It was reported in the Christchurch Press today that Haley will be singing Rule Britannia before every England game in the World Cup Soccer. I wonder if any one else knew about this.Hopefully it would be broadcast so someone can video it. When's the world cup? I hope that doesn't clash with pre-fixed concerts as one never knows when they will be playing what match, does one--or that it means she's not having any holiday after all. From which question you might deduce I'm not a football fan! My sport is watching Wimbledon on the box with a bowl of strawberries and cream and a magnum of champagne on ice! Peter Hi Peter, I'm trying to picture you with your strawberries and champaigne.. Heh-heh! You do like the fine things in life!!! A couple of years ago I decided to try growing my own strawberries in some pots outside my porch (south facing with plenty of sun) It was great fun... I visited several garden centres before finding some strawberry pots which I liked (although you could probably grow strawberries in just about anything- even an old mack! ) I bought 6 light coloured clay pots (unglazed- I prefered the "natural" finish) and 4 varieties of strawberry plant. 6 plants of each). Each pot had 4 holes, plus the one at the bottom for drainage of course, so I planted 4 strawberry plants in each pot with plenty of nice rich potting compost. I was amazed at how quicky they grew and developed some healthy fruit after regularly watering them. Some of the runners from the plants started growing under the fence and into my neighbour's garden. My neighbour said she thought I was trying to grow: "Strawberry Fields Forever"... Many thanks for the correction, Ross. Further to what Dave has said, I think for Hayley to sing 'Rule Britannia' in concert in Germany is not only daring, I think it might be somewhat misguided. It is perfectly normal for anthems and patriotic songs to be sung at the matches but I wonder if it inappropriate for concerts in Germany. I also question that song being sung for England, even at the matches. It is a song for Britain - not England. Roger Hi Roger, I know it's easy in hindsight but we should have realised the flaw in the original story at once, for the very reason you mentioned. Rule Britannia is NOT usually (if ever) sung before England matches! What is sung is: Land of Hope and Glory - and I would think that is what will be sung at the World Cup. And I agree that it is probably not a good idea for Hayley to sing Rule Britannia in Germany during the period of World Cup. If tension or fighting develops between rival sets of England and German supporters, this will spill over into the German media and Hayley's concerts could be affected if she sings *any* British patriotic song. It would probably be OK but it's best to be safe than sorry. However, as you know Roger, Hayley has sung Rule Britannia before - but in England! And a very good job she makes of it too, judging by her performance at Hampton Court, London, in 2004. Here is an extract from my review of that concert: This and other reviews of 2004 Hayley Concerts can be found here at HWICheers, Dave

Hi Belinda, many thanks for your scan. Tomorrow I will meet a girl in Berlin - dinner in an Italian restaurant. She is from the western part of Germany near Teuteburger Wald (small mountains) and a huge Hayley fan also. I will tell her the story of Hayley’s singing at football world cup games … . She is living some months in NZ every year. I told her she must go to Christchurch of course. Tomorrow in the restaurant we will watching videos of Hayley at her notebook … and talk about our experiences about “our little star”. Kind regards, Lothar

Hi Peter, The World Cup kicks of on 9th June with England's first match (against Paraguay) being on 10th. The final is on 9th July. I'm not big on football either but I believe the other matches are somewhere in between! I'm with you, Sir. Wimbledon here we come! Roger That should work fine for I'll make a cnfession, I don't actually buy a magnum, the balance would go flat too quickly! I like to savour over a long period. Peter

Possible clashes are: Sat June 10th - Huddersfield (but Hayley could in theory fly from Frankfurt to Leeds or Manchester in time for her concert there - she has about 5 hours to do it.) Sun June 25th - Llandudno (if England win their 1st round group). Hayley would only have about 3 hours to get from Stuttgart to Llandudno - I don't think she could do it except by private plane/helicopter, or the RAF!) Fri June 30th - Savill Court (if England are 2nd in their 1st round group). Match starts at 4pm BST so maybe she can make it, it's near Heathrow airport). There are no other date clashes that I can see and the maximum number of clashes is two. I could do with someone checking this if the Christchurch Press story is confirmed. news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/schedule/group_b/default.stmDave Your assessment is precisely mine the moment I read your dates. However, regardless of Huddersfield being the easiest, the pubicity value of private helicopter if properly organisd wold be high, not just locally but with all three venues should excite the national press. In all three cases I can't see the audience worried about being half-an-hour late and in the worst case scenario, she could simply fill the second half.adding another hour with interval. My concern is that the press are properly tipped off to make the most of the press exposure. Not through any fault of her direct managemnet but down to those to whom such pubicity has been delegated, advance promotion is often NOT her strong point. Peter

