Hi everyone
I doubt this person is famous enough to have his own sub - board, but the guitarist Stephen Yates has produced a solo guitar album entitled 'The Girl Who Touched The Sky'. This album is strongly inspired by Chinese music, and is just another way of showing the guitars' flexibility, and its ability to encompass all styles.
Its a lovely relaxing album, quite different from what you might expect, because it is recorded using steel strings, instead of the usual classical nylons. Yates is one of few who have composed a classical album using a steel strung guitar!
I was lucky enough to see him in concert, and it just blew me away!
I thought I'd share that with people - its something different!
Cheers
Ben

Hello Ben, You should create a thread about him. That's what we do with all artists that do not have their own sub-board.

Hello Ben, You should create a thread about him. That's what we do with all artists that do not have their own sub-board. Hi Nicola I would create a new thread, but I doubt that many would reply. The reason I mentioned it was because he is a highly diverse player - he plays and composes for the classical guitar , for which he won many awards, as well as playing and composing for the electric guitar. He has also composed music for string quartets, which I know is hard to do when you're not familiar with orchestral stringed instruments! To me, he compares with Hayley because he is encompassing different styles of music into his repertoire (Chinese and contemporary!), and Hayley encompasses Japanese songs, as well as pop and classical. (If only more musicians would 'stray away' from their comfort zones and perform music that is not in their own country's mainstream) I would also like to take this chance to mention 2 composers called Douglas Lilburn and David Farquhar. These 2 composers are from New Zealand, and have been identified as enriching New Zealand's own musical culture in the modern era. If anyone is interested, try listening to the album 'Prospero Dreaming' which is an album of classical guitar music, performed by the Kiwi guitarist Gunter Herbig. Cheers Ben

Hello Ben, I know only too well about no one replying. It happens to me all the time here! But it's not on topic here, and people are even less likely to read it if it's in the wrong place. You should start a thread, provide some links, and hope for the best, really. Even if you do a thread now, and no one responds, chances are they will a later date when someone else comes across the artist. x x I found his official website, by the way. It has zero information and I can't get his clips to play (ti uses real player?) Weird website!

Hi Nicola I took your advice and started a thread on Stephen Yates - how successful an idea it was remains to be seen! Basically, anyone wanting a change of relaxing music, away from the 'norm' should check it out! Cheers Ben

Edit: I've moved this post to BBC Proms 2009. This thread was not intended for general discussion, so I've now locked it. If you wish to discuss other music, please do so in another existing thread or start a new one as appropriate. Many thanks, Richard
