Hello Nicola! I agree that Renee Fleming sounds like a mezzo-soprano to me as well. As for Katherine Jenkins, she was certainly a mezzo-soprano when I saw her at the London Palladium last year, but now her voice sounds much lower in pitch and I would say she should be reclassified as a contralto. I think you can delete Ch... you know who from the list because she doesn't have a classifiable voice at all! Bye for now, Richard

I'm glad I am not going mad about Renee! Lol! I was worried I was deaf or something. Gerrit, thanks for the link, but until I catch up with the world and stop having 56k connection, I might be able to listen to the clips. You people should appreciate your broad band! Lol.
I wouldn't go as far as contralto for Katherine. I think she is a mezzo, not a mezzo soprano, but I am no expert - I'll leave it to them lol.
I didn't know Alto singers existed, can anyone name any? Apparently, they are dull versions of sopranos.

yes there are Alto singers they are contralto. but alto is short for it.
And I can name some singers that are that but they are to many that I can name and I do not what to broad anyone.
I like the deep voices and I also like the high ones.

A mezzo is just short for mezzo soprano it is the same thing and alto is short for contralto.

Contraltos don't make as much money as sopranos because its generally thought that they can't do the vocal gymnastics. Not true, but the public isn't the most highly educated regarding vocal categories.
Sopranos are divided into many categories too. And since Hayley isn't a classical singer, I'll simply say she has a high voice.

Hello everybody! There is a difference between an alto and a contralto. A contralto is normally a solo voice and is always female. An alto is normally a voice in a choir with the same pitch and range as a contralto, but the singer can be male or female! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifThe programme for the "Horses in Harmony" concert at Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre listed the singers in the North London Chorus by vocal category. It did not mention any contraltos, but all the altos were female. Personally I can't name any male altos, but they certainly do exist. Bye for now, Richard

My understanding of the alto is the same as Kimberly's; that it is the same as a counter tenor - the highest adult male singing voice. Alto (or contralto) is the lowest female singing voice. However, the range is the same. All of which is basically what Richard said.
Yes Stephanie, Andreas Scholl is the only one I can name too, but there is (was) one in the King Singers.
Just for the record, I cannot stand the sound of the counter tenor. Sorry if there are any amongst us!
Roger

When used as a harmony in a group of singers, such as the King Singers, they can work very well by adding a new dimension to the sound. They are not something that can stand alone, though. They remind me too much of Tiny Tim - and that was way too close to a castrato for me. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifKeith.
