I also feel that the title of this song, The Moon Represents My Heart, is quite strange as being translated from Chinese word by word. I am also always confused with its actual meaning with this phrase in the lyric. I realize that the moon itself stands for “pure” and “true” in Chinese literature. The title might mean “It's True In My Heart”. I am not really sure. If anyone knows its exact meaning, please let me know. Fred Hi Fred and members. Welcome to the forum, Fred. She has been very popular and her songs are sung by many Japanese still at Karaoke bar. The title of the song in Japanese was "月は何でも知っている" or in English translation "The moon knows everything". This is totally different from the official English title but as I read the translated lyric in Japanese, "The moon knows everything" is more suited, I feel. Best wishes. Maya |

As much as I admire the humble and dignified Hayley that we typically see in concert, there is something to be said for those occasions when she cuts loose a bit. Sometimes I think there’s an inner Hayley that we barely know.

Sometimes I think there’s an inner Hayley that we barely know. This is a great point, I have been lucky enough to be witness to a few of the times Hayley has "cut loose". I can only describe it as seems to me like Hayley considers us (HWI Members), more like friends than fans (as she knows a "few" members by name, you know who you are..  ) and that she is acting like she would at home with her friends, very relaxed and she does "cut loose" sometimes and has some fun with us. After all the concerts in the most part are her Job and the limited time she gives to us after the events are not are requirement in the slightest (like say a signing for example, I'm not sure if these are a requirement as such but I'm sure are classed as part of the concert in someway and I know Hayley is pleased & happy to do them). This is her own free time she chooses to spends with us before she is called away or we get kicked out for which I am always grateful to have the opportunity to do so.* (Spending time with Hayley that is, but getting kicked out of the venue with Hayley like some here may be considered a bonus )Dean |

Regarding the English translation of the song title, I personally think it's correct. Regardless of the waxing and waning , the moon is always in the sky, just like a heart full of love. BTW, this song is being seen as the second anthem in my country, so we're really happy to see Hayley perform this beautiful song here in Taiwan : ) And thanks a lot for Dave's video! Although I live in Taiwan and I watched TV broadcast of this performance, the local TV station cut some parts of Hayley's singing, including "The Moon Represents My Heart" ! Link deleted due to copyright infringement. |

I am very pleased that Hayley has become so popular in Taiwan  Thanks very much for sharing the YouTube videos. However we don't encourage links to videos containing full songs which are commercially available. Nana Mouskouri's version was likely copied from a CD and uploaded which we disapprove most strongly. Its so funny that people mention Terese Teng... the reason being that I ran into her on two occasions as a kid totally by chance back when my parents were missionaries in Taiwan...
Once when we were coming through customs at Taipei airport - right where the customs folks go through your baggage... well she was right behind our family.
The next time was an occasion where we needed to book tickets back from Hong Kong to Taiwan at the China Airlines office in Hong Kong. I just sat there in this waiting room and there was this lady that was sitting right next to me very dignified looking, but I was a bit uncomfortable with a stranger being so close so just read my book lol... so didn't look make eye contact... and then she left. Anyways my father told me that it was this famous lady singer called Terese Teng... and then i did recognize her... (she didn't seem too friendly!)
I must admit that as a kid I was totally clueless as to how famous she was in Taiwan and in China... but the experience was much like the time that we eating at one of the first McDonald's in Taiwan back in the early 80s, and in strode the premier of Taiwan - Sun Yun-suan - (after a bunch of black suited security agents came in and scanned the place first) who promptly ordered I think a Big Mac... kind of surreal to me as a kid... but funny too...
I'm glad Hayley had a good time in Taiwan... I hope she drove south and visited Kenting because that part of Taiwan just rocks...

PPS: now that I think of it Hayley should do decently with a tonal language like Mandarin given that she is pitch perfect! I just listened to "Moon Represents My Heart" and Hayley does okay with the Mandarin pronunciation... not like a native speaker but okay (there is no way to expect that of her) To me she did get one part noticeably wrong "wo di" instead of "wo de" = mine - but no big deal... Her voice sounds nice as usual so you hardly even notice it lol Good job Hayley... Hi, Peter I will not argue too much on it. Basically, what Hayley sang “wo di” meaning “my” in the song “The Moon Represents My Heart” was correct. I think that she might get some professional help on singing this song (lyric) . The character “de” (sounded like dә close to a short o) and the character “di” (sounded like dee but shorter) are the same in writing with different meanings. In singing, in order to produce smooth beautiful sound between the words of the lyrics, “di” would be used instead of “de”. You may find a lot of songs of Chinese classic in 50' and 60' at which singers would sing “di” not “de”. But, nowadays, many Chinese pop singers would sing “de” instead of “di”. Both sounds have the same character in writing, which have different meanings when they are spoken with different sounds and tones. For singing, they are interchangeable. People get accustomed for their uses in lyrics. You may also observe the male singer, Shin, singing “wo di xin”(my heart) not "wo de xin" in the lyric duetted with Hayley in this song. I really like Hayley singing “di” between words because it makes the sound more beautifully and classically. I predict that her next market will be in mainland China after her success and popular in Taiwan, and reasonably believe Hayley has begun to learn Chinese language. I think Chinese(Mandarin) is much easier to learn than Japanese either in singing or speaking. For a language talent like Hayley, it won't be too hard Always, Fred |
