Another hot day in Christchurch so I went to Lyttleton Harbour to go on the 1907 steam tug boat called Lyttleton. The light house is on a lean because of the big earthquake in September. The skipper We were headed for the head of the harbour. We saw some Hector dolphins but they were too quick to get a photo of one The boiler which provides the steam for the two engines. These are the same type of boiler the Titanic used but it had 29 of them. Boy it was hot where the stokers were shovelling coal.

Hi everyone, here's a public link to an album in my Facebook, you should be able to see it even if you don't have Facebook: www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2073495&id=1238100683&l=4753b4888bThe pics are taken this early afternoon, in my neighbourhood.... My intention was to give a try to my new camera (a Canon PowerShot SX210 IS) and to try to catch this special pale light of winter in Barcelona. My photograph skills are not comparable to most of the members who usually post pictures here, but I hope to be learning little by little,, so any advices are very welcome... Also, my neighborhood is not that interesting, not even snowy. Michal

While waiting for the Royal Wedding to start I went on the Transalpine Train from Christchurch to Greymouth and back. This is the 6th best train journey in the World. The train consisted 2 Diesel-Electric locos plus 4 carriages (1 includes a cafe) and an outdoor viewing carriage and a baggage car. Today was a glorious Autumn day with not a cloud in the sky on both sides of the South Island which is highly unusual. A view of the Waimakariri River Gorge Looking towards the Southern Alps on the way to Arthur's Pass The Upper Waimakariri River Lake Brunner on the West Coast Greymouth on the West Coast with the Grey River on the right.

Today at the Christchurch Airport there was an open day for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. They had cheap helicopter rides over Christchurch so I went on a Robinson (similar to Tracy's I think). Looking over Hagley Park toward the Port Hills. This is the damaged CBD area. The badly damaged Cathedral

Hello everyone! I posted links to my albums on the Andrea Motis thread, but I wanted to share this concrete picture here, as it is a specially tender one: 6 year old Elsa Armengou making her last minute practices on the trumpet before the concert, with her friend listening to her with attention. (don't worry, got the permission of the parents to make the pics public) Michal

Hi all While recently on holiday in Spain, I took this looking west from my balcony: Sunset, Straits of GibraltarOn the left is the north coast of Africa (possibly around Ceuta) crossing to Gibraltar on the right which is then attached to mainland Spain on the far right. Kind regards Colin

Hi everyone, With Hayley over in Washington DC today, we have a little piece of America moored tonight exactly 7 miles from my house! It is the latest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier George H W Bush, out on its first deployment since being commissioned 2 years ago - and it's here! It's too large to enter Portsmouth Harbour so I went to a nearby place called Stokes Bay to see it, moored offshore in The Solent. Here is a photo I took from the rear, with the Isle of Wight in the background and an entourage of support ships surrounding it. There are thousands of US sailors out and about on shore leave here this weekend! USS George H W Bush in The Solent 27 May 2011 Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave
Thanks for that photo. I had a look from this side of the Solent yesterday. The local paper states it is the world's largest warship at 97,000 tons. There are 5,300 sailors and crew onboard also over 70 aircraft. The ship is "dry" so the public houses in Portsmouth have ordered twice the amount of alcoholic beverages they normally do.
cheers
Tony

Great photo, Dave. I looked up the USS George H W Bush on wikipedia and they give a displacement of 102,000 long tons (114,000 short tons) and a length of 1,092 feet with an aircraft compliment of 90 fixed wing and helicopters. Two nuclear reactors and 4 steam turbines give her a max speed in excess of 30 knots (56+km/hr). What a monster! We don't see these very often in Kansas. BillR
