Thanks Paolo, Here are the lyrics from your address: Now I can follow pretty clearly what the 2 of them are singing. I asked you as I wrongly thought the composer was Italian & that Italian & Spanish have similarities & therefore Portuguese maybe too. I don't know any Portuguese but I seem to remember that the neighbouring Spaniards don't understand it too well either. Once you know what they're singing the words jump out at you....very clearly sung. Graeme Hi Graeme, Forgotten that are not allowed any foreign languages (besides English) in the forum? But your observation about Portuguese and Spanish languages is correct (as I remember from school, in documents from the XV century (I Think) written in Portuguese archaic that have many words similar to Spanish. In our history we had three Spaniards Kings, when our future King disappeared in combat, and never returned from war. Those living on the borders understands each other well, they speak a mixture of Portuguese and Spanish. Though I think that is more easy for we Portuguese people to understand the Spaniards than the way around. The Galician language spoken in Galicia (Spain) it's the most similar to Portuguese language. Well France and Italy are further away so that the language similarities are minors. This went quite off topic, SORRY! To end, when I heard the clip "ROMANZA" it sounded to me Italian, but some words sounded French, I am not criticizing Hayley's accent, I absolutely love "ROMANZA" sung by her. By the way Paolo is Italian, Paulo is Portuguese. Best wishes, Paulo Correia

WOW this is the first time I have ever heard Hayley sing in French. Thanks a million for the brillant video, Drew. This made my day! I wouldn't say that Hayley's pronounciation is flawless, but her French accent is actually very good. You can tell that she has learned the language. I could understand most of the words without reading the lyrics. Bravo - this duet was magnificent. Stephany

I am trying to imagine the great joy and pleasure these photographs and videos are bringing to so many people around the world. To Hayley's family when they cannot be with her, to rise in the morning and log on here to find new photos and videos, It must bring both joy and tears. Delight, laughter and heartache, all at the same time. To Will Martin , Dame Malvina Major and all the families of the members of the choir. We are so lucky to live in an age of almost instant transfer of images and written messages. My own daughter has been traveling abroad for the last 18 months in various war torn countries like Iran and Afghanistan and she seems to be in one place after another, close to some natural disaster or political upheaval, but it is great to see the hundreds of photos they take as they travel, the emails and the occasional phone calls.
Not so long ago you might use two or three rolls of film with 36 on each or 39 if you were careful loading it. 3 minute spools of 8mm or 16mm film often with no sound. Then you had to wait days or weeks before you saw the results.
I am trying to imagine a time in 2038 and people will still be looking at these images and videos, History in the making, captured for the future generations to look back on, all being downloaded and saved to so many computers worldwide, just amazing. (I wonder what format they will be using that far in the future)
Now !........ where's me pen ? ........ I must write someone a letter !

Hayley & Dame Malvina singing the Barcarolle duet.
WHAT A PERFORMANCE !
Apart from the beautiful performance of the music and seeing first hand Malvina's control of breathing and voice all reflected by Hayley
Watching the body language and the comfortable smiles, you can almost feel the love and respect these two people have for each other, this is a gem of a recording, the altar, the woodwork, even the chipped corners of the marble altar rail, but most of all the voices...................

Wow and triple wow. Drew, that video (Barcarolle) is awesome Thanks for bringing it to us. I just can't get over what a fantastic performance that was. Do you know that perhaps someday, when the world wakes up and recognises what a stupendous performer Hayley is (let alone Dame Malvina, I would like to hear more of her work), that video will be priceless. But really I would like to post the thoughts that were mostly inspired by Peter's (Postscript) great post. Yes, there is a lot happening in this thread with good reason. But Peter's intelligent analysis of the emotional situation behind it impressed me, and set me thinking. I think I can understand Hayley's reluctance to sing without a mike. Given the "politics" that Peter explains so well, the one thing that was essential was that Hayley's performance sans mike was every bit as good as her performance with one. If that was not the case, if her performance was in any way inferior, it would simply add credence to the idea that Hayley can't sing without a mike. So the performance had to be perfect. This puts a lot of pressure on Hayley, and she was understandably very careful to make sure that it would all work out. Now I can claim some experience in this field. I regularly speak in church, either to read the Bible , lead worship or otherwise participate, and over many years I have done so, both with and without a microphone. And the two are very different. Without a mike, I need to project my voice more powerfully. I need to be aware that the microphone is linked to a loop system that can be picked up by the hearing aids of those who are hard of hearing. Without it, some will struggle so I need to project my voice and speak more clearly. So what of Hayley? There is not doubt in my mind that her voice has sufficient power to be heard in a relatively small (or even quite a large) auditorium without amplification. She has been gaining power for a while, and if you listen to something like the final verse of Hine, you realise she has no shortage of power. Personally, I found the sound of Hayley's voice at full power quite thrilling. But she always did get to me like no other singer ever has. The problem is though that she doesn't always sing at full power. Sometimes her voice is almost a whisper, as in Sonny and parts of Danny Boy, two songs that feature in her current live repertoire. And there may be others, without going through them all Hayley could not be sure how they would sound without a mike. If only one was hard to hear, the headlines would scream that "Hayley really can't sing without a microphone". The other issue is how would the extra effort of projecting her voice affect her over the course of a full concert. Would her voice tire. Or heaven forbid, would she risk permanent damage, something that is said to be risked by young female singers who try to use too much power too soon. So Hayley chose to take things in easy stages, and I have no doubt that it was the right decision. That performance of Barcarolle is stunning. It blew me away. I have already downloaded it and played it half a dozen times. And I wish I hd been there to see it.
