Hi Joanne, Sorry but I missed your previous post! HWI videos on the original HWI website (now at archive.hayley-westenra-international.com ) were always designed not to be downloadable and when I took over maintaining the (original) site, I just carried on that tradition. They all play in a box inside an HWI web page, so to view them, you may need to install Windows Media Player for Mac (though I've never tried it as I have a PC). Videos that I post here in the forum are designed to be downloaded - which in Firefox you do by a right-click and "Save Link As", like the new Classical BRITs video www.hwi.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Media&thread=5408&page=11#116694 that I recently posted. When you have saved it to your computer, that's when you may (or may not) need to have VLC Player for Mac OS.X to play it. Oh! I see. Haha I feel kind of dumb now The Classical Brits video plays fine on my Mac with VLC. Your browser security settings are another possible reason you can't play or see videos on the HWI website, they may block the embedded "ActiveX controls", which allow the embedded video player to work properly. Cheers, Dave Funny thing, I didn't change any settings since I last posted, but now all the videos work! The most straightforward approach would be to download a plugin for Firefox called Video Download Helper. Let me know if that works for you. Bill Wow. That's pretty darn cool! It works great, thanks! There is a way to do the same with Safari using the "activity window" but sometimes it is hard to figure out which of the many items in the activity list is the file you are trying to download. I hadn't heard of that before today! But I just read an article extolling the wonders of the "activity window" and it sounds really powerful. I tried it on the same page you provided, but there was no file ending with .wmv or any video extension. They were mostly .jpg. Weird. Haha. Thank you so much, Dave and Bill!! cheers, Joanne

Yeah. But I want to see it on my own TV, too. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifI'm just afraid I'll be at work when it's on during the day. I wish I could watch it when it's aired, not just play it back for myself. But that's better than nothing. I'm going to record it either way. Every time Hayley is on US TV, I'm going to record it and keep it forever! I just wish I could somehow just have Hayley's performances, and not have to keep the rest of whatever the show she's on. I don't mean the RWC, since I imagine she'll only be singing at the beginning. I'm referring more to a possible GMA performance. You know how long GMA lasts! Their musical guests often perform near the end, but sometimes they perform earlier on in the show, too, and of course it's always spread out so you have to watch/record the whole thing!

Hi Libby,
What you need is some video editing software. That way you can cut out the bits of the programmes that you want to keep. That's what Dave and the rest of us who post videos do.
The problem is that vieo editing is a bit of a black art. There are many products available that will do the job, some are even free, but they are all different and some have a very steep learning curve before you can produce useful results. I guess everybody here who does it has their own favourites, and I can't pretend to have tried more than a few of them.
Itis likely anyway that someone on HWI will record and suitably trim any such appearances anyway, so why not just dowload those from YouTube or wherever?

I have no idea how to download something from Youtube. Could I download anything there, and put it on DVD to watch on my TV? Is that even legal? I'm still going to record the program on TV, no matter what. Like, if she's on GMA, I want to hear everytime they mention that she's coming up, maybe showing her in the studio! That's what they usually do!

Hi Libby,
There are lots of programs available for free that you can use to download stuff from YouTube.
DVDVideoSoft Free Studio is one that is controllable, and is a whole suite of programs for different puposes.
These days I use Freecorder4, which might be a bit intrusive since it records every video that you ever play, and gives you the option to save it afterwards. There is a nice toolbar for your browser too that gives you functions like audio recording.
There are many other programs that you can use to burn CDs and DVDs. Legality is complicated, but in general you should be OK provided that the recordings are for your own use. YouTube anyway is a public medium, so since anything there is freely available to anyone, most people will not object to your using it provided you do not attempt to profit from it.
I have a huge collection of Hayley videos, since whatever I see I record and save. I do the same with any photos I like.
After all, stuff sometimes appears briefly then disappears, so you sometimes need to be quick.

Well, maybe I'll consider that for the future. Right now I'll just have to settle with my own DVD recording, and hopefully a video uploaded to youtube by another HWI member.

Hi Martin/Libby
About downloading YouTube videos.I use Firefox and "DownloadHelper". I bought a Cyclone Media Player +2 for about £29. Copy your videofiles to an SD card, USB stick or hard drive. You just plug it into a TV (also has a High Definition output) and will play back any format you throw at it i.e. flv, mp4, avi, divx, wmv etc etc etc. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to all those, esp Dave, who provide us with all those amazing videos.
Cheers
Tony

Hi everyone,
In view of the current discussion that was in the Rugby World Cup 2011 thread, I've resurrected and renamed this thread so we can discuss in one place any problems with videos (playing, making or acquiring). I've also moved the most relevant posts from there to here.
Feel free to continue that discussion here, or to raise any other matters about videos, or audio-only recordings.
Dave
