Misha Ge placed 6th place at the World Championships in Shanghai, China! I was excited to see his programs, including the Hayley short program, on my TV, broadcast by CBC (the US skating coverage is abysmal! I'm so lucky to live near Canada!).

Guess what! I just found this short video, of Mao Asada (JPN), Joannie Rochette (CAN), and Carolina Kostner (ITA) practicing a skating routine for the very popular Japanese skating show, The Ice. I'm not exactly sure when it is, but I know it's very soon, because skaters are tweeting about travelling to Japan or doing rehearsals there for this show. Anyway, check out the music!! This ice show is normally televised in Japan, so I always find excellent videos of the event. So, there will hopefully be a good video soon! I'm excited to finally see this song used in skating!! Actually, the song itself has been used, but it was the version by 2 Cellos used in an ice tour in Europe a few years ago, with 2 Cellos playing live, no less.

Here it is!!! At first at the beginning, I got worried that they didn't use Hayley's version after all, but the whole program seems to go back and forth between the Karl Jenkins version and Hayley's. I thought the other part was 2 Cellos, but upon research, their version contains no singing, while Karl Jenkins' does. That must've been a lot of work by the music editing people! But the result was actually very beautiful. The "explosive" part was choreographed brilliantly. I absolutely love this program! In order of appearance, it's Joannie Rochette from Canada, Carolina Kostner of Italy, and Mao Asada of Japan. Joannie Rochette was the bronze medallist in Vancouver in 2010. Carolina Kostner is a world and European champion, and won bronze in Sochi in 2014. Mao Asada is a 2-time world champion, and won silver in 2010. I saw Joannie live twice in skating shows, including Stars on Ice. I saw Carolina at Skate America in Portland in 2010. I've never seen Mao Asada live.

What an excellent production both visually and musically, very well done to the production team. Great find, Libby! Cheers, Dave Yeah, that's because the original piece is longer, so that particular part of the music comes more than once. The first time is right at the beginning when Mao Asada comes on, with just a violin playing. It was a more delicate effect there, which I think was very effective in that moment. It was nice that they put Hayley's part in twice! I think the reason they didn't use Hayley's whole recording because they wanted a balance between voices and instrumental. I think the balance is great, because this piece of music is great with people singing and without. In searching through the hashtag #theice2015 I found several tweets saying how they loved the program. And, I can't find that one anymore, but there was a tweet from a Mao Asada twitter page (she doesn't have her own page) showing Hayley's Benedictus via soundhound. Lots of Benedictus love with this gorgeous program! Mostly in Japan, of course, but with 2 of the skaters from other parts of the world, other skating fans will be able to enjoy it as well. Not to mention that Japanese skaters have fans from around the world, too. I just remembered that that both Mao Asada's and Joannie Rochette's mothers passed away. Joannie's mother suffered a heart attack during the 2010 Olympics, before the ladies' competition. Joannie still managed to skate beautifully and win the bronze medal. Mao's mother died in late 2013, if I remember correctly, which would have been during the Olympic season. Her mother had been ill for a while. I remember she withdrew from a competition to go be with her mother at the hospital at one point.

Here is another HQ version which doesn't contain any announcement. Sounds are just "Benedictus" by Karl Jenkins, Mike Brewer, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Hayley and National Youth Choir of Great Britain. According to a goer, a standing ovation was long lasting after 3 skaters finished the skating.

Thanks, Maya! I actually don't mind the announcements, since it's only at the beginning. I kind of like the way Japanese commentators/announcers talk, they sound enthusiastic while actually speaking quite softly.

Thanks to a Japanese fan from the Official forum, here is a video of young 2-time Japanese national champion, 2015 World silver medallist, and just this weekend, the 2015 NHK trophy champion, Satoko Miyahara. For her exhibition program this year, she's skating to Wings to Fly by Hayley! This is the NHK trophy, which she just won; the other song, Firedance, is her short program, an encore performance. She was also 3rd place at Skate America in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Here's the video (no encore performance): She skated to Hayley's music in America! You know what this means, right?? This is the first time anyone's ever skated to one of Hayley's Japanese songs in America! She will also skate to it in Boston if she makes it to the World championships, which are in Boston in March! And she is very likely to make it. She also might be skating to it in Barcelona, Spain for the Grand Prix final, if she places high enough. I now have the Tsubasa wo Kudasai part from the end stuck in my head, and I'm quite enjoying that.

My statement that Satoko's performance to Wings To Fly at Skate America is the first time a skater has performed to one of Hayley's Japanese songs in the US had me thinking. How many times has a skater performed to any of Hayley's songs in the US? I almost wondered if anyone ever had, since most of the skaters are Japanese performing them at Japanese ice shows, and some of the NBC shows used to be held in Ontario, Canada (in particular, the Kurt Browning special in which Hayley appeared). I have all of the "skating to Hayley" performances in my Favorites. So, I looked up where all of the skating shows took place, to see if any of them were in the US. Here's the list of skating shows/events in the US in which a skater performed to one or more of Hayley's songs: Katarina Witt & Friends:Air date: January 2005 Songs: Amazing Grace and Who Painted the Moon Black? Skater(s): Yuka Sato, Katarina Witt, & Kristi Yamaguchi Location: Trenton, New Jersey Stars on Ice tour (2005?):Song: Amazing Grace Skater: Yuka Sato Location: all across the US! (the video is from Nashville, Tennessee) Skate for the Heart:Air date: January 2008 Song: Prayer Skater: Ekaterina Gordeeva (Katia) Location: Uncaseville, Connecticut Skate America 2015:Date: November 29, 2015 Song: Wings to Fly Skater: Satoko Miyahara Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

I think this was to promote the Katarina Witt show:

Satoko Miyahara won the silver medal at the Grand Prix final in Barcelona, Spain today. So, she got to perform in the gala, skating of course to Hayley again. This time when they show what music she's skating to, they show the Japanese title with the English, and show Hayley's name!
