Songs that you would like Hayley to sing sometime

"You Raise Me Up" would be a great showcase song for Hayley to cover, however, I have yet to encounter a version that's better than the original from Secret Garden. Having said that, I'm confident Hayley can bring the song to life.

Even though Josh Groban's version is average at best, unfortunately, the song seems to be associated with him now. I agree with Steve, Becky's version is probably the best remake of the song so far.

Another song I would like Hayley to sing is an acoustic version of "Adagio", previously performed by Lara Fabian on World Music Awards 2001.

Hayley would do just fine with the song, but why do something a lot of other folks have covered? Actually, the ballad "As Time Goes By" would sound pretty good in her voice, a nice change from the gravelly vocals of Jimmy Durante (may he rest in peace).

I agree that Hayley singing, "You Raise Me Up," would be beautiful but like others have stated, it would seem she was jumping on the popular bandwagon... everyone sings that song now.

And no matter how good they are, (just listen to Becky's stellar version) people always think "You Raise Me Up" and Josh Groban.

So while recording it at this stage would probably not be wise, singing it on her concerts would be nice.

I think you are right, it would be a great song to hear live! I would like Hayley to sing Fields of Barley, Its one of my favorite songs by Amy Nuttall, I think it would go well on the next Decca release.

While looking for the right board and thread on which to place the thought that has just come to me, I notice the following on this thread:

Coincidentally, I find these comments posted around March 5 2006, which is when my suggestion DIDn’t come to me!

What did, was an arrangement of a sea shanty which Classicfm played at that time and I was enchanted by it so, after some research, I tracked down a recording of it and it has only arrived today. In fact it is a CD of songs I would not normally order but for this particular song, which still pleases me, now that i have just played it.

Having done a site search and not been able to find previous reference to Grainger and seeing these two entries seemingly exhoing a seriously difficult problem I make this suggestion.

Grainger one generally (I do) thinks as primarily male voices or choirs in scoring. This song, Shallow Brown has a fascinating background. Its orchestration is designed to depict a lone girl on the end of a quay singing about her faithless one putting to sea and is intended to convey the wafting of the voice on the wind.

The recording I have is wrongly scored for Hayley, in my view. It’s a contralto voice but I see no reason why it shouldn’t be transposed and if you think of the scene description above it seems an ideal Hayley scenario. In this recording (which is the Monteverdi Choir and the English Country Gardiner Orchestra), I think the balance of solo voice with choir wrong, the choir effect and orchestral strings come over too strongly. But that is both a matter of scoring and sound mixing in the studio. In any case, I am envisaging that Hayley, looking at the score would re-orchestrate it (if she were allowed to do so).

Anyway, who knows Grainger’s work better than I (or at all, which would be better than I!) and could single out other scorings for female voice as opposed to my perception of his work being mainly male voice or choral?

On similar thinking there is of course the work of Norman Foster. Haven’t heard his work for a long time either!

Having selected this thread to raise my suggestion, I am actually thinking of recording options for her as that is generally perceived the main difficulty for her selection. Using songs made 'popuar' by other voices surely isn't a problem when she is singing in concert?

Now there's a challenge for Hayley - to sing in Cornish! I suppose there may be people here who are unaware of the Cornish language. It is one of the six Celtic languages which is spoken (rarely these days) in Cornwall, the most south-westerly county of England.

Catlin did an absolutely beautiful job on the song, "Colors of the Wind" and I think it would be great for Hayley as well!

She should also try, "One Hope." Its from the movie 'A Walk to Remember' and was sung by Mandy Moore in the play scene. I don't think any classical artist as ever covered it before and I think a Hayley take is just what the song needs!

Two other good ones are "Someone like you" (Sissel) and "Tell me on a Sunday." (From 'Song and Dance' I believe.)

Oh one more... "Best Days" the song that was on Amy Nuttal's CD. It's gorgeous, but IMO Amy doesn't really do justice to it! It really needs Hayley to put it up there!

I'd love to hear Hayley sing something to the tune of 'Sheep May Safely Graze.' I think it has lyrics, but I haven't been able to find them online. However, the melody is wonderful, and would make a beautiful addition to a future album.
