What about "Jamaica Farewell"? martindn: I'm interested. What's your definition of a folk singer? Edit by Joe...removed a song title referencing an alcoholic beverage. Interesting question. I mostly think of traditional songs that have been collected by people from various parts of the world. So I suppose it overlaps a bit with "World Music". But I mostly think of British folk, English, Welsh Irish and Scottish traditional songs as performed in folk clubs and the like all over Britain. And also I think in the United States. So Folk includes peole like Fairport Convention, Pentangle, John Redbourn and Bert Jansch, Martin Carthy, even popular ones like Bob Dylan and the Clancy Brothers. And people wrting new songs too, many of which make social comment on their time. I suppose I regard Siobhan Owen as a folk singer too, although she performs other stuff too, so she is perhaps crosssover rather than a folk specialist. Oh, and if you like songs about booze, you should not forget the Dubliners! Martin D

The Dubliners have great voices. Orla Fallon performed with them once.

Think it might be interesting to hear Hayley sing some of the Andrew Lloyd Webber songs, as from Cats, Phantom Of The Opera, etc. Webber's got a lot of good tunes, and I'm not sure I've ever heard Hayley sing any of them... Some of the songs from Lerner & Loewe's Camelot would be pretty awesome, too, thinking about it. But then I always like the idea of Hayley doing Operetta

Hi ! Guys ! ......... just saw this Topic & would REALLY really wanna drop in my tiny little two cents . I know that Hayley has recorded a song from the Movie "Spirited Away" & that song is included in the Album "HSJS 2" . THIS got me into thinking .............. well, actually , a lot of Movie Theme Songs used in the movies produced & directed by the GREAT , GREAT , Living Legend , the Respected , the For-EVER-Loved Japanese animation Master Miyazaki San are , Indeed , Super-Gorgeous . Just really pleasant & nice to listen to. For Hayley to have just done 1 song , or be permitted to perform just 1 song out of this INSANE-ly BEAUTIFUL & Successful franchise .......... is , in my humble opinion , just flat out RIDICULOUS . Master Miyazaki San has gotten a very , very long career in Japanese Animation Creation & in fact , there have been SOOOOOOoooo many amazing songs coming out from his Movies , which basically are the works of the Gibi Studio in Japan. For Hayley to perform , or to say that , she shall record a CD called <Hayley sings Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber> would have sound a little TOO Generic or even Boring . HOWEVER , if ever we were to have something very Refreshing like a CD titled <Hayley sings Miyazaki Hayao's Music World> , THIS might basically just "Blow Everybody Away" & help Hayley "Lift her already successful career to new heights" . Best Regards Chungie

Hi Chungie,
Found your "two cents" to be very interesting. As is obvious, it has caught my attention. (Just went back and read your last "Breaking the States" offering.) You have very nicely made your case for Master Miyazaki San. Is there any song in particular on YouTube that you would suggest as a good introduction to his music?
Kindest regards, BobS

Hi Chungie,
Have just listened to a little Miyazaki music at random on YouTube. Was expecting to hear something similar to Morricone. It is a big stretch for me to associate Hayley with anything such as I have just heard. A matter of taste, I guess.
Best regards, BobS

Good call, Morwen! Can't go wrong with The Desert Song. Love just about everything in that @elliot: Here's a thread where I did My Little Castagnette. hwi.proboards.com/index.cgi?actio....ad=6408&page=1 I just posted a link to another version. Tell me what you think of my singing and acting! I also recorded The Song of The Brass Key. Yep, I love the role of Clementina. I'd actually like to play her. Fixed link...Joe

Elliot, you do know that Hayley has recorded several ALW songs in the past? On her debut album in NZ, though. Don't tell me you don't have that one! It would be nice to hear her sing them with her more mature voice, but I think I'm with Chungie a bit on this one. Boorringg, over-done, same-old, same-old, been there, done that, etc. LOL If she does any ALW songs, I want him to write that song he said he'd like to do years ago. I want NEW stuff, mostly. New songs written by Hayley, preferrably, though. New, different, and unique is pretty much what pleases me these days. If it's not new, then it has to be perfection. That's one of the reasons I am a such a big fan of Hayley.

That would be the 'only ever released in NZ and totally impossible to get elsewhere without mortgaging your house' debut, yes? Oddly enough, I am lacking that one. I know you believe in Hayley's amazing songwriting talent, and you know I am yet to be convinced. I will definitely agree that it would be great to hear her perform some new songs that were especially written for her, though. Songs that will push her to the same kind of impossible heights as Dark Waltz (Which I do not truly believe that anyone else can actually sing). Maybe Ennio will do that, as he does seem to enjoy working with her

BobS ! thanks for your reply ! at this moment , off the top of my head , I guess I can think of THESE : 1.) "Always with me" from <Spirited Away> ........ well , Hayley has ALREADY recorded that for HSJS 2 . 2.) "Nobody Knows Your Heart" from <Princess Mononoke> .......... Ummmm ........ very Sadly , "Popera" soprano "Sasha Lazard" has already "Owned" the English Version of that AMAZINGly Beautiful song , but Hayley's cover , if ever there were to be 1 , would probably with 95% possibility , FAR BETTER than Sasha's Version . 3.) "Arrietty's Song" (English Version) from <The Secret World of Arrietty> 4.) "Theru's song" (English Version) from <Tales from Earth-Sea> . The Original Japanese Version was actually done by soprano Aoi Teshima . 5.) "Theme Song" from <From Up On Poppy Hill> , original Japanese Version , ALSO performed by Aoi Teshima. 6.) "Theme Song" from <The Castle on the Sky> . 7.) "Path of Wind" from <My Neighbor ToToro> . .................... (& many many Others) ............... & Most Importantly , actually , my P.O.V. is that a lot of Master Miyazaki San's Movies are about "Celebrating the Courage of Womanhood , Stories of Coming-of-Age , Environmental Protection , Remembrance to the Sorrows of a lost Childhood , Peace , Unity & Reconciliation , Recovery from Atrocities of the Past , Honoring The Survivors' Spirits , Compassion towards small , abandoned , abused animals & the sense of Utmost Respect for the Love and Beauty of Mother Nature" etc. etc. ALMOST everything that can be considered SOOOOOOoooooo "Hayley-ish" , I dare say , could be found in the World of Miyazaki San's Art Creation . Well , in this Aspect , I guess you'd get my point , right ? Best Regards Chungie

Hello Chungie,
Thank you ever so much for your suggested list of Miyazaki music to sample. I have just listened to each one, all beautiful. What a difference from what I happened to find last night! I evidently must have been in the wrong neighborhood. ("Really Big Clock", Pokemon music, etc.) I agree with you 100% that an album for Hayley of his work, including a few new creations especially for her, ought to be a blockbuster! Thanks for the introduction to him.
Kindest regards, BobS

It's really not that expensive. You can get it here for $15. It's where I got mine! It is a nice album, especially for being her first released. -Taylor i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

Yeah, Elliot, where've you been? LOL We're not talking about the rare, impossible to find, Walking in the Air. We're talking about the self-titled album Hayley Westenra, which was released in NZ and Australia (as was My Gift to You). It is available from Amazon UK, and most likely the NZ music sites, too.
The album has Memory, Love Changes Everything, and something else too that I can't remember. Maybe. There's also some too-fast versions of Pie Jesu and Schubert's Ave Maria, as well as the Bach/Gounod version. Walking in the Air is also on it. My favorite song on it is Bright Eyes. Some exquisitely perfect, gorgeous notes can be heard in this song. Some of the most beautiful sounds she's ever made. I need to listen to it again.
