Poised, talented and only 18 years old, international singing sensation Hayley Westenra will perform at the Curtis M. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at 7:30 p.m.
In 2002, a then-15-year-old Hayley Westenra burst onto the worldwide music scene with the release of her international debut album, Pure. Her angelic, crystal-clear voice propelled her to the top of the classical charts; Pure went 10x platinum in her native New Zealand, making Westenra the best-selling artist in the country's history; double platinum in the United Kingdom; platinum in Australia and gold in Hong Kong and Singapore. The album also made a significant impact on each country's pop charts, sealing Westenra's status as what the U.K.'s Hello! magazine called "the next big thing" in classical crossover.
Westenra's mentor, New Zealand opera diva Dame Malvina Major, explains her appeal. "[Hayley's] voice is absolutely musically true," she says. "A lot of young singers have beautiful voices but they have to be guided into that sort of clarity. She has it naturally."
The last few years have been marked by a flurry of media attention and appearances for the young singer. Westenra performed for Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister Tony Blair and President George W. Bush at a private concert at the United States ambassador's residence in London, with Bryn Terfel and José Carreras at the Faenol Festival in Wales, and alongside Luciano Pavarotti in Edinburgh at the Royal Variety Show. She headlined a tour of New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the U.K., recorded the end-title song on Disney's Mulan II, guest-starred on NBC's American Dreams and won two Japan Gold Disc Awards for "Song of the Year" for her startling version of Amazing Grace and "Album of the Year" for Pure.
Westenra's latest album, Odyssey, reflects her growth from a teenage prodigy into a mature vocalist. She embraces a wide range of musical styles, including classical, hymns, folk and pop, and her voice retains its ethereal quality but is richer and more rounded than on Pure. The album includes a stunning cover of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now, a duet with Andrea Bocelli on Dell'Amore Non Si Sa, and May it Be, which was recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and was originally performed by Enya for Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
Westenra recently opened for another popular crossover artist, Il Divo, on its United States tour, and will join the group again in Europe later this month. In between, she will perform a handful of solo dates in the U.S. and Canada, including her appearance at the Phillips Center.
Regards,
Andrew
