Hi everybody.
Last night I hinted that a treat was in store because I had just been told that Hayley would visit the school today to talk to our pupils in Year 4, who will be setting up an organic vegetable patch in the school environmental area with the help and support of Hayley.
In such a busy week for Hayley, we were surprised and delighted that she made time to visit the school for the third time since November 2005. Roger was able to attend at short notice to represent HWI. I had to wear two hats; Headteacher and photographer but between Jamie, our Facilities Manager, and I we managed to get some great photos of the event which will follow shortly.
As part of Hayley's new role as a Matron of WEN, she is very keen to be involved in an organic plot. On Tuesday she visited an organic allotment in East London before coming to Alfred Salter to help us set up an organic plot on her behalf. Hayley said she sees this as a long term project and she will be coming back whenever she can to see how things are progressing.
Hayley arrived at 11.45 and visited the plot before going to talk to pupils. she had prepared some questions and explained what we needed to do to establish an organic plot. Hayley engaged the pupils in discussion about what vegetables and fruit they wanted to grow and talked to them about the benefits of organic food.
I had not expected Hayley to sing but Kathryn asked her if she would and she agreed, singing two verses of Shenandoah. We all then went to the plot where Hayley, with the help of some very willing volunteers started to dig the plot over. As it was lunchtime and the environmental area lies adjacent to the playground, we were soon joined by what seemed to be half of the school! Hayley was great with the kids as always and survived the walk from the plot back to the school building. She signed copies of Treasure for 12 pupils who had been out to get it this week before retiring to a small buffet with Kathryn, Roger and I. Pupils presented Kathryn and Hayley with an orchid before they left after 1.00pm.
Thank you Hayley for your ongoing commitment to the school . Your involvement makes the lives of so many young people so much richer.
Now for some photos........
