Music award noms for Wellington artists

Wellington singers Brooke Fraser and Hollie Smith will compete against Christchurch-born international star Hayley Westenra for the title of Best Female Solo Artist in the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

The list of finalists across 15 categories was announced at a function in Auckland tonight ahead of the awards ceremony on October 18.

Fraser's Albertine and Smith's Long Player are also vying for the Album of the Year Award, against Opshop's Second Hand Planet, Evermore's Real Life and The Mint Chicks' Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No!

In the running for Best Male Solo Artist are Greg Johnson, now based in the United States, Paul McLaney and Tim Finn.

Finalists for Best Group are Opshop, Evermore and The Mint Chicks who are also the three contenders for Best Rock Album.

All of the finalists for Best Aotearoa Roots Album are from Wellington - Age Pryor for Shanks Pony, Smith for Long Player, and The Black Seeds for Into the Dojo.

The Black Seeds are also finalists in the People's Choice Award, along with Shapeshifter, Opshop, Brooke Fraser and Evermore.

New Zealand's first rock'n'roll star Johnny Devlin was tonight announced as the first recipient of a legacy award and will be inducted to the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

This is excellent news, Richard! Thanks for the information.
I suppose Hayley won't be in New Zealand for the ceremony but it would be great to see her efforts recognized with an award.
Here is an interesting quote published in 'One News':

We were wondering if Hayley would be back in New Zealand for two weeks between Anzac Ceremony on October 4th and the National Gallery workshop in London at the end of the month. What if she was returning to attend the NZ Music Awards? It's on the 18th of October.

Ah Ha!! That sounds quite logical Stephany and might be what Dave was teasing us about in an earlier post.

Put in an appearance at a strategic event in New Zealand's music calender AND spend a bit of time with family and friends. Sounds like a plan to me!

Now, if she's going, she will probably sing at least one song during the ceremony. I'm very curious as to what she would pick in such an occasion. Last time she attended the NZ awards she backed another group with her (beautiful) vocals.
Her range of music is so wide that choosing a single song must really be a daunting task. 'Pokarekare Ana' and 'Hine e Hine' are too well-known in her homecountry so it's going to be interesting to see what Hayley thinks is best to showcase her wonderful talents to her Kiwi fellows.
