Hi Grant/Peter Regarding childhood toys which are still in one's possession (this might justify a new thread), I still have my treasured train set collection which is now almost 50yrs old.
It is the Hornby Dublo (3 rail) set including the Duchess of Montrose engine, tender, Royal Mail coach and several passenger coaches. Also a 0-6-2 goods tank engine with trucks. Most are still stored in original boxes.
Interestingly, prices for this version are not particularly high on ebay (not that I would consider selling).

Fortunately i knew a boy who did--and we became friends BEFORE I knew he had a train set!--and I recall the Montrose and the tank engine. I think his coaches were the original LMS colours (?Grant) chocolate and cream, and plain maroon, being the local service. He seemed to prefer goods trains and siding manipulations to running expresses. Was quite good with his hands and papiere masché. His never went mouldy, mine always did!. He was well into in terms of signal and point co-ordination, home and distant signals, even to the point of wiring the traffic and street lights, as well as inside the houses which, as he got older--we had drifted apart as I followed school newspaper production and general printing--he 'computerised' so bedroom lights and hall lights would come on in sequence etc.! What fascinated me was that a college friend (who had likewise been enthused by trains as a child) but who had cleared the area in his bedroom of his train layout to make room for his various tape-recorder decks and gramophone tables, was thinking of setting it all up again in his current home. Finding I was fascinated he replied, 'Oh well, if your interested perhaps we could work together. It will make it worth your while coming over... for a couple of months at a time! The trouble is, I'm not keen on Canadian winters, which is when he would be concentrating on it. Peter S.

Martin Hi Martin My first Hornby Dublo set was second hand from a cousin and comprised the 0-6-2T (but LNER not BR!) with three tin plate wagons. "Duchess of Montrose" was the first engine I bought with my own pocket money in the mid fifties. It cost £4 2s 6d!! Grant

The rocking horse was a new present which I used to ride up and down the pavement outside my house (in those days it was quite safe to do so). I am trying to get these photos enlarged as some of the elder members of the Forum are having dificulty seeing them (only joking). Best wishes Martin

I think the DH Comet had a much sleeker fuselage and engines as it was designed as a racer. My guess would be a military prop. in Dinkey's standard silver, but as it's being held upside down it's difficult to tell! Grant

Hi Lads, As kids we had planes with JETEX Engines, they were jet engines with little round solid fuel tablets that were ignited by fusewire, The engines were so powerful they would fly on their own without a model plane attached, they were a bit hard to find afterwards though, lost mine in the grass somewhere, I think they were banned in the end because they were a little teeny weeny bit dangerous, but thats why we liked them.
