Hi Dave/Paulo Having had to re-install everything following my computer problems, I find that the MPEG files I have don't now play perfectly with WMP11 - movement creates sawtooth edges. I have re-installed the K-Lite Codec Pack that Paulo recommended last time and which worked perfectly then. Not being familiar with this area of computing, I would welcome any advice/suggestions. Best wishes Grant

There are 3 versions: Basic, Standard and Full. www.free-codecs.com/K_lite_codec_pack_download.htmBest wishes, Paulo Correia

Hi Grant and Paulo,
Sawtooth edges on movement is usually caused in my experience by interlaced video recorded from TV so to stop it, I deinterlace the videos that I upload or link to in the forum. You shouldn't be seeing this problem on any HWI videos, but you might do on any videos of your own if recorded from TV.
Can you be more specific about which videos and which file types are affected?
Have you tried any other video players such as VLC Player, PowerDVD, DivX Player etc and are they affected in the same way? If they aren't, wmp is probably broken; if they are all affected, it's a codec or system issue. If only some videos of a certain type (or home-recorded) are affected, it could be the interlacing.
Good luck!
Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave and Paulo Thank you for your responses. There is a lot to take in and I will try to work out what you are telling me (I.e. try to understand ) as soon as I can as I am going to be in London for the next couple of days. I thought I had got my system back to how it was after the 're-install' but something is not quite right yet. Will get back to you. Best wishes Grant

Hi, I've been having trouble watching videos on the HWI site. I used to be able to, but lately the video box hasn't been appearing. If I had to guess, it started happening about the time HWI launched the new website? I could be wrong. I've tried Safari, Firefox and Google Chrome. Initially, Firefox and Chrome notified me I was missing a plug-in, so I followed the instructions in this thread and downloaded and installed the DivX and Xvid codecs for Mac ( here and here respectively, if anyone needs them) Now I do see the video box and the play controls, but it's white and doesn't play if I click the play button. Firefox and Chrome no longer say 'missing plug-in'. The YouTube videos are the only ones that play properly. This one is just a white space where the video box should be. No play controls. These links work for me, but they're skippy at some points. And um they're only audio right? Cos that's all I got. Can anyone help me out here? I use a Mac OS X version 10.5.8, if that matters. Thanks! cheers, Joanne

Hi Joanne, I'm sorry you are experiencing some difficulty in viewing some of the HWI videos. This one is just a white space where the video box should be. No play controls.
Perhaps Dave can shed some further light on this, but I believe you need Windows Media Player for the above video. It plays fine for me. These links work for me, but they're skippy at some points. And um they're only audio right? Cos that's all I got. Can anyone help me out here? I use a Mac OS X version 10.5.8, if that matters. I can't get the other two videos to work as well...I was never able to get x-vids to play. Sorry I can't be much help, but Dave is a video wizard ! Best wishes, Joe

Hi Joanne, All our videos on the old site (now archived) are in Windows Media format, so I suspect that most of the problems are something to do with your "Mac" ness. This is partly why we started to put our videos on YouTube as well (all of so far them in fact, on the new site). The direct downloads links posted in the forum are not really intended for clicking and playing, they are best downloaded to your PC and then played - though not everyone can, it appears. I'll give some thought to it later tonight when I have some time, and if I can suggest a way to help, I will. Cheers, Dave

Hi again Joanne, I can't really help you in detail to play the old HWI videos on a Mac as I am unfamiliar with it and cannot test it, but I know there are a few other Mac users in the forum so I hope if they read this, they can offer some advice. There is, however, Windows Media player for Mac, which may (or may not!) solve the problem - here it is: www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/windowsmediaplayerformacosx.htmlYou should be able to play any downloaded DivX or XVID videos by installing VLC Player for Mac, which is available to download from the official Videolan website here: www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html . As I mentioned before, they may not "click-play" correctly so download them first - the Windows version of VLC Player plays literally everything I can throw at it and I use it as my default player. I intend to extract some of the best early videos from the website when I have the time, and upload them to our youtube channel, which doesn't help you now but may well do so later this year when I've done some (more) of them. There are 49 so far. Good luck and please let us know how you get on. Dave

