Just heard the UK entry on the Graham Norton show, real catchy tune and lyrics, could easily be a winner.
Estonia sounds interesting too
and Saara Aalto is to represent Finland
and one for Paulo, the Portuguese entry

Enjoy it for me Comet. I was rather hoping after we voted out in the referendum 2 years ago the UK would be spared this annual humiliation at the hands of European viewers but it seems not. The fact that the UK song is a 200/1 outsider gives you some idea of the esteem in which our singers are held on the continent. I remember a few years ago I tried to avoid an evening of Eurovision by visiting my mother in her nursing home. Imagine my disappointment as I entered the lounge only to find all the residents seated around the TV eagerly watching Graham Norton in a bowler hat waving a Union Jack ! As the first song began the cat ran out of the open patio doors and disappeared into the garden, never to be seen again for the entire evening. Clearly a discerning animal ! I'll leave you with the song that is apparently or amazingly hot favourite to win. I never did work out how Israel came to be in Europe, let alone Australia. Whatever. Enjoy (or not). That's "null points" from me and the cat. I shall be enjoying the BBC Young Musician 2018 Final instead. In 2016 Jess Gillam became the first saxophonist to make the final. I know which competition I prefer !!

Oh heck! SuRie's performance was interrupted by a stage invader! Someone rushed the stage and took the mic right fom her hand! Luckily security was able to apprehend the protester. The UK singer was able to finish her song.

Yes all credit to her for getting through it but the security was shocking, especially as it seems this guy has done the same thing at other venues. www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/eurovision-stage-invasion-wasnt-first-12526288They'll have to be a lot tighter with security next year in Jerusalem. When this contest first started in the old black and white days of Cliff Richard and Lulu it was about the best song and to be fair it was a good show back then. Now it is about pushing the best agenda as the winner Israel did with #metoo. But if you politicize the event as they have then you make it a target for nutters like the one who invaded the stage during the UK performance. I watched a film instead and only tuned in for the last few minutes of the results, just in time to see the winner with the UK public was a tender ballad sung by a man and wife from Lithuania.

Yes Surie's performance was, shall we say, "interesting". She declined an offer to perform again at the end. Unfortunately, it didn't help her finishing position much, she was well down the field at the end.
To be honest, I wasn't too impressed with any of the songs this year, certainly not any of the favourites, but there was that amazing Estonian entry that made it to 8th. position - their opera singer with "La Forza" must have sung some of the highest notes ever heard at Eurovision! Not your typical Eurovision song but she definitely had the best voice on the night. That would have had my vote, if I ever voted in this contest.

Dave Just a comment on the voting, for the first time ever I voted, in the primary round and in the final for Elina Nechhayeva from Estonia (and we thought Westenra was difficult to spell and pronounce). You can't vote for your own country if you are currently in it. You can get your friends in other countries to vote for your country. So I wonder who and why do people phone vote ? The additional marks given to Israel for the phone vote was a massive number, was this a well organised win on a commercial or political basis ? (I would like to see the the statistics behind the phone voting, countries of origin, numbers of votes from the same phone etc, ) Does it sound as if I am suspicious ? probably.

Yes Comet I share your suspicions. Israel wins Eurovision 2 days before Trump moves his embassy to Jerusalem all of which coincides with the 70th anniversary of the creation of the state of Israel (or the dispossession of Palestinian lands depending on how you look at it). Of course it's impossible to discuss anything about Israel without getting political which is beyond the remit of this forum, so I won't ! Maybe I'll start a thread about the music at the Royal Wedding. Now there's an uncontroversial topic.........ahem..........
