Stars Honoured at the Variety Club Showbiz Awards 2008

The A-list was out in force last night at the Variety Club's 56th Annual Showbiz Awards. Celebrating every aspect of Showbiz the Awards are highly sought after and suitably prized amongst any lucky enough to receive them. This year's event was one of the most successful ever, taking place at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane. The show featured performances from the cast of Hairspray and Hayley Westenra as well as being hosted by the comedian and impressionist John Culshaw.

The Showbiz Awards will be broadcast on Sky 1, on Sunday the 30th of November at 5pm.

And the winners are...

Variety Club Film Award: James McAcoy

Variety Club Comedy Award: Mitchell & Webb

Classical Performer of the year: Hayley Westenra

Stage Performance of the year: Kenneth Branagh

Musical Theatre Award: Hairspray

The Caron Keating Award for Outstanding New Talent: Colin Morgan

Variety Club TV Presenter of the year: Alan Carr

The Bernard Delfont Award for Outstanding Contribution to Showbusiness: Michael Caine

International Award: Al Pacino

Showbusiness Personality: Noel Edmonds

The Heart of Fashion Award was also presented to the long term supporters of Variety Club, Lipsy.

John Sachs, Variety Club’s Showbiz Chairman said:

“The Variety Club Showbiz Awards are the oldest and most established awards in the UK that recognise the outstanding talent in the field of entertainment. Thanks to Jon Culshaw for presenting the show and a big thank you to our broadcaster SKY 1. Due to the generous donations of all our guests and supporters, the vital funds raised tonight will enable Variety Club to continue to support children and young people throughout the UK.”

I downloaded them all, and all of them played fine.

I recently had to reinstall my computer, but now I can even see the videos on HWI main site with Opera. GREAT!

I really enjoyed to see Hayley receiving this award and Hayley singing Santa Lucia (one of my favorites from Treasure) SIMPLY WONDERFUL!

OK... one final version, Santa Lucia only, at the highest quality so far. 2mbps video (h.264 codec again) and the soundtrack is 256kbps mp3 audio.

Hi everyone,

There's also this video of Hayley being interviewed on the red carpet. She talks a little about her involvement in her upcoming film. It's a bit of a bizarre interview... she keeps being asked about the Australian weather. I'm not sure if the interviewer realises the distance between Christchurch and Cairns! The two countries may be near each other, but they're not that close! Lovely to watch Hayley trying to hide her confusion! :rollin

The date on the video is 16/11/08. I think this event took place on 06/11/08. The day after the Northampton concert. I was with her the evening before and she told us she was not well, though you would not have guessed from her performance. You can hear her bronchitis if you listen closely.

In Liverpool wasn't it?

No Martin, it was 16th Nov, the day before the postponed Bridgewater Hall date. I remember Grant & I briefly congratulating her on the award.

Hi Dean,

Yes, that would agree with the date on the video. She certainly seemed to be struggling and coughing, and as you know better than I, it was Bridgewater Hall where she had that horrible experience of being unable to perform. I really felt for her when I read the reports, and you who were there must have been affected even more.