Hi Joe and Dave, Thanks so much for replying Hi Joanne, The direct downloads links posted in the forum are not really intended for clicking and playing, they are best downloaded to your PC and then played - though not everyone can, it appears. Cheers, Dave OHH. How do you do that though? I tried right-clicking and choosing "Download Linked File" but i just got something.html. I have VLC player that has worked with other videos so far. I just can't figure out how to download. Is it straight from the list in 'HWI Video Archive'? (That's what i tried) Is this also for downloading the videos? Or does installing it mean the 'click and play' way would work? Haha sorry, I'm quite an IT dummy apart from Word and Powerpoint! Thanks so much!! cheers, Joanne

Hi Bill, I mainly use Safari (that's a browser, right?) Version 4.0.5. I do have Google Chrome and Firefox though. I installed those because at one point in time YouTube wasn't working on Safari. It didn't work on those browsers either haha. YouTube worked on Safari after I cleared the youtube cookies; is it possible this problem I have with HWI videos is caused by cookies too? But Dave did mention that the HWI archive vids are meant for downloading rather than clicking and playing. Are you able to download videos from the archive with your Mac? I can't figure out how yet Thanks!! cheers, Joanne

I can't figure out how yet Thanks!! cheers, Joanne Hi Joanne, Sorry but I missed your previous post! HWI videos on the original HWI website (now at archive.hayley-westenra-international.com ) were always designed not to be downloadable and when I took over maintaining the (original) site, I just carried on that tradition. They all play in a box inside an HWI web page, so to view them, you may need to install Windows Media Player for Mac (though I've never tried it as I have a PC). Videos that I post here in the forum are designed to be downloaded - which in Firefox you do by a right-click and "Save Link As", like the new Classical BRITs video www.hwi.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Media&thread=5408&page=11#116694 that I recently posted. When you have saved it to your computer, that's when you may (or may not) need to have VLC Player for Mac OS.X to play it. Your browser security settings are another possible reason you can't play or see videos on the HWI website, they may block the embedded "ActiveX controls", which allow the embedded video player to work properly. I'd be interested to know if Bill (or any other Mac user) needs to use either of these methods to play the video from the two locations, and if it works. Cheers, Dave

Hi Joanne, If I right-click on the link I just download the html instead of the video too. The most straightforward approach would be to download a plugin for Firefox called Video Download Helper. It can be found at: www.downloadhelper.net/When you go to that page, there is a link in the second paragraph that says - "Install the Extension". Click that and follow the directions. When you restart Firefox you will notice three little balls to the right of the "home button" at the top of the browser page. If you are browsing a page containing a video clip, the three little balls will begin to rotate. For example, go to archive.hayley-westenra-international.com/video-vault/2006_wmv-player/20060305_prayer_sop.htmland you will see the spinning balls. Next to the spinning balls is a little down pointing triangle. If you click on that you will see the name of the video file (sometimes more than one will be listed). In this case it will show "20060305_prayer_sop". Move the cursor to this title and another menu will popup asking to "download", "quick download", "download and convert", etc. Just select the "download" and you will get a dialog box to choose the download location. You can also convert the video to other formats with the "download and convert" selection. You might want to try that after you get the download mastered. There is a way to do the same with Safari using the "activity window" but sometimes it is hard to figure out which of the many items in the activity list is the file you are trying to download. Let me know if that works for you. Bill

Hi Dave, The right-click method works well on the forum posted videos but not from the HWI website. Have I resolved something that I shouldn't have? Bill PS. I did have to download "flip4mac" to play the wmv videos with Firefox.

I did have to download "flip4mac" to play the wmv videos with Firefox. Hi Bill, The right-click method to download is only supposed to work with downloadable files posted in the forum, not on the website. Website videos are not supposed to be downloadable and they weren't when the site was first set up. However, times change... All new stuff that goes on the website itself is likely to be Youtubed or using the same video format as Youtube, I changed over from Windows Media last year. Downloadable files in the forum are likely to continue to DivX, which is very quick to encode at high quality on a quad core processor. Windows Media is sloooooow to encode and too limited in compatibility. Cheers, Dave
