It would be interesting to know which style of guitar playing she is learning - Classical, Folk, Rock? The thought of Hayley accompanying herself on stage rather appeals to me. I love Hayley's solo songs, whether a capella singing or Sonny!

I can't somehow picture Hayley thrashing out a tune on some garish electric monstrosity "Nightwish" style. Best wishes Grant

Despite the wording of the opening paragraph in that article, I think we know that Hayley can already play the guitar to some extent. It goes on to say that she wishes to take lessons but that, I am sure, is to increase her ability and technique and not to learn from scratch. Over two years ago, Hayley appeared in an episode of American Dreams singing 'Who Painted the Moon Black' and (apparently) accompanying herself on guitar. I accept it may not have been her that we could hear, but she certainly demonstrated some knowledge of the instrument in the chord shapes she was playing. Don't believe me? Take a look HERE. This video was captured and uploaded by Gerrit to HWI.net in October 2005. Roger

If Hayley likes to increase her ability in playing the guitar I hope we see her someday accompanying herself again like in that video that Gerrit posted. She does it so great on the piano with the song "Sonny". I'm sure she can do it with another song on the guitar as well someday. Thomas

That's what I get for not checking the forum more often. The next time I go to a Hayley concert, I'll be in the front row with a guitar and a sign that will read "FREE guitar lessons - Hayley, will you give them to me"?

I love Hayley's solo songs, whether a capella singing or Sonny! Martin I had a nightmare two nights ago. No, really...it was indeed, a bad one. There was Hayley on the stage with her new rock-metal band. There were screaming band members, crunching, distorted guitar blasts, amplifiers 3 stories high, guitar smashing everywhere.... and otherwise, all around quiet, soothing classical music. I woke up in a cold sweat thinking... Hayley, DON'T YOU DARE!!! Then last night, I had another Hayley dream. This time, I walked into a local Irish pub just a few blocks from where I live and guess who was performing alone on stage. Yes, HAYLEY! She was sitting prettily on one of those high bar stools....just her and her guitar....smartly dressed in fashion jeans and a gorgeous top. And guess who her background singer was. Yes, Sophie. When Hayley saw me walk in, she accidentally dropped the guitar. It happens all of the time. The guitar cracked it two. Well in my dream, I saved the night. I just happened to have my Martin D-35 with me, so handed it to Hayley. Sophie attempted to pull it away from her big sister, but Hayley would have none of that! Anyway, Hayley and Sophie continued on with the performance, which was beyond description. I was truly Hayley-wow-wow-wowed. So was everyone else in the bar....including President Bush and Queen Elizabeth, who just happened to show up in the pub. After the show was over, Hayley returned my instrument and gave me a hug. It was the same hug that all of you HWI people have been getting at the concerts and that I've been missing out on! However, I insisted that she keep the guitar in exchange for five free lessons. I can't wait for my first one. Does anyone know how to get to Hayley's new home in England? i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

It would be interesting to know which style of guitar playing she is learning - Classical, Folk, Rock? The thought of Hayley accompanying herself on stage rather appeals to me. I think that to develop skills on an instrument, you shouldn't limit yourself to one style, especially in the early days, and many great guitarists combine fairly disparate styles. If I had to pick one "style" I would hazard a guess at folk/country as this is the sort of music in which an acoustic guitar and chord progressions are probably more commonly used. Remember Hayley said she wants to learn to play so she can use the guitar as a compositional tool, so I wouldn't be expecting her to learn virtuoso rock or jazz techniques, or complex classical pieces that she couldn't then sing over! Approaching songwriting with a guitar can yield very different results to using a piano, so it will be interesting to see the results. I agree, it would be great to see Hayley accompany herself on guitar one day, maybe on "Who Painted The Moon Black" or "Both Sides Now". Despite the wording of the opening paragraph in that article, I think we know that Hayley can already play the guitar to some extent. It goes on to say that she wishes to take lessons but that, I am sure, is to increase her ability and technique and not to learn from scratch. she certainly demonstrated some knowledge of the instrument in the chord shapes she was playing. Thanks for posting the link again Roger - that was the first time I had seen it and I enjoyed watching it (twice straight through!) I agree she definitely demonstrated some chord knowledge. I also think that with her strong level of music knowledge and experience of playing other instruments, progress on the guitar should be fairly quick (i.e. once you play one instrument, the next is easier to learn - a bit like languages.) No matter how good you are at an instrument you can always learn more from various teachers. I applaud the fact that Hayley is planning to develop her music skills and continue to learn so as to push her career onwards, and it shows how seriously she takes her music. That's far better than resting on her laurels and claiming to know everything like many some artists do. Good luck Hayley - maybe Isaac can teach you a thing or two? Best Wishes, James

From the close up it was clear that Hayley was playing something, although we cannot be certain that that is what we were hearing. I also thought, though, that Hayley could already play, maybe not to the standard she feels she requires to use it properly. Another string to her bow can't be at all bad. Best wishes Grant
