I have heard Hayley and Sophie perform live and they do sound incredibly alike .... Ironically, sounding like Hayley may not help Sophie establish herself as a singer. She needs to set herself apart so as to offer something distinctive and fresh. Soundalike younger siblings rarely step out of the older ones' shadow. Look at Paul McCartney's brother Mike (who even changed his last name to McGear) or John Travolta's brother. I think she needs to go the way of Ashlee Simpson who realised early on there was no future in sounding like her big sis Jessica.

The only time Sophie has provided backing (or duetting) vocals on a CD was on the two tracks on MGTY. 'Across the Universe of Time' and 'Mummers Dance' is Hayley. Thanks for clearing that up, Roger. Sophie did very well on backing Hayley during the PBS show "Live in New Zealand" so I had wrongly assumed that she was also the one singing along on the CD track "Across the Universe of Time".

Hi everyone, The only time Sophie has provided backing (or duetting) vocals on a CD was on the two tracks on MGTY. 'Across the Universe of Time' and 'Mummers Dance' is Hayley. I have heard Hayley and Sophie perform live and they do sound incredibly alike so I can fully understand why Ed reached his conclusion. Roger Absolutely right, Roger. Remember that sequence in 'Hayley Westenra Live In New Zealand'. I can't now remember the song but the technique was stunningly effective. Sophie came on at a first (arguably second level as it was so high) cat walk singing and at first you tnought it was Hayley. Then she descended the steps and in exact following sequence, Hayley came on, desended to full stage level and then her sister joined her. It is awhile since i played that DVD so forgive me if the sequence is not specifically accurate but the effect was terrific and fully supports Roger's observation. Sorry, my Pizza's just pinged 'I'm ready for eating' otherwise I would double check before posting! Peter S.

From what secondhand opinion I have read--and Belinda is perhaps the greatest authority available to us--Sophie has different musical leanings to Hayley. If that is the case then in fact they could complement one another to each other's advantage. Peter S.

I stand corrected. My assumption that it was Sophie backing Hayley up on the album cut was further reinforced by a post to Sophie's own forum dated 14 Dec 05.

Hi milewalker Jon, Thank you for your input re Hayley reviews. There can never be an objective review by anyone. Tastes differ too much and moods vary as well. But you are entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. Therefore I do not take you or your friends opinion too seriously. I know who I rather listen to and that's what counts to me...Hayley Westenra time and time again! Love, Marianne

Hi Peter, In a word, YES! He also performed with Hayley and Sophie during the Pure tour in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the UK in 2004. He has a fine voice and I have heard recently that he is a very good guitarist. Belinda, Thomas and Rodders saw him busking in Christchurch just a few weeks ago, I believe. Roger No waaayyy!!! He is a busker as well?! <shaking head here> What next?! That family is just amazing. Peter PS: Now the next question that springs to mind is "Just how good of a chess player is Sophie?" i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Not that it matters much (and this is likely never to be answered) but I do wonder if she would be capable of kicking my hind end fair and square in a game (I play every day at lunch with my biz partner which is why I muse). She is probably quite good at that too.

Hi Peter, I am not sure whether you knew that Sophie plays chess. If it was merely a passing thought, the answer will astound you. A few years ago, Sophie was the national junior chess champion of New Zealand! Check mate! Roger

Just as well Gerald and Jill stopped at Isaac. I don't think the world could cope witha fourth, or sixth Westenra, dependent upon how you look at it! Peter S.

A few years ago, Sophie was the national junior chess champion of New Zealand! Check mate! Roger Hi Roger, Thats most impressive! I think I'll stop asking more questions now! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Its in my nature - can't help it though! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifThe only thing that is changed is that I am now even more curious how well I'd do in a game against her! Note - you said she was the junior champ... this means that a relative senior such as myself still might have a chance to trounce her Okay I can't help myself - Now my only question is why the Westenra's stopped? The only thing I can figure is that the Westenra kids are a handful! <intelligent kids = more of a handful> i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifGosh the Westenra's must be very proud of their kids. What a brood! all the best, Peter

It's great that Sophie excels at chess. Female chess players at one time were extremely rare, but that's all changing now, thanks, in part, to promotional strategies like Chess for Girls.

Roger That is absolutely correct, Roger. Isaac has got a great voice but his voice is different to Hayley's. That would be something I'd like to see and hear, Hayley, Sophie and Isaac singing together. He's indeed a very good guitar player but, like Gerald mentioned, at the moment he prefers to practice with his electric guitar instead of busking. Thomas
