece of work, even the album packaging is most unusual, black gloss print on matt black paper.
I remember in my early teens exchanging Bowie albums in school with the other lads because few of us could afford to buy them all, when "Home Taping was killing music" one of them was on the Decca / Deram label: The World of David Bowie.

I watched the videos of "Lazarus" and Blackstar" yesterday and they are really grim and bleak but of course he knew he was dying when he made them. The fact he kept that to himself and close family doesn't surprise me. It's hard to tell people you have cancer. When I was at school in the 70s transistor radios were banned but I remember we'd huddle behind the bikesheds at lunchtime with a radio and listen to the new Top 20 with Alan Freeman (the chart came out on Tuesday lunchtime in those days) and we'd get excited if "Starman" or "Life on Mars" was near the top of the chart. Funnily enough I watched the space station this morning as it went overhead at 7.38am (the weatherman on Radio 5 tipped us off!) and I thought of Major Tom ! Incredible to think that tiny golden speck in the sky is travelling at 17000 mph ! Thanks for the memories Comet and Richard. What I love about this forum is the wealth of experience and knowledge that us mature members enjoying their "Golden Years" are able to bring to threads like this. Interestingly I bought a double album of greatest hits of David Bowie called Nothing Has Changed just before Christmas to play at a Christmas party. It was a 2014 compilation but it already had a track from the album Blackstar on it called Sue (Or In A Season of Crime) The sleeve notes say "Released as a single in November 2014" I watched a recently compiled documentary about David's life, in almost every scene he has a cigarette in his hand, during interviews, walking on the streets, rehearsals and performances, I don't suppose there is much point in asking what killed him Chloe was on the Late Late show on Friday night (15th Jan) singing a Don McClean song. She was singing in the National Concert Hall on Saturday the 16th Jan 2016 Marty had Lisa Lamb's album up as album of the week last week and played a track from it on each day. Placido Domingo is in concert tonight at The Point Depot Dublin which is now named after some telephone company.

Amazing, thanks Richard
I listen to a few of these songs and I realize this was a part of my life, the words, the moods they create, we didin't seek them out, they just arrived through the radio or from a shop on the street or someone you might have worked with singing as they work or in a nightclub and they became a part of your life.
I wasn't an active Eagles fan but I had a few workmates who were and all of this is bringing back images of these lads that I have not seen since 1978, wonder what they are all up to now.

Yes, I agree, they were part of life back then. They were never a band to grab your attention, the way Bowie did for example, but when you listen carefully you realise they were well crafted and well performed songs that you enjoy listening to. RIP Glenn.

It is now exactly one year since Hayley's last UK concert at Union Chapel, or indeed any public appearance. There were also December concerts in Ireland and Wisconsin but nothing since or planned (to our knowledge). What's more there has been no statement or even gossip as to why! Admittedly, there have been numerous indications that Hayley has been in one or recording studios during this period but, again, no firm news on the intention or motive. I would be the first to also point out that Hayley's private life is private and we should not delve or speculate but what I don't understand is that if Hayley is on some sort of sabbatical from public appearance then why not say that? We sincere and devoted fans would understand and be fully supportive. Meanwhile we get more and more frustrated! Martin I didn't want to reply to this without giving it some thought. (I can hear the sighs from here.. Oh no, Comet has been thinking again). I suppose most of us here would like to think we are included in the category of : We sincere and devoted fans would understand and be fully supportive. I sometimes wonder was Hayley always telling us something through the lyrics of her songs, were we always to busy talking to listen to what she had been saying all along. (Voice in background whispers "Is 'e on wackey backey or somethin' ? banged 'is 'ed again") As a group we were never very good at analysing or even just discussing the song lyrics, the "What do you think she means by that" We always noticed and loved the voice, but pretty much ignored the mind behind the lyrics of songs like Let me lie, I believe, Wings to Fly and On the wings of time. I Believe from Japanese Songs could take years to anylyse, that is one deep and dark set of lyrics. Have a listen to it and read the lyrics.

Comet, I have spent years listening to and analysing Hayley's song lyrics. I might have mentioned before a very vivid dream I had in late 2007, in which I was told very strongly to listen to Hayley's lyrics - there would be a message there for me. That was the start of it. A few months later HSJS was released. An album on which I could relate to most of the songs. In fact most of them seemed to me to be about incidents in my life. "Wings to Fly" about the time in my youth when I was a keen glider pilot. The May day when I met my wife, vividly described (Hana). The time we spent in Paris after I has been working out there for most of the winter (Snowflower). The day I left school (Dogwood Flower). It is all there. But one thing I didn't understand were songs like 1000 Winds and Nada Sousou. What's all this stuff about death and bereavement. But nonetheless the relentless bombardment continued. More bereavement songs on HSJS2, and lots of stuff about stars and angels, which were featured in the original dream. For a time it felt as if every other song Hayley sang was meant to remind me of that dream. Well, the reason I didn't understand the death and bereavement songs was that those events were in the future. I know all about them now, after my wife died back in 2013. And believe me those songs are brilliant, describing exactly how you feel and react. I have even had an ongoing project since Sue died of finding and digitising thousands of old photos ("turning the pages of old photographs"). Tsubomi is probably a song you would never understand if you hadn't been through it. I didn't before Sue died. With its blockbuster of a first line "Only now I know of Time". That is right, your whole understanding of the nature of time changes. Another brilliant lyric. All those songs have helped me a lot. The thought that comes to mind is if someone was trying to get a message to me, how better to get me to take notice than to put the words into the mouth of my favourite singer. It has taken me a long time to get to the bottom of those songs. I'm probably not there yet. Deep and dark they certainly are, but they are also uncompromisingly positive. Now who has been banged on the head or been on the wacky baccy? Martin D

Hi Martin, for some reason I got the impression that the wings in Wings to Fly were of the Angelic variety because of the "Bless me with some wings" and the "How can I earn the wings" and other symbolic use of "The Light"
These lines from I Believe are extremely strong :
In this world full of lies I see you trying to smile A smile to survive
I understand your wary face Your distrusting embrace That I recognize
Yes I have been listening to Japanese songs again
