Video - Hayley singing for the All Blacks

Hi everyone,

There are several threads about Rugby around here but generally, they are all related to a specific match. In order to avoid off-topic, I created this thread essentially to put a video I had never seen before : Hayley singing in France for the All Blacks. I had seen many videos of Hayley singing the anthem before matches against Wales or England - but never in my country ! It was last November in Paris, Saint-Denis (Stade de France). The sound is incredible - her voice echoes in the Stadium and it's simply MAGNIFICENT.

If you watch carefully, you'll see that my French fellows are starting to applaude at the end of the first Maori verse, they thought the anthem was over but then Hayley started singing again. Yet, everyone was very respectful until the end of the song. You can imagine what a delight it was for me to watch her standing there, in the middle of the field where our beloved French football team won the Football World Cup in 1998!! In something of a beauty and the beast moment, New Zealand's world acclaimed teen aged singer Hayley Westenra took the spotlight at a rugby test this morning, quite magnificently singing "God Defend New Zealand" before a match played between New Zealand's world acclaimed All Blacks and the French Les Blues at the Stade de France, Paris. Her pure, angelic voice is really something to behold, even if not a New Zealander blinded by teary national pride, and a from-heaven-to-hell counterpoint to the 80 minutes of brutality interspersed with touches of sublime skill that followed it definitely was.

For the record, New Zealand won the game 23-11, and soulful singing was the winner on the day.

By the way it's an mp4-file. You need QuickTime or iTunes for that.

Absolutely, my apologies - I didn't check the first link.
I edited it, the direct link to download the video is here : Hayley in Paris.

As Thomas said, you need Quicktime or Itunes to play the MP4.
It can also be played with Media Player Classic.
But it's worthwhile

Hi everyone,

This morning, I wanted to purchase tickets for the Rugby World Cup to attend a NZ match but I was told at the ticketing store that there is nothing left for the All Blacks (and in the meantime Hayley). Too bad because I was willing to do the trip to Lyon or Marseilles. Unfortunately the All Blacks won't play in Paris either (unless they reach the quarter finals, of course - but I will already be in Manchester by then!). No luck, I was too slow to buy the tickets.
Anyway, to get back on topic, I hope someone will be able to record each Hayley performance at the World Cup!!

PS : Next Saturday, there is a rugby test match between France & New Zealand in Auckland. No Hayley, so I can freely & loudly say "GO FRANCE !" (off-topic! )

It's unfortunate that there is not a single image of Hayley during the video. But her voice echoes in the stadium and it is absolutely glorious.

Hi Stephany... all is not quite what it seems! That video is of the match played at Twickenham almost a year earlier, on 19 Nov 2005! The proof is here in this very board... with a link to a much longer video including the English National Anthem. There is also photographic evidence that Hayley was actually there - but they are distant shots and you cannot actually recognize her face. This was the All Black's greatest test, a most exciting match... and England were beaten by only four points!

I do have a video of the match on 5 Nov 2006, kindly provided by two members of Katherine's official forum, but there is a video/audio glitch near the start and being the perfectionist that (unfortunately) I am I didn't upload it. But I may do so in due course...
