Yeah, but easily those performances could have been even better with the high note. But the thing that bothers me most is the Ave Maria (Caccini) live performances, where she doesn't take the high note, it's like one octave lower and omg, sounds wrong(I mean not musically, but the feeling I get) XD... I think we are going to have to resign ourselves to the fact that Hayley's voice is no longer high soprano and just enjoy her present range for all its beauty and richness. It would help if she didn't transpose her earlier work into lower keys because the memory is too strong for what once was. I wouldn't say she isn't a soprano 1 ("high" soprano) anymore.

Yeah, she is still a high soprano. She still can hit high notes, much higher than I can. I used to be able to hit higher notes, but I'm somewhat out of practice, and older. I find that I can sing along with Hayley better than I used to (depending on the song), but I'm actually better off singing with Enya or Orla Fallon. They sing soprano notes, but their voices are deeper. They sound much nicer than me, of course.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe her highest note was in Quanta Qualia. according to the songbook she gets up to a high D! very high indeed!! She's a true Soprano. I'm a Mezzo; I can only sing up to a high G when completely warmed up with out it sounding strained and Hayley sings a high D so clearly. It gives me shivers every time I hear that song. I thought a G is higher than a D?

That's such an old post! I had never noticed that! I meant high high D (G5 is lower than D6, naturally)! lol. Thanks Taylor. And also, update, I can sing up to B5 comfortably, which is higher than G5... Though, honestly, I need voice lessons. Does it annoy anyone else that they count octaves starting from "C"? Jenny♥

I know that there are different vocal sub-categories. Hayley, indeed seems like a high soprano and sounds lovely and superb in each register. I am wondering though if one could include her in the "Colortura" soprano range. I wonder if there is anyone who is expert enough to make that assessment on this forum. Just wondering. There is only one vocalist I know of ( key phrase- being "I know of") who can effectively and with facility, sing in an even higher register than Hayley. And that was her former CW colleague Meav. Mmmmmm....I wish the two of them could sing together again. That is kind of a dream of mine. I love them both so much.

I have heard of Mezzo sopranos who can hit high notes with crystalline clarity but have more power (tessatura?) in Mezzo-range... Honestly, It seems to me that Hayley is a mezzo with an amazing range... I would like to know more, though so keep posting info on this, please and thank you! Also, speaking of singer with a high range, search youtube for "STRATOSPHERIC SOPRANO" Jenny♥

Queen of the Night tulips are also very pretty. I can't help but imagine them when I hear the phrase.

Not sure if it's mentioned anywhere but has Hayley ever sung in the whistle register? For those not aware, the whistle register is the register of singing above the falsetto - it's what singers like Mariah Carey use to produce those "off-the-piano" notes. It's hard to tell with females singers who go very high what register they're singing in. I often can't determine whether Hayley is singing a note falsetto or in her regular chest register, so if she did use the whistle register I probably would not have noticed. However, if she is comfortable in that register she can almost definitely get higher than the aforementioned D#!

I don't think I have ever heard Hayley produce the rather unpleasant in my opinion whistle register notes that Mariah does. Even if Hayley can do it, I would rather she didn't if she sounds like Mariah. The lovely thing about Hayley's highest notes is that they are beautiful and pure, not screechy or warbly like so many sopranos. I don't think that there is any singer that hits those high notes as effortlessly or a beautifully as Hayley. I'm sure Hayley would not attempt a note if she didn't feel it sounded right. Even if she could reach it.

A huge part of what makes her voice so amazing is her phrasing. It's also something that has improved vastly over the years. Despite the reasons caused by age, I find her phrasing on Hayley Westenra and My Gift to You to be a tad unpleasant. But by Pure and later you can hear the words she sings much more clearly, which I think is a result of her conscious dedication to perfecting the already spectacular natural gifts she has. I bet she could do the same thing for the whistle register, but honestly she really doesn't need to, I was just curious as to whether she had before. -Rory

I heard somewhere that Hayley had problems with diction when she was young. But I agree, her phrasing has steadily improved throughout her career. These days it is absolutely superb. It was always the case with Hayley that she listened to her critics and worked hard to overcome her weaknesses. That is how she became the great singer that she is.
