Everybody should have one! I must admit, I don't know too many pieces, and I really need to hear more, but I find it difficult to think I could enjoy any piece of classical music more than Dvorak's Cello Concerto in b minor. I've never heard such an outstanding piece of music before, and I can't fathom how someone could compose it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQIiFI_MiuY&feature=youtube_gdata_playerSo what are yours? I need to listen to more anyway -Rory

My favourite is Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.

Hard question for me! I really enjoy all the 'popular' pieces.
My favorite classical piece, after due consideration, would be Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D Major.
A 'contemporary' classical piece would be the 'Star Wars' theme from John Williams.

I too enjoy many popular and contemporary pieces (love all the Star Wars music!). I'd say Bach's "Prelude" is an example of a popular piece that I love. I also really enjoy classical pieces composed for video games and some anime - I feel these can lose some respect just because of what they're associated with, but the music is spectacular. I particularly enjoy many pieces used in the Legend of Zelda video game series. Here's one of the medleys of some of their finest melodies: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wawKNRJphF8&feature=youtube_gdata_player-Rory

I would find it hard to chose just one piece too. I have lots of favourites, usually the popular ones though rather than the more obscure. I guess the popular ones are popular for a reason. Ones that come to mind off the top of my head are
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 2 - My favourite concerto for piano and orchestra
Berlioz Symphonie Fantastiique - So many groundbreaking ideas and instrumental effects, the birth of the Romantic period (Berlioz leaned heavily on Beetover, then added a new dimension).
Tchaikovsky Symphony no 4 - Perhaps the most passionate symphony there is.

Hello everyone
Like Martin, there are many classical pieces I 'like' but there are two particular ones that will always be absolute favourites.
Smetana's "Moldau" from "Ma Vlast" was a favourite of my parents and was really the only classical piece I could ever identify as a youngster. Today it has a special place in my heart and I always think back to those days when I hear it or play it.
My other favourite is Albinoni's "Adagio in G minor" which I first heard in Brussels' rain soaked Grand Place during a new year break about 15 years ago. Luckily, the person I was with recognised the piece and I bought the CD the moment I got back to the UK.
Cheers Grant

Actually I like the Grieg piano concerto too, which I heard played brilliantly last saturday at Leicester's De Montfort Hall. The rest of the programme was Sibelius, another composer I like.
