I have only picked up on this festival as I usually look at the schedule on the main HWI site and must have missed the postings on the forum, silly me! I have missed out on advance tickets as they closed on 23/12/06 and will not be available again until 7/5/07, still it's unreserved seating so there's still a chance. I thought going to Wisley was a logistical nightmare. I have done some research and you can get an advance single rail ticket from London (Kings Cross) to Skipton for £13.50. There are plenty of hotels, B&B's in Skipton, which is about 7? miles from Grassington. Perhaps Postscript could advise about transport back to Skipton. Does The Festival run transport back to Skipton as the concert will finish about 10pm or later.

I am assuming their web site might give more details. There may or may not be special buses laid on or possibly they may run an extra late service for the duration of the Festival. Skipton is an interesting thought and 7 miles shouldn't be that expensive in a taxi. Grassington itself is tiny and has limited B&B facilities. Its main call to fame is being a centre for walkers with their own camping equipment! I have every intention of providing pics etc and some background info and am unquestionably recommending to people that they plan a week to enjoy the countryside around. Centres like Harrogate and less so Ripon are ideal for car drivers with plenty of hotels and it is out of school holiday season so accommodation should be easily available BUT.the Christmas experience was way over-popular and I am glad I had Hayley as part of the trip. I would otherwise have been disappointed with my weekend away. In summer, of course, we will have Hayley and if the weather is fine (without being too hot) it is wonderful countryside. I was going to address this issue once I'd got the initial Christmas postings up. Peter S.

Hi!
For those who would be interested in learning a little more of Grassington from first-hand experience, I have started posting some photos on the Christmas Presence, Harrogate thread. After I have fnished those, I'll relink here with some more details relating to the summer event

Hi all!. Following on from my posting of pics of the Dickensian Festival at Grassington, I'll now address my thoughts for the summer festival. First, staying over. Skipton I did not drop in on, so I can only say: - If you can pre-book accommodation (other than a B&B at Grassington) Skipton would seem easiest for public transport users..
- Dales transport supposedly provides pdf time-tables but i could not find relevant information other than the 72/72R or 800 seems the bus link you want. www.skiptonproperty.co.uk/transport.asp#Buses link provides a dispiriting paragraph on bus availability but says 'taxis are just waiting to be used'!
- Check out taxis
- Try, possibly by 'phone, the Dales Tourist Board.www.daelnet.co.uk
For car drivers (sorry, my instinctive orientation on this one), Skipton again seems a possibility. Harrogate is just over a half-an-hour's drive on mostly a good A road but provides a wider range of meal/hotel options. You want to consider at least a weekend away if not a week. The countryside is superb and there is much easily reachable by car to save relocating. York is an hour or so from Harrogate. In the region you have: - Fountains Abbey--a world heritage site--and requires a good half-day to really appreciate
- Bolton Abbey
- Ripon with its lovely cathedral sitting on top of the hill, pictures follow.
- Settle--Carlisle railway crossing the Ribble viaduct a superb construction across a lovely valley with many pretty towns around.
- I took a circular trip, I'll describe later, taking in Ripon and arriving at Grassington BUT watch your timing especially if you major on the country lanes and make sure you have a full tank of fuel.
Keeping it simply to the main purpose and this is burdensome for the foot/public transport user, THIS IS TREACHEROUS COUNTRY! If it is wet at the immediate surrounds of the site it will be exceedingly muddy. The weather can turn inclement suddenly and if it does this is not country in which to be caught unprepared. Having said that, it is beautiful countryside. I took a circular trip on the Saturday, taking in Summer Bridge and Pateley Bridge leading cross-country to Fountains, where I merely looked at the site and realised I wanted time I didn't have. Then Ripon, where I stayed for an hour or so but could have been longer, then along the A6018 off which you can take any country lane you want, dependent upon your timing, or taking the slightly faster but longer route as far as the B6160. If you were to do this on the day of the concert, you need to watch your timing very carefully and ensure you leave Ripon with a full tank of petrol. Also make sure you have a large-scale road map and preferably a companion to save con tinually stopping to check which track you should follow! That, I think, is all I can usefully say that complements what ever you find on the web without undue repetition. www.daelnet.co.uk/gallery/ further illustrates the beauty of the countryside while the two pics below show the magnificence of Ripon cathedral. We had been advised that the date of this event would be changed. I can now confirm it is Friday 29th June. I have modified the opening post in this thread so the date will appear correctly on all posts from now on.

Hi Roger
Is this definately right? We already have our tickets for the 29th June. The Grassington web site still advertises the show for the 29th June. If so, I presume there will be some contact with us from the festival organisers because many tickets were sold before Christmas for the original date, .
Regards,
George

For those of you who are going (or intend to go), here is an article from NEWSDESK today's issue. According to the Festival's official site, only the last few tickets remain after advance booking period.
Hi Folks
I have one spare ticket for this event on Friday. £22 unreserved seating in the Marquee. If anyone is interested at such short notice let me know and I will meet you at the entrance before the show. That's assuming we can hire a boat to get the rest of us through Sheffield!
