It says G1 129 on my Saturday ticket, but there is no G number on my Sunday one which is in the Balcony.

Music lovers set for seasonal treat

Cork City Hall will turn into a classical winter wonderland this weekend as New Zealand soprano Hayley Westenra teams up with Cork Youth Orchestra for a special Christmas concert.

The 120-piece orchestra, which comprises young people from the age of 14 to 19, will also provide the backing music for a screening of classic Christmas short film, The Snowman.

Conductor Tomás McCarthy said the concerts are not to be missed.

“Ticket sales are going really well. There are only a few tickets left for the Saturday performance though there are still some available for Sunday,” he said.

Mr McCarthy said the inclusion of guest star Hayley Westenra will be a special treat for audiences.

“She’s a classical pop crossover artist with an amazing range of material —not just pop and classical but West End, Broadway, Chinese, Japanese… she’s done it all really.”

Some of the songs Hayley will perform on the night include ‘Dream a Little Dream of Me’, ‘Summer Fly’ and ‘Peace Will Come’.

The New Zealander signed her first international recording contract with Universal Records at the age of 14.

Her first release under the deal, Pure (2003), then became the fastest-selling international debut album in the history of the UK classical charts.

Fast forward 11 years and Hayley has now sold over 4m albums worldwide.

“Over the years I’ve learned more and more about music and my interpretation of the music is different,” she said.

“I suppose I’m digging deeper and deeper in myself and putting more out there, rather than just singing a song.

“It’s no longer singing without any life experience.”

In her spare time, Hayley also does a lot of work for charity. In 2005 she became one of the youngest Unicef ambassadors.

The concert will take place tomorrow and Sunday in Cork City Hall. Tickets are €30 and are available from Pro Musica or online via www.ticketmaster.ie
