This video won't play on Firefox for me. Sorry, but I had to post that here. If you want it can be moved to Tech. Support You mean this one: Never Saw Blue but it plays fine in my Firefox so unless someone else can help, I guess we're stuck. Is yours the latest and up to date? Mine is Firefox 2.0.0.11: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071127 Firefox/2.0.0.11 Dave

Hi Dave, As you know I had a similar problem but have fixed it ( 90 %+ anyway) now I have had time at the weekend to adjust my computer settings. My media player was defaulting to 'Realtime', I changed it back to Internet Explorer, and not only did it work but the whole 'set up' was different. The 'large TV type cabinet' I was talking about must have been a 'Realtime' display frame. I thought it was a HWI frame but am back to a normal set up now thank goodness . ( You must have wondered what an earth I was talking about !!!) I did still have a couple of non starters, but I will have another go before I worry you. Thank you for the advice. I can now see what you mean re better quality on HWI v's YOUTUBE. Thanks again. Graham

Fortunately I cannot recall any such problems viewing the videos from this site. Of course having said this, I am currently preparing to switch to a Vista PC in the upcoming weeks, so we shall see Jon

I have no clue what Firefox I have, but it doesn't say on my computer. If it works for everyone else, I'm fine. It's just a comp. problem. Just wanted to make sure that the video is OK

Hi Graham,
I saw your message but I'm involved in other things at the moment and I'll deal with this as soon as I can.
This Tech Support board is certainly the best place for posting such queries as it's easy to pick them up at a later date.

Five News - Hayley Interview (640x360 Xvid .avi - .mp3 audio - 1.1mbps 30 MB widescreen)
Five News - Hayley Interview (640x360 Xvid .avi - .mp3 audio - 564kbps 16 MB widescreen)
I'm hoping I've now found a format that everyone can play or download, Mac people included and more importantly, that works at a good quality and always in the correct aspect ratio (which was a problem previously). Please let me know anyone who has problems, what they are and with what programs.
Hello everyone, I've returned to this thread because I've recently been looking for a video format that everyone can play, not just Windows users. I did try posting videos in two formats recently, DivX/XVID .avi files with mp3 sound, and of course Windows Media Video. Apparently, in 2007, 91% of computers had a Microsoft Windows operating system and 9% used another, such as Mac or Linux - though the actual percentages are highly debatable but we don't want to debate them here. We've normally used Windows Media because obviously, that suits the vast majority of members and guests... but it would be nice to cater for everyone else too, if possible... without having to double the number of videos produced, which can be very time consuming and is wasteful of Internet bandwidth. So yesterday, after doing some tests on my Windows XP system, I decided to post the videos in the Channel Five News thread using only XVID/DivX and with mp3 sound. This format should be playable by all operating systems, as far as I know... but some members have had problems. Even in one case with the aspect ratio, which surprises me as I did extensive tests on that with Windows Media Player, PowerDVD and VLC Media player, all of which displayed the videos correctly on my PC, in widescreen format. I'd like to sort all this out if possible, it will be beneficial in the long run if we can. So here is a place to post your problems with these particular videos and hopefully, get some advice on how to fix them. Don't forget to mention your operating system and which media player(s) has the problem. If the above videos play correctly on your computer, in widescreen format and without having to tweak the aspect ratio in, say, VLC Media Player, there is no need to post here at all, I will assume that everyone who does not post can play them correctly (but feel free to assist others!). The videos are hosted at HWI so they should download OK (if not, use a download manager, e.g. use Firefox 3). Cheers, Dave PS Please don't discuss the content of this video in this thread!

Hello Dave! I'm using Windows XP, Internet Explorer 7 and Media Player 9. Both Five News videos played perfectly with the correct aspect ratio after I downloaded the Xvid codec, which only took about 30 seconds. To download the Xvid codec for Windows, click HERE. Richard

Hi Dave, I checked up on the aspect ratio setting of my windows player & found I'd made a correction at some time & hadn't returned it to 1:1.
That meant that your latest 5tv clip played totally OK. ( undistorted )
But VLC player left on default aspect ratio was "thin". On being set at 16:9 the displayed video was normal.
The 2 vids of Hayley singing & giving her speech in Basra needed the same 16:9 correction with VLC player. They were both distorted with WMP set for 1:1 aspect ratio.
Watch this space.... Graeme

Hi Richard I downloaded the codec but the FiveNews video still won't play on WMP for me. I have version 11 - it shows the 'now playing' button illuminated and displays the title in the bottom left hand corner, but all I get is a black screen and silence! Best wishes Grant

But VLC player left on default aspect ratio was "thin". On being set at 16:9 the displayed video was normal. Hi Graeme, I tested the Five News video with VLC Media Player version 0.8.5 and it played correctly, first time and every time. However, I've just checked the VLC website and i see they are now recommending that we all update to VLC Media Player version 0.9.4 (and 0.9.5 when it's available). So I've installed that version instead and... the video played correctly first time and every time. It's also a pretty cool improvement over the old version! I was going to recommend VLC Media Player to anyone who is still having problems but I think we need to solve yours first, do you have the latest version? Also, as it is available for all major operating systems, can you please confirm exactly what your O/S is? I downloaded the codec but the FiveNews video still won't play on WMP for me. I have version 11 - it shows the 'now playing' button illuminated and displays the title in the bottom left hand corner, but all I get is a black screen and silence! Best wishes, Grant Hi Grant, While the DivX codec mentioned by Richard should work on most computers, it is only for Windows computers as far as I know but of course, you have Windows. In fact the exact codec is not DivX but is a related one Xvid, which I chose because it has versions available for the Mac and Linux as well as Windows. So to be sure, you should download and install Xvid from here.. Macintosh users will need to Google for "Xvid for Mac".Windows Users having problems with video or audio can download and install FFDShow from here (it's now known as ffdshow-tryouts) which includes almost any video or audio codec you can ever think of. I wouldn't be without it. I'd also hoped to be able to suggest VLC Media Player but I'll now wait for Graeme to reply first. Cheers, Dave