Sorry guys it was a false alarm. Gerard put the Press right today. Hayley will be in Germany while the world cup is on but she will be doing her own concerts and one of the songs she will sing is Rule Britannia. Thanks Ross, to you and to Gerald for putting us right. I have amended the thread title and your first post in the thread. This is a pity - but it looks like some good news for our members in Germany who will have the chance to see and hear Hayley in her own concerts at that time. But I'm not at all sure that it's a good idea for Hayley to be singing "Rule Britannia" in those concerts... Germany and England are two of the greatest rivals in World football that you could ever imagine! This is very daring of Hayley! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifCheers, Dave Daring or naive, or simply misinformed? I must say that when the misinformation came out about her singing at the matches I felt Rule Britannia was inappropriate. Our second national anthem has usually been considered Elgar's Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia struck me as somewhat inflammatory in the circumstances! Or have I suddenly gone EU PC!? Heavens forbid! Peter

Hi Andrew. I am delighted you realise there are upmteen varietes of strawberries and took a selection to find out the best tasting ones, or were you trying to extend their overall availability by their harvesting times? I'll make a confession . I don't actually put a magnum in the fridge--it doesn't fit! But more to the point half of it would be flat by the time i got to it. It is in fact two separate bottles, one for lunch (salad) with new potatoes and globes of NEW ZEALAND butter!. The second bottle is for the after-noon with strawberries! At which point I think we had better change subject before we both get our knuckles wrapped (AGAIN!) for raising inappropriate subjects--I think Roger is prowling around this morning! Peter

Hello Peter! I'm on the prowl too this morning, and I have the solution to your problem. Buy a bigger fridge! There is a big store the other end of Oxford Street called Selfridges, and they do! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifPerhaps a glass of champagne might make the World Cup bearable, because I won't be watching it either! Best Wishes, Richard

However, as you know Roger, Hayley has sung Rule Britannia before - but in England! And a very good job she makes of it too, judging by her performance at Hampton Court, London, in 2004. Here is an extract from my review of that concert:
Quote:Next it was time for "Rule, Britannia (Britannia Rules the Waves)". And suddenly, Hayley appeared, striding purposefully towards centre stage accompanied by roars of approval from all of us. "Isn't she from NZ?" I heard someone mutter (as if it mattered!) "It's OK, NZ has the same Queen as us!" came the reply from a chuckling lady nearby.
And Hayley sang it... boy how she sang it! Over the years, I've heard dozens of the World's best Opera stars sing "Rule Britannia" at the Last Night of the Proms. But none has given me greater pleasure and enjoyment than THIS performance. Hayley beckoned for us all to join in the choruses and she sung it really well - there was more flag waving and it gave me a warm glow inside. Then, enthusiastic applause and bouquets... and she was gone. Or so I thought!..

Cheers, Dave Now, Oh wow! Could they, would they, wouldn't it be great, if they invited Hayley to sing that AT THE LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS Peter

Hello Peter! I remember many years ago seeing a man dressed in rugby gear sing "Rule Britannia" at the Last Night of the Proms, and he sang one verse in Welsh. I think it could have been Bryn Terfel before he became famous. Incidentally, you posted your previous message twice, so I deleted the second one. I'm on the ball this morning! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifRichard

IT HAS JUST BEEN CONFIRMED by Steve Abbott that Hayley WILL be singing 'Rule Britannia' and 'Amazing Grace' not at the matches but at the concerts which are apparently being organised by the Germna FA at the time of the World Cup.
