Thanks for your detailed background update on Katherine, Richard. In a way that could 'clear the stage' for a straight run for Hayley if she decides to set her sights on the US market again. Having lost Katherine perhaps Universal will be more keen to put money and muscle behind Hayley? Peter S.

They do, by performing for us and if they are Hayley, often being available afterwards! Peter S.

Hello Peter and everybody! Please remember that this thread is for discussion about Faryl Smith. The link in my previous post was intended to divert any further discussion about Katherine Jenkins to her own sub-board, which is HERE. Many thanks, Richard

Having lost Katherine perhaps Universal will be more keen to put money and muscle behind Hayley? Peter S. Perhaps it is me, but my read of this rather obviously suggests that they are going to put considerable money and muscle behind Faryl - who is now after all the new faryl-haired kid on the block. I for one am going to be extremely interested as to how this pans out. The contract as reported is quite large - and the plans (pop style marketing for example) seem pretty grand as well. Many of the same things could have been said about Hayley in eariler times..... Jon

Whatever happened to Syco? For whatever the reason, it would appear that Simon Cowell has backed off away from signing some of the younger aspirants - most notably dropping Connie Talbot after a couple of months, and also Bianca Ryan from America. I am not going to speculate here except to say that there are often issues in these signings which are not common to the signing of other people - and Mr Cowell may actually have more of a heart than he lets on about. He took Andrew Johnston under his wing but Andrew's first album didn't do that well, maybe because as Dave explained it didn't qualify for the Classical Charts. I don't think UCJ will be making that mistake with Faryl.

Well, to further muddy the water, I saw Faryl perform last night, along with Katherine Jenkins, Blake and an American pianist called William Joseph, who is presumably one of Katherine's new label mates. It was an excellent concert, in front of I estimate about 3000 people. Half of the 12000 seater NIA was curtained off, and what was left was about half full, perhaps a bit more. Faryl first sang a duet with Katherine, Silent Night, then gave us a little, and I thought rather nervous talk about her week, including performing in the Albert Hall with Katherine and signing her record contract ( and Kettering Town football club winning through to the third round of the FA Cup). And finally, as she put it, performing in front of a lovely audience. She said it was the best week of her life! She then sanf Amazing Grace solo. She is such a tiny lttle girl, looking only about half as tall as Katherine (and Katherine is quite small herself, but was wearing heels, unlike Faryl), but WOW, WHAT A VOICE! Absolutely amazing. Give her a few years and she will be every bit as fine a singer as Katherine I think. There was a signing afterwards, but I kept back from it, since I didn't want to risk infecting any of the singers with my cold. I didn't have anything to sign anyway, since the programmes, thoug big and clossy and well produced, cost £10! Faryl was there, with Blake and William, but not Katherine. It was basically a huddle, not well organised as Hayley's signings usually are, and I can't imagine Hayley not being there if she had been performing instead of Katherine. Katherine said that she was going to be mentoring Faryl, and considered it a privilege to be doing so.

Hi Martindn
I am already on the record as liking Faryl to some extent - but even so I had to cringe when one of the judges on BGT mentioned that it was such a big voice coming from such a little person. Such thing are overpowering at the time, but illusory over time because in all cases, the girl will grow faster than the voice. Even if she improves vocally a great deal, this effect will still not be a big deal three or four years from now.
I am frankly wondering what a teenager can sing to be worth the kind of contract she has been offered - but for the moment I will put my cynisicm in my pocket.....and merely wish her well

Well, Jon, it is all the usual stuff isn't it? Even Hayley did it. There will always be a market for a cute child star, and the record compnies know it. Especially if they have had as much TV exposure as Faryl. But that does not do them justice in my opinion. I perhaps am unusual in that what matters to me is the quality of the singing. Faryl, I'm convinced, has it, and will develop into a fine singer. Those who love good singing will enjoy her music for many years to come. I think Hayley's career, to some extent illustrates the "child star" effect Why has Pure outsold all her other albums? She is a much better singer, with much more maturity and experience now than she was at 15. Those who have seen her recently know that is true. Yet Pure is still her best selling album. If she re-recorded it nowm, she would do a much better job. But would it sell as well? I wonder if Faryl will have the same sort of experience. I hope not, I live in hope that people who buy records do so because they like the music, and that they appreciate fine singing when they hear it., Not because they think the singer is cute. To do that insults the artist in my opinion.

The child star phenomenon may indeed be a part of what is behind the signing of Faryl - but if it had much to do with Hayley's success I dont see it. There were only a couple of months difference between her age on Pure and Josh Stone or Britney when they released their first albums.... Jon

With Faryl's album out on March 2nd, she'll need to promote it by doing a guest appearance on someone else's tour. Now, let me see, who do we know on tour in March ?!
