I refer to the final paragraph of an article in today's Music Week (trade) magazine in the UK posted HERE but Dave. I have reproduced the relevant detail below: We first learned about this from Steve Abbott when we saw him at the HemiHelp conert in Cadogan Hall on 24th February. An album to celebrate the 50th anniversary of West Side Story is scheduled to be recorded some time in June. This is why Hayley's possible appearance at Hampton Court on 23rd will not now go ahead, and is partly the reason why I suspect she will not be involved in the additional concerts of the CW tour. Clearly, West Side Story also requires a male lead but, as he has not been named in the article, I am not at liberty to disclose his identity at the moment. No guesses please, but if the name should appear in some future article, I will be able to confirm it (or deny it, as the case may be!). This album will not be a part of Hayley's five-album contract and so may be considered as an extra one! We will bring you further news as soon as we receive clearance to do so. Roger

I'm sorry if I appear to be a complete ignorant, but I absolutely don't know West Side Story. Is this some sort of musical?

Hello Stephany... Here is West Side Story for beginners! It goes back a long way but it (and the songs in it!) is still very popular among the older generations - like me Cheers, Dave

Dave, thanks a lot for the link.
I didn't realize how big this was. I'll probably take a closer look at the older version of West Side Story to see how the music sounds.
If it turns out to be true, I can already say that I'm extremely impressed by Hayley's choices. Her career is filled with diversity : personal albums, soundtracks, Celtic Woman...and now this. Thumbs up!

Without doubt West Side Story was Leonard Berstein's greatest musical score, originally for the stage and then followed by a very successful film. The story is based on Romeo and Juliet.
Hayley's voice is ideal for the part of Maria and I look forward to hearing her sing classics such as "Tonight" and "I Feel Pretty".

I'm very curious about this, now. I'll probably go in a store tomorrow to purchase the DVD or soundtrack. Or maybe I'll just wait to discover the songs with Hayley's version. I'm not too fond of comparing.

Roger, Thanks for putting this on here! I've heard some of the songs from West Side Story, but not all of them, so I can't wait to hear them by Hayley!

The other interesting fact about West Side Story is that Leonard Berstein re-recorded the entire score in 1985 for a TV documentary. It starred Kiri Te Kanawa as Maria!
What a coincidence!

West Side Story is a truly great musical and singularly American, which makes it a particularly significant coup for Hayley. I think this is fantastic news. Could the stage performance be next?

( call me a simpleton, I don't mind ) I would wait for the Hayley album, Stephany. But you may be able to hire a DVD for the time being. Do you have a Video store close to you ?? Love, Marianne

...And when you hear it, Stephany, I bet you will recognise several of the songs. You just may not realise where they came from but they are very well known.

I bought the DVD and watched the movie. I loved it! And you were right, Roger, I had heard some of the songs before. I simply had no idea they came from West Side Story. Funnily enough, a recover of "Somewhere" was in the first CW show.

In 1962 I was employed part-time as an usher at a San Francisco movie theatre in the Mission District (I was attending High School at the time). West Side Story, starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblin and Rita Moreno played for three weeks. I saw the movie at least 20 times, at the end of which I knew the dialogue, the choreography, and every song in it. I still have the 33-1/3 rpm LP record of the soundtrack. The music is wonderful as all who know it agree but will sound much more so when Hayley sings it.
