I'm incredulous that someone as unassuming and self-effacing as Hayley would sing "I Feel Pretty" -- the one song that always struck me as over-the-top vain. It's called acting, Steve! Also, I strongly suspect in this case, having fun! Cheers, Dave Quite right Dave, Hayley should really go out on a limb and have fun enjoying singing this piece... Go Hayley!!! Peter, the reason I consider that song vain is that it clearly fixates on appearances: See the pretty girl in that mirror there: Who can that attractive girl be? Such a pretty face, Such a pretty dress, Such a pretty smile, Such a pretty me! ... Yeah, it's a fun, sprightly confection that Hayley will sing to the hilt, and that's fine by me. I just hope it doesn't re-introduce image woes among susceptible young women who may not feel so pretty and are then driven to look their best at all costs. The culture is cruel sometimes, even when it doesn't intend to be.

Surely Steve, every girl feels pretty when she's in love and found her man? Especially when she knows her man loves her just as much!
And 'pretty me', is that not the whole girl, spiritual as well as physical? Peter S.

Peter, Interesting that you used "girl" and her "man" -- not exactly an equal relationship when put in those terms. Could this be an unconscious acknowledgement that females' obsession with looks is one of the factors retarding equality between the sexes? Ah, but I drift off-topic, sorry.

For heaven's sake!! Let's just enjoy the song and not delve too deeply into it's meaning. We're talking about a musical story here.
Believe me, any girl hearing Hayley sing this will know that SHE TOO can "feel pretty". Hayley will make sure of that!!
Best wishes Grant

Best wishes Grant Hi Grant, I don't think too many of us are "steamed up"!!! Well not as much as the locomotives you mentioned in the "What Is Your Occupation?" thread... I enjoyed reading your railway service account. Very entertaining indeed! Back on track now... Will the Great Western Railway locomotive take us back to 'West Side Story'? From cast iron, back to the stage cast... i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Andrew

My dear departed mother used to talk about her days at work with "the girls" and sometimes, her evenings out with them too. At the time they were all in their 30s and 40s! It is not at all uncommon in the UK to refer to women as 'girls' - especially among women... and in the example I gave, it meant simply this: a group of female friends. The same kind of thing is done among men to a certain extent, in which case the equivalent phrase in the UK would be "a day (or night out) with the lads". So girl and woman are not uncommonly used interchangeably in the UK: things may be different in other Countries. I hope that clarifies... and noting the involvement of Connie Fisher, 'Melanie Marshall and girls' (singing America) I am sure the girls had a lot of fun doing this. I bet Vittorio and the rest of the lads had a lot of fun doing it too! Cheers, Dave

Hi all,
I'm looking forward to this CD as well. I'm not familiar with the West Side Story story, but I've heard a few of these songs through their foray into popular culture.
Let's hope the publicity for the CD results in another great opportunity for Hayley to visit the States.

Maedchen are always female children !! Boys are always children... when grown up they are called Maenner (men). Junge/Jungs are young boys. Confused ?? I think I am as well !! Love, Marianne
