I've just had a look at the latest posts on Russell's forum. It appears the operation began about 1030 this morning and could take between 5 to 15 hours to complete.

Hopefully there will be some news at teatime.

According to Skynews, the three hour surgery went well. Russell is now awake, conscious and talking with his family by his side. It's a positive sign but he remains in intensive care and is still in a critical condition.

Hmmmm one brain op is more than enough, a second is very bad news. I hope this one went as well as they seem to be indicating and that he can make a(nother!) full recovery. Fingers crossed.

Watson surgery 'went well'

Opera star Russell Watson is recovering after undergoing what appears to be a successful operation to remove a re-growth of a brain tumour.

The 40-year-old singer had surgery lasting around three hours at the private Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, and was said to be conscious this evening.

In a brief statement issued by the hospital, executive director Michael Stroud said his condition remained critical.

He said however: “The surgery went very well. The tumour was benign, but it is too early to say how things will go. Post operative tests will now have to be carried out.”

He said the singer is recovering in the hospital’s intensive therapy unit, and members of his family have been with him.

Mr Stroud said the opera star, known to millions of fans as ‘the Voice’ was feeling “a little under the weather" following the emergency surgery.

He said: “He was clearly very nervous this morning because he was going in for a major operation.”

Mr Stroud said the singer had seen his children before going in to theatre.

The tumour, which has been removed, has been described as a pituitory adenoma - the same type as was removed a year ago.

The hospital said that the singer had been rushed into the Alexandra around 5.00pm yesterday evening, after suddenly becoming incapacitated with multiple symptoms, including a dramatic deterioration of vision while in the recording studio.

After an MRI scan had shown re-growth of a brain tumour and some bleeding, it was recommended he underwent emergency surgery.

In the statement, the hospital said Mr Watson’s management team and everyone at the Alexandra Hospital were focused on supporting the singer and his family at this difficult time, and were grateful to fans for the “warm of their best wishes for his speedy recovery“.

Thank goodness the tumor was benign and hopefully Russell will have a speedy recovery with no issues. Truly a wonderful voice.

This is devastating news. I thought Russell was finished with all those surgeries!! I will be praying earnestly that he will be able to make a full recovery once again.

They had a short clip on tonights TV One news in NZ (26th Oct) about the operation and showed him with Hayley when they sang together a few years ago. I do hope he has a full recovery and gets back to singing.

Hello everyone

On the evening news tonight, it was stated that Russell is off the critical list and may be out of intensive care within 48 hours. It also stated that full recovery could take a long time.

That was a very worrying few hours and, although his recovery still has a long way to go, I hope it will be the end of Russell's health problems.

Thank you for the positive information. What a relief! I hope that he will recover soon but I don't expect him to return on the stage before months. I was supposed to see him on November 28 for his gig and signing at HMV Manchester but I don't think it will happen...he needs to rest! Hopefully the release date of his album won't be delayed.

Brave Russell vows to carry on

AFTER being rushed into hospital last month to have a brain tumour re-growth removed, many feared for the Salford tenor’s life – never mind his career.

Yet, merely a few weeks on and the multi-million selling classical artist has issued a statement thanking his fans for all their support and vowed to release his new LP, Outside In, as a thank you to them.

Despite being advised by his record label to delay the release, the record will still hit the shops on November 26 – as Russell confirmed.

“There is absolutely no way that this record is to be delayed.

“After what I have just been through and with the near future in doubt it is unclear when and if there will be a good time to release the record.

“This has led to the decision that I would like the record to go ahead as planned.

“Although I won’t be actively promoting the record it is more for the fans who have waited long enough for this.”

With Russell due to undergo radiotherapy treatment in the near future, Watson has this message for his fans:

“To all my wonderful, caring and loyal fans, you have once again been there for me when it mattered.

“I don’t know where to start or if words can truly express the emotions I have felt in the last three weeks.

“Firstly I want to thank every single person who has sent get well wishes and gifts. This show of support and love, along with the love that I have received from my family and friends has really been the difference in helping me get through such a difficult time.

“There is still uncertainty ahead but with all your support I am sure it will make the journey ahead a little less fraught.”

His new long-player features a host of star names with legendary soul star Jocelyn Brown and classical star Hayley Westenra just two of the names appearing.

The record will be preceded by a single on November 19 entitled La Califfa.
