Hi Simba and everyone! I have a recording of the BBC Radio 4 vocal gymnastics interview that Hayley did following the Times 2007 article about her effect on Iggy pup (I try to keep everything, for ever!). She sang part of Shenandoah as a warm-up and reached D6 (~1180Hz) according to my PC's spectrum analyzer and an online tone generator, which sounded fine. She then did the vocal gymnastics but only reached D#6 (1216Hz), which sounded a bit strained... so I think it's safe to say that D6 is the highest that she could then have performed comfortably live on stage. It's interesting to see that her Shenandoah note sung live in the studio is higher than on the recording! EDIT I've just read back in the thread, why didn't I do this before? Because 7 or 8 years ago here: hwi.proboards.com/post/71671/thread I did exactly the same analysis and came to exactly the same conclusion! Cheers, Dave

Interesting indeed! I want to listen to the recording! However I'm sure the highest note she can hit or comfortably sing can't and shouldn't be a D#6....I can hit a C6 quite easily, and Im a guy, Now in the high notes league, hitting them is one, but exhibiting immense control in that range is what truly matters. I wonder if Hayley could take on this, youtu.be/3D4qYpqBJY0?t=4m11s From 4:11, be prepared for an out of the world experience, in my opinion one of the most difficult songs to sing, let alone live!

Thanks Simba and Dave, Yanni is something else and not by the pistols, such amazing control.. HERE is a NOTE to Hz table and wavelength in centimeters if you have a use for it. and Jenny A had already copped a high D in the second post in this thread in June 2008

Ah yes, indeed she did! Quanta Qualia. But, do you remember, there was some discussion somewhere (can't recall where) suggesting that that top note was in fact a flute! I don't know if that was ever resolved but either way, Hayley wins - she either can (could!) sing D6 beautifully, or her singing had the qualities of a flute because nobody was sure at the time which it was! Cheers, Dave PS my loudspeakers will do B0 (30 Hz) to D#10 (20 KHz) so I can hear it all! Although not quite, because I can only hear as high as D9 or E9 these days, about 10 KHz so I lose a whole octave of harmonics. Getting old...

I've heard that rumour too, but I'm not convinced. The really high notes could have been an oboe, not a flute, but they sound more like Hayley to me. Richard

It's probably been discussed before, and it's possible I even asked before, but what about Never Say Goodbye? That interlude part...when I first heard it all this year's ago I thought it was a violin but the more I listened it sounded like Hayley's voice. Is it Hayley singing? Because if so, that's pretty stinkin'high!

Oh devotedfan! You're in for a treat then, that bit is definitely Hayley, she's even sung it live! www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU2UN2Sbmr8 : D Insane right? One of my favourites this song...and that part always sends shivers down the spine :') I wonder if she could sing that portion now....and if she could I wonder how it'd sound.

Yes, I agree, I never for a moment doubted that it was Hayley. I used to have exceptional high frequency hearing up to about 20KHz as tested in a laboratory, although I suppose it isn't that good now. I can even remember walking into a lab with some friends and remarking that there was a 625 line TV or monitor in the room somewhere. I could here the whistle from the line transformer, and nobody else believed me until we found it.
Recognising that high note as Hayley's voice is about hearing the harmonics, and I can still hear enough of them (and have a good enough sound system) to be sure it is her.

Literally just watched that video and was like "oh, well there's my answer!" and came here to say that I found my answer hahaha Silly me, I even own the DVD ! I also never doubted that it was Hayley singing that high note in Quanta Qualia
