Royal lullaby a 'huge honour'

HONOURED: Hayley Westenra has sung for Prince George.

Christchurch songbird Hayley Westenra says she was honoured to be chosen to sing a lullaby for the royal baby.

During her whirlwind visit to her home town, Westenra told The Press, from her parents' home last night, it was a "huge honour" to sing for a "special baby".

Westenra, who was in New Zealand when Prince George was born, had not yet heard from Prince William and Kate Middleton but said she was "not actually expecting to be summoned to the nursery".

The tune, Sleep On, features on Westenra's new album, Hushabye.

The 26-year-old star, who jets out of Christchurch for China on Monday, said it was "always good coming home".

"Christchurch will always be home. I just feel this need to come back.

"I've been in Christchurch for about 10 days, it's been wonderful just to touch base, see the family and hang out . . . I'm lucky in that I get the opportunity to come back quite frequently," she said.

"[But] for me because I'm only coming back every now and then, it's still a bit of a shock going in and seeing the centre of Christchurch."

As for her wedding plans, after French beau Arnaud Sabard popped the question in January last year, Westenra said "we're working on it".

"Getting everyone in the same place at the same time, it's quite a mission. With his family being in France, my family in New Zealand and a lot of my friends in the UK. A friend suggested we have it in Singapore, it's halfway," she laughed.

Westenra will perform at the Beijing Great Wall Forest Festival next Saturday.
