As good singers get cast aside on the latest series of BGT I thought we needed a thread about singers who were eliminated from talent shows and shouldn't have been ! One of the biggest blunders on The Voice was probably made in 2013 with Bronwen Lewis, a young Welsh singer. I have the definitive version of this beautiful song in my CD collection by the late, great Eva Cassidy but Bronwen sings a verse in her mother tongue which adds to the poignancy. The judges look blankly at each other. Tom Jones can't pick her as his team is full (he always filled his teams too quickly) but Will.I.am's excuse seems particularly lame.

2013 was a bad year for BGT too as Alex Keirl was eliminated at the semi-final stage despite having a beautiful voice, like a choirboy. Now I have to declare an interest here. I've loved this song since I first heard it aged 14 and it's being played at my funeral although which version remains to be seen. Years ago I asked Hayley to record it (she hasn't) but Lucy Kay promised me she'd put the Italian version on her next album at the end of this year. Alex does let fly in the final verse (as most singers do nowadays) although the singer who first made it famous, Roberta Flack, never did. Cowell says there's something missing. The only thing I can see missing is the second verse !!

The first time ever I saw your face and Killing me softly were among my first 7 inch singles and they remained among my favourites for playing in the slow sets at weddings and parties for the best part of two decades.
Interestingly Roberta Flack's first single was a Leonard Cohen Song : Hey That's no way to say goodbye. I never managed to get a copy of that one, so that's the one that got away for me.

Thanks Richard, Such wonderfully descriptive lyrics: LEONARD COHEN LYRICS "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye"
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm, your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm, yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new, in city and in forest they smiled like me and you, but now it's come to distances and both of us must try, your eyes are soft with sorrow, Hey, that's no way to say goodbye. I'm not looking for another as I wander in my time, walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme you know my love goes with you as your love stays with me, it's just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea, but let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie, your eyes are soft with sorrow, Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm, your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm, yes many loved before us, I know that we are not new, in city and in forest they smiled like me and you, but let's not talk of love or chains and things we can't untie, your eyes are soft with sorrow, Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.

Well Comet I'm afraid you've got another disappointment coming as a very good school choir from Ireland was eliminated from BGT 2016 last night. They finished 4th, one place from qualifying for the the "Wildcard" vote.

I never like choirs on talent shows. In fact, they irritate me a bit. They're always shocked when they don't make it, but I never am. I am very good at predicting who will make it and who won't, and I'm nearly always right. Well, for one thing, on AGT, the big prize is a show in Las Vegas, and a choir is not really Vegas-worthy. And the AGT audience has become extremely fed up with singers winning the show. However, a singer has not won the show since 2011! And nobody remembers ANY of the singers who did win! Well, I do remember them, but you never hear about them again!
